The human body will always have glucose available when it needs it regardless of carbohydrate intake..since carbohydrates are the only non essential macro nutrient..humans instead use gluconeogenesis . We only require around 4 to 5 gms at any given time. Our brains run perfectly fine on ketone bodies. The body prefers ketones over glucose...many believe that the human body prefers glucose..WRONG...it tries to rid itself of glucose very quickly and goes to great lengths to use it up first..that is the reason why its " preferred" the same goes for Alcohol...it will be used up instead of glucose because it has more energy per gram than glucose but is TOXIC. So it will be "preferred even more so" In summary preferential treatment by the human body is NOT due to because it actually likes these forms of energy...it wants to rid itself quickly of these chemicals.
During the third trimester of pregnancy and at birth, both mom and foetus are naturally in a state of mild ketosis. Within the first few days after birth, babies adapt to using their fat stores as their primary fuel-source, and begin to produce more ketones.
Ketones are the ideal source of energy for all humans. Glucose is required by only a few processes in the human body and it can beautifully manufacture what it needs.
