I often jokingly ask new people I meet through sim racing "so what instrument do you play then?" because it's amazing how much of a crossover there is between the two interests. Perhaps whatever it is that appeals to us in deconstructing how a song works is also the same part of our brain that takes great satisfaction in nailing the perfect lap.

@@pardolagames8994 Yeah I also play bass, the basslines in GT's soundtrack, especially the older installments, just didn't have the right to go as hard as they did lmao
From what I've understood, part of the reason why Gran Turismo's OST is filled with jazz is due to the fact it being a Japanese game series. Jazz and motorsports seem to go hand in hand in Japan anyway; for example T-Square made an intro song for Fuji TV's Formula 1 broadcasts back in the 90s (incidentally, the band's current drummer Satoshi Bandoh has composed some of the songs for Gran Turismo, like you showed in the video).
Was just about to comment about that! Many jazz fusion bands from the 80s and onwards have done records inspired by racing and car in general or even hired specially by brands, like this one, for Nissan: th-cam.com/video/K0EAqszw9iQ/w-d-xo.html
That's the thing about GT: it isn't just about racing, it's about car culture, it's about class and style, and the soundtrack has always been absolutely a part of that.
So about the first song, a possible reason they included it in the game is that it was popularized in France after being used in an ad for Citroën (which, for those who don't know, is a French car company) several years ago. So popularized in fact that I was surprised to hear the American accent of the singer, because I never heard the original adaptation of the poem

The Gran Turismo series represents the true essence of motorsport, the sportsmanship, the coolness of it. All of the ridge racer soundtrack is pretty good. Also agreed on the gentleman's game remark. It's a racing sim yes but it's also a car collecting game which caters to that type of audience. That's why it has the sophisticated photo mode, old world city circuits, etc.

Honestly, Gran Turismo's Blue Line was the song that really made me interested in jazz. I have to thank keiji matsumoto for creating such an amazing piece.
FINALLY SOME GRAN TURISMO MUSIC! Thank you for bringing this up Charles😭 Playing GT5 as a kid (but already in the previous chapters) I think really shaped in an unconscious way the music I hear and play now! It introduced me to jazz, funk, fusion music as well to some japanese artists, and having spent entire afternoons playing it, I can confirm the level is insanely good on some tracks! Having played the GT saga from 8 y.o, really made me appreciate this music used on videogames! A few of my favourite tracks present in GT5 (but also in GT4 I think, even though I've never really played it): YUDAI SATOH: - Rain and Lady's Heart - Current of the times - Strolling - Jolly Bounce - Are you ready - Night Birds (This. Tune. Absolutely brilliant. Every time I'd buy a new car, this tune was in the background and I would see this Audi TT spin on the screen just to hear the soprano solo. I CAN'T-😭) - Gently the moon always watches you - The power of GT ( 6/4 divided in 5/8 + 6/8 + 6/8 + 7/8! Imagine what impact this has had on a 10y.o :) SATOSHI BANDO - When the rains come - Farewell - Dark Line (Anyway, sorry for the english, I was too excited while writing this❤)
Oh my god. Night birds. It's like one of my favorites too! I legit know the solo by heart I like a lot of tracks from Satoshi Bandoh, like Smooth Talking, Farewell, Afterglow, Dark Line
I grew up to love Jazz and Bossanova and lounge music because of the menu music in the GT games, I grew up playing Gran Turismo 5. The game has such a special place in my heart. I'm glad they kept that same feel in GT sport.
I loooove how genuine your love for music is, it's intoxicating! I would love for you to react to some more prog instumentalists, like Plini (Cascade, Kind, Papelillo), would be really interesting to hear your dissection of his music!

I’ve said this a couple times now, but if you’re interested in video game soundtracks that bop, then Ace Combat has to be on the table. So many good tracks, from Daredevil (AC7), The Liberation of Gracemeria (AC5), Zero (AC0), Mimic: Rage and Scream (AC7), Megalith (AC4). You’re sure to have a blast and be beyond impressed
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one car guy and musician lol. I played Gran Turismo 1 back in the day with my dad and when I bought Gran Turismo 5 I was blown away by the jazz/lounge playlist. Such cool tracks
Gran Turismo has an absolutely incredible soundtrack, i grew up playing it and even at a young age i was blown away by the ost. Gran Turismo 2’s Blue Line has got to be one of my all time favorite tracks from the series. The saxophone playing speaks for itself, but that paired with the piano and strings and the eventual choir that comes in just makes it a masterpiece and simultaneously questionable racing music.
