Holding the sword properly makes it far more difficult to control and this is where repetition comes into play.

It's like every time there's a new game with swords comes out you get a huge wave of people asking.
Personally I showed up after ghost of tsushima 3 years ago but I since stopped playing video games for almost two years
Until elden ring came out and I saw the samurai class

I was always taught when you hold the sword your hands should be relaxed to the point that it is almost falling out of your hands. And is how do it to this day many hand blisters from practice lol 😂

Preciate your knowledge. I've no training in kendo, a manual or teachings but i am in a new country(where I can't speak well), i have a wooden stick, open space where I live , and two days out the week from work where I just stay home as in a cave. Am a big feudal Japan fan. I'll mainly be pulling from what I've seen or come to understand and hope to build a little skill. Wanted to be sure of handle basics before I take it serious.

A wooden stick and grand, open space sounds like a great dojo. Best of luck!!

Proper and grounded… long ago I studied a great book by James Lowry about this matter… the principle and proportion of such - remains the same. Obviously the exotica of the Orient or the East it’s very alluring … and Bushido - Bujutsu well… it’s cool
and … very popular now- more than ever. And tricks and speed are entertaining and so on. But- be humble… this is really about real combat it comes from that… for that was the way of life not about been cool. This teacher nailed it on that point about appearing incorrect- and I see that a lot even in Japan. Obviously today we don’t have the state of mind they had… because we don’t have to be on the battlefield at sunrise or defend a castle at dawn. But do respect them and such heritage by doing the correct thing from the get go… the effort of such and such humility within. Bujutsu is not a movie… it’s the spirit of war and peace dressed in discipline… and spoken with honor.

I'm curious I have cerebral palsy and can only use my left hand and walk with a limp. I have 7 katanas including a reverse blade can you still hold a katana effectively with one hand

Certainly. Yes. One hand technique was taught in many sword schools. The fictional character Zatoichi used one-handed swordfights in his dozens of movies. Seven swords are a great collection. Keep training and/or trying the best that your body can do with what you have. Hold the swords a lot. Swing them hundreds of times in your hand and develop the muscles-memory. You can do it. Best of luck and health to you.

I agree with most of what you say, but the thumb should be pushing forward. Middle finger and thumbs should grip tightly like you just finished snapping your fingers.

But not to tight. Not tense but ready. Not thinking yet not dreaming. Ready and present for whatever may come.

Shows where "sword experts" don't know how to handle them- cough, cough, "Walking Dead", cough, cough...
