Hi! I enjoyed Chef Jana’s recipes and tried them, it was a blast to add a new no-waste item to my repertoire 🤗 I already make pesto out of radish and carrots tops, salads out of beetroot leaves, I save onion & garlic peels and bottoms to make broth, I sauté cauliflower leaves and stems, I slice thinly broccoli stems to add to salads and soups, I make cheese out of okara (the leftover pulp from making soy milk) and cookies out of oat milk okara… and my favorite is watermelon rinds : I make noodles, jam, pickles (tsukemono), kimchi, grilled steaks out of it, so versatile and so plentiful ! There is always very little food in my kitchen bin 😂
Thank you. Your videos snapped me out off lethargic eating. I quit most of the processed vegan foods and I'm eating simple since cooking while struggling with depression is hard for me. I boil a potato and sautée asparagus, or mushrooms and that's dinner, or make lentil soup with just and onion in 30 min, or an eggplant with a red pepper and some chickpeas from a can. I feel sooo much better. Thank you
I keep scraps from my veggies and store them in the freezer and make broth out of it once my container fills up. I use the broth to cook grains or make soup. I love it and will do this forever.
@@flow4458 that has actually happened to me once or twice before. I THINK because there would be a LOT of onion peels in it so I scaled it back just a bit.
@@flow4458 I think I saw this tip from a video of Japanese chef making kombu dashi stock and vegetable stock, but do NOT boil it/bring it to a boil. Treat it like you would tea (which is basically what you're making, veggie scrap tea). Just as you don't add freshly boiled water to tea but rather allow it to cool for 5 min first (to keep the tea from becoming too bitter). Don't boil the stock or bring it to a boil. Keep it on medium/medium low and allow it to only come to a simmer. The lower heat should leech out less of the bitter compounds from the veggies while still making a flavorful stock. You could also try to "cold brew" the vegetable stock, as is done with kombu dashi, but I've never tried that for veg stock.
Just tried this! I'm not big on spicy so I used a little bit of chili flakes/red pepper..and I didn't have any oranges on hand so I used dried orange peel (spice) & little bit of grape juice & date syrup for extra sweetness. Also added some smoked paprika for some extra flavor. I was scared to try this cuz my banana peels been in the fridge for a minute.. and I was like man, idk if this can be good let alone using banana peels that have oxidized a Lot in the fridge. Lol they look black, but taste soo good! The soy sauce deff helps a LOT with the flavor.
I've seen the banana peel recipe videos in the past but I've never watched any until now. Actually, I'm only watching because you're doing it and I trust you. So, thank you for trying this and thank you for your honesty.
A great, not food related way to use up banana peels is to put them into water, leave them for a couple of days and they make a great plant fertilizer!
I accidentally turned on the TV yesterday when I saw a guy making pulled pork out of banana peels and I was like "dude, I'm not even gonna consider that before Sweet Potato Soul shows me how to do that" and only a couple hours later this happens😂😂.
You've successfully reminded me to improve. So, going forward- I will watch more carefully every part of what I'm discarding, and try to find a tasty way to incorporate every(possible) part of fruits and vegetables in my meal planning and preparation. Thank You!
Awesome 👏🏽 I will definitely try this recipe! I do know that green cooked bananas 🍌 the peels taste like green beans and the actual banana taste like mashed potatoes. And I was thinking the same, adding lentils for the meat balls.
Thanks for trying it for me I was really skeptical when I saw on Chef Jana but watching you prepare and give suggestions to help bulk up and add further nutrition an added bonus❤❤❤
Love this idea for reducing waste. I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who is skeptical about eating the peels though! I can’t wait to try the carnitas!
I have lots or Persian friends and they introduced me to radish greens many years ago. They make such delicious salads. They remind me of watercress that we used pick down the road in the spring by our house, but radish greens are less peppery and choose the non-fuzzy greens. We also used to pick poke weed and boil it 7+ times to remove the poison…but it was so worth changing the water out and spending practically all day cooking it. (Back to the radish greens LOL) My favorite way to eat radish greens is with edible flowers, kumquats halved (you eat the entire fruit) and balsamic dressing and of course , paper thin sliced radishes (soaked first to get extra crunchy). Another food I adore that is so misunderstood is dandelion greens. The trick is to tear them; NOT CUT. When you tear them, the phloem tubes (like veins) allow the butter to easily drain when boiling. Boil for 3-5 minutes (depending on variety), drain, taste to see if the bitter is gone. If not, replace the water and boil 3 more minutes. I add them to melted butter, a smidge of cracked pepper pepper and a light dust of salt if unsalted butter is used. They are delicious!!! You will just think you’re eating greens. You can add some bacon grease, bacon crumbles and a dash of Tabasco sauce if you wish.
I honestly wasn't going to watch this video but I HAD to see how you were going to make them. I'm glad you did this bc I've always been skeptical of eating banana peels
Favorite veggie scraps: Beet greens (they're sooo good just like Swiss chard), kale and broccoli stems (slice thin for broc stem and stir-fry until tender), and the woody bottom parts of the asparagus stem (they make a flavorful veggie stock).
I like to make mandarin peel tea. Put your Mandarin peels in the food processor and make into fine pulp and dry on parchment paper on a cookie sheet for a few days take the dried mandarin peels place in a Tea tin. Steep in boiling water with honey for a wonderful tea. You can also slice the mandarin peels and caramelize them with sugar and use for baking in cookies and cakes .🥰
I like your idea of adding lentils to the "meatballs" or mushrooms to the "carnitas". I thought about trying to make banana peel "bacon" but wasn't sure about how to remove the inner white part of the banana. Now that you showed me how I may give it a go!
Never would have guessed banana peels were actually edible. I'm like you now, sooo many banana peels wasted over the years! Also, my favorite food scraps are collard and kale stems. Upcycle that inner banana scraping by putting it in a jar with water for a day or two and make banana-water. It's super-food for your house plants or some garden plants!
(Also, just a tip, you should wash your banana before you peel it. Just saying'!)
You can also Sprout the banana stems and grow your own banana trees
You are such a nice soft spoken recipes. So many good cooks.
Can you freeze banana peel if you wash it first.
Thank you from Saskatoon sask Canada
Hmm, I haven't tried that, but I think you could. Let me know if you try it!
I’ve seen that many do. I freeze my bananas just before they get too ripe, right in the peel. I defrost them a bit to remove the peel. The peel gets all frosty like a lemon ice (from the stand), so I’m sure it’d be fun to work with
I would add the bananas to my regular meatball recipe. Any way to add banana peel to the diet. Banana peel & cinnamon tea!
In Dr. Mandel's video,. He says rubbing t he e white side of the banana peel on your face is great
Why? What is the benefit, I meant to ask.
who makes that pan? the blue one that you're using?
Le Creuset 😄 It's the braiser.
@@SweetPotatoSoul thank you! i was in the email webinar that you were in right after you made this video =). so i wanted to watch it - ha ha - and then loved your pan =)
I make banana peel burgers... They're delicious and all kind of dishes with them. :)
Could you use aquafaba instead of flax seed?
save all the veggie scraps (onion peels, asparagus bottoms, mushrooms stalks, chopped ends, etc) in the freezer to make veg stock later. bones and shellfish peels for the same if you do eat meat. beet, turnip, carrot tops in soups, sautés, stews, omelettes, pestos.
Woooooooooow that was awesome!!
Wondering how to store them if I eat the bananas and not ready to use the peel