I'd love a whole new channel to just listen to motorsport theory sim gameplay and racecraft. If it's anything like your music explanation videos it'll be gold.
I loved the music on Sport and now GT7 (some has been kept). Have you played around December when they change the play list to jazzy Christmas classics?
YESS! Finally someones recognizing the beauty of movie and game soundtracks, thank you so much! Look at the God of War st as well, I love the main theme, theres just so much hidden meaning in there, even though its strictly instrumental ( ;D )

YES FINALLY A MUSIC COMMENTARY VIDEO ABOUT GRAN TURISMO!! I love this series so much Edit: Some of my favorite tracks from the series comes from the opening movies of 4 and 6, and the various menu music from 4. For example GT Mode 2, Power and Speed, and Arcade Mode from GT4 are some of my favorite original songs from the franchise
Thought I'd jump in here as someone that has basically played Gran Turismo's since birth, the music in this series has 100% shaped what I listen to today through exposure to musician's such as Feeder and Isamu Ohira. One thing I've always noted about the series is how much they care about the soundtrack of the game just as much as the content. A couple random/interesting facts about the game's licensed side of things (the original 4 had a dedicated original and licensed score). In the American version of GT3, there is a song by Snoop Dogg called "Dogg's Turismo 3" where he raps about the game itself and he says lines such as "Oh lord I jumped in a dark blue Ford", and the intro movie to GT5 "5OUL ON D!SPLAY" was actually apart of a contest where user's got to name the song between it's first appearance in the E3 trailer, and the full game's release later that year. The winner's name is listed somewhere in the game's credits.
Gran Turismo OST always has been memorable and a banger my fav is the entire GT5 music, from lounge-music to jazz to bossa nova such an amazing soundtrack
2010, young me woke up the day after Christmas and played Gran Turismo 5 on my Playstation 3, which were gifted to myself and my brother. I still remember the feeling I had listening to the Christmas Jazz music. What a time that was. I miss those days.
I've listened to that song at least 1000 times. Love it. There have been variations to "From the East" on later GT games (including with vocals), but the original version in GT2 is still my favorite.
I’ve spent so many hours not only racing but making scapes and liveries in this game and I LOVE the soundtrack it fits most of what you do in this game, it definitely can also just keep you calm before a race or hype you up. Absolutely brilliant
How is Jet Grind Radio, Everyone's Gone to Rapture, DKC2, TES, and the Witcher 3 all not talked about for having exceptional compositions? Charles would especially like soundtrack to Sonic Mania.

I’ve had every GT, and the menu music has always been exceptional. Search for GT Sport’s Christmas music though, great arrangements!
Oh, and GT4’s ‘Moon over the Castle’ is more along the lines of what you would expect from a racing game!
A few of my favourite tracks present in GT5 (but also in GT4 I think, even though I've never really played it):
YUDAI SATOH:
- Rain and Lady's Heart
- Current of the times
- Strolling
- Jolly Bounce
- Are you ready
- Night Birds (This. Tune. Absolutely brilliant. Every time I'd buy a new car, this tune was in the background and I would see this Audi TT spin on the screen just to hear the soprano solo. I CAN'T-😭)
- Gently the moon always watches you
- The power of GT ( 6/4 divided in 5/8 + 6/8 + 6/8 + 7/8! Imagine what impact this has had on a 10y.o :)
SATOSHI BANDO
- When the rains come
- Farewell
- Dark Line
(Anyway, sorry for the english, I was too excited while writing this❤)
i couldnt believe it when the notification popped up
the Gran Turismo series has genuinely changed my life
@@toyotagaz Same, man, same😌
Oh my god. Night birds. It's like one of my favorites too! I legit know the solo by heart
I like a lot of tracks from Satoshi Bandoh, like Smooth Talking, Farewell, Afterglow, Dark Line
I loved your improv over "Con mi Sombra", that was fantastic! So much fun for my ears 👂 ❤
I grew up to love Jazz and Bossanova and lounge music because of the menu music in the GT games, I grew up playing Gran Turismo 5. The game has such a special place in my heart. I'm glad they kept that same feel in GT sport.
If you want more of the wonderful musicianship (and humour!) of Pink Martini I highly recommend their album "Hang on Little Tomato" 🍅
I loooove how genuine your love for music is, it's intoxicating!
I would love for you to react to some more prog instumentalists, like Plini (Cascade, Kind, Papelillo), would be really interesting to hear your dissection of his music!
I just got blown away when I first played GT 5 and it just throws you into the third movement of the Prokofiev Piano Sonata nº7 while also showing you the beautiful process of building an engine
Video Game OST’s go underrated though they have amazing re-playability and are catchy as well :/ Adds to the atmosphere of the games as well
You might like to check out The Consouls - they play VGM as jazz
1:59 dude, wtf! such a call-back to the flash game "flight" that i use to love so much!
Driving and flying in VR is a true game changer it’s so addictive.
Yep, I'm addicted to Assetto Corsa and VTOL VR 😅
Just got myself a Quest 2, looking for a good enough PC now. Hyped
@@samkwant4050 Be warned, the Quest 2 is a gateway drug. You will get addicted and you will be craving for more. 😀 Happy simming.
@@JanStrojil looking forward to getting the best out of it, currently still limited to playing GTR2 and RBR on my low-end laptop (+TMX wheel), which is already great
Gran Turismo 5 also has beautiful jazz music (I’m sure others do too, but that one I remember most)
Gran Turismo 3 introduced me to Lenny Kravitz when I was a kid, and was incidentally the coolest intro sequence of all time. Go watch it! The menu music also helped to foster my love of jazz at the time.
literally same
OMG! Gran turismo has been the biggest introduction to jazz Fusion music for me 😭I’m stocked you did this video!🔥🔥😍
I agree. Ace Combat series has some amazing soundtracks.
Glad someone is saying it, absolutely love those games soundtracks
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one car guy and musician lol. I played Gran Turismo 1 back in the day with my dad and when I bought Gran Turismo 5 I was blown away by the jazz/lounge playlist. Such cool tracks
Pink Martini's Sympathique is one of my all-time favorites. Also the lyrics are hilarious.
This video totally got me hooked on S-Tone from the second song. The rest of the album that song is from is a masterpiece
You gotta check out the old games! GT4 was insane musicwise! It even had the famous meme “Oh Yeah“ when you finished a map
Look at the God of War st as well, I love the main theme, theres just so much hidden meaning in there, even though its strictly instrumental ( ;D )
looks like you would enjoy Charles' previous videos :D
The GT4 Intro sequence (US version) is the best Gran Turismo opening. Literal chills hearing Panama - Van Halen kick in.
Change my mind
The editing and music were just so well done with that intro movie. It made me feel excited to be racing.
More than half of this video is just Charles playing the piano and having a great time. As a car guy and a musician this makes my soul happy. Great to hear that Charles loves cars too 🤣💙
Love that this video was just playing solos over the game tracks.
You might like to check out The Consouls too - they do VGM as jazz
My wife really got me into Pink Martini. We've seen them 3 times, and it's a great show every time. This is their signature song...
I appreciate that with all the tear-down videos out there, you focus on the positive.
The absolute best soundtrack for a racing game ever
YEAHHH FINALLY! MY REQUEST CAME THROUGH!
All Gran Turismo games have had killer scores! Glad to see you cover this unexpected thing haha 🙌🏼
I just bought this game for my father, he's a huge Gran Turismo fan and also a piano player, he'll be in for a treat!
YES FINALLY A MUSIC COMMENTARY VIDEO ABOUT GRAN TURISMO!! I love this series so much
Edit: Some of my favorite tracks from the series comes from the opening movies of 4 and 6, and the various menu music from 4. For example GT Mode 2, Power and Speed, and Arcade Mode from GT4 are some of my favorite original songs from the franchise
That jazz fusion stuff, it makes video games feel distinctly Japanese. That and the sound effects they use for the starting klaxons.
Gran Turismo OST always has been memorable and a banger
my fav is the entire GT5 music, from lounge-music to jazz to bossa nova such an amazing soundtrack
2010, young me woke up the day after Christmas and played Gran Turismo 5 on my Playstation 3, which were gifted to myself and my brother. I still remember the feeling I had listening to the Christmas Jazz music. What a time that was. I miss those days.
Loving the Sunday sunset vibes for literally every song
fellow music nerd AND sim racer here. down for a race if you are haha!
You know it's good when he fully commits to following it
My love of music is colliding with my love of racing. What a world.
bro Blue Line from Keiji is a literal godsend.
Like the wind is one of the best in the whole series imo utter classic.
GT always had this laid back jazzy vibe that i could recall
I'll just be bumping to the East City theme in GT 2 any day
I've listened to that song at least 1000 times. Love it. There have been variations to "From the East" on later GT games (including with vocals), but the original version in GT2 is still my favorite.
From GT3 and GT4, check out the track "LIGHT VELOCITY", CRAZY GOOD!!
The Gran Turismo games have such a classy vibe!
IM SO GLAD YOU TOUCHED ON HOW AMAZING GT'S SOUNDTRACK IS
When its holiday season, you should do a video about Michael Bubles christmas music
The “win” lick from GT3…. Amazing
My car guy senses are tingling 😃
More of this, please!!
Please do another video and highlight the Jazz!! GT4, 5, and 6 are amazing
You should try dirt rally 2.0. The is very uninteresting, but the racing is incredible
Charles would especially like soundtrack to Sonic Mania.
jazz and racing are such a underrated combo. both go hard and bring out all the brain power !
You should cover each title of Gran Turismo so many opportunities of different genres to cover
I can watch you play/soloing for hours Charles!
You might enjoy VGM jazz by The Consouls too eg. th-cam.com/video/qEoBMvJLrsU/w-d-xo.html
I don't normally play racing games but this music is DOPE! Please check out Journey's soundtrack by Austin Wintory - Grammy nominated, it's beautiful!
(sorry my previous comment seems to have disappeared!)
I second this, his work on ABZU is also phenomenal. The guy just knows how to add so many layers of depth with his arrangements to put you in the environment of the game
@@jeshaiahbretz4320 Completely agree. When I'm playing ABZU I sometimes just stop and stare at the screen with my headphones on, absorbing the beauty in front of me and reaching a state a tranquility
@@DoctorAzmain BIG SAME
And his work on Tooth and Tail is great too! That one always goes forgotten but it's amazing.
@@jeshaiahbretz4320 Delphinus delphis might be one of my favorite pieces of music of all time. Just phenomenal.
You started this with my favorite track from this game. I've waited so long for you to do that very song because of GT Sport. I've always loved it when it pops up in the main menu music. Such a beautiful song.
My favorite is Gran Turismo - Moon Over The Castle
Many versions, but both versions from GT2 and GT4 are very VERY nice.
But honestly, ANYTHING fron Gran Turosmo 2 OSTis amazing!!!
This was a composition by Masahiro Andoh for a solo album of his. It was then included in a T-Square album under the name "Knight's Song".
@@MordecaiXLII I know, mate, I just wanted to stay on "Gran Turismo" topic and not wander out to every individual person. :) I've heard all versions from first time it appeared in GT, to orchestral version, to live, all of those were *chef's kiss*
One of the best parts about spending hours in menus painting liveries and tuning and such... you are sonically blanketed in joy. Love the game... this seems like a channel for me. Cheers
I just love the newer Gran Turismo games jazy-ish vibe...
It started way back in Gran Turismo 2. Just take a look at the menu music for that game
It’s almost like a throw back to the 1950’s or 1960’s Monaco GP race. Lots of very fashionable drivers, celebrities, and others, soaking up the mediterranean air and watching cars go super fast.
GT SPort is definitely my favourite. GT7 has some solid jazzy menu tracks but most are just remixes of classical pieces, which are cool, but not entirely my cup of tea.
the intro of gran tourismo, the video with the liebestraum nr.3 playing made me fall in love with piano again. I started learning the piece and it had an actual influence on me
Charles, you should check out the Persona 5 soundtrack. I think you’d love it
You might enjoy The Consouls - they do VGM as jazz and have done some great Persona covers
@@cooldebt Thanks I'll check it out
Dude! I came her for your typical music breakdown video that I love so much and got treated to an almost 3 minute improv over a really good backing track. Thanks!!
"GT Sport is the 7th game."
About that... if we're speaking main entries only, then sure. But if we're looking at everything else, nope.
Okay you may be the perfect cross-over of two things I love, music and sim racing
I'll take a dangerous step between all these lovely Gran turismo fans and recommend you listen to the soundtrack of Forza Motorsport 4. its soo different from all the other motorsport games but it fits SOOOO perfectly with the style. i will never understand why they didnt stick with that genre.
The Stig always listened to weird and surprising things on the car radio while doing his fast lap round the Top Gear racetrack.
