      I learned that from a neighbor, many years ago, who told me she is from Spain. I said “oh you speak Spanish”. She said no she speaks Castilian, the official language. She then said there are 3 other languages that are spoken in different areas and none of them are Spanish. I remember Catalan and Basque but can’t remember the third.

    Those distortions on maps are due to the Mercator projection. It's an attempt to represent a 3d object (the Earth) on a 2d surface.

    • @haraldisdead
      @haraldisdead 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Every projection is an attempt to represent the globe on a flat surface. There are three attributes to any map, size, shape, direction. No map can accurately portray more than 2. 1 always has to be sacrificed. Mercator sacrifices size, because it derives from nautical maps, for which shape, and ESPECIALLY direction, are paramount

    He's wrong about English not being the "most widely spoken language". It is. There are more native speakers of Mandarin, true, but the vast majority of them reside in China. That's not the definition of "most widely spoken".

    10:40 the problem here and with Greenland earlier is the map projection. There’s no way to make a flat map of the globe without some distortion in shape, area, the direction, or distances. The projector most commonly used is the Mercator projector which preserves the shape of landmasses at the price of area as you go north or south

    The Statue of Liberty is on Liberty Island, which is in the state of New York, even though it's surrounded on all sides by New Jersey waters.
    When the borders were fixed in 1834, Liberty Island was one of a number of exclaves that resulted. Ellis Island, where most immigrants from Europe arrived, was another. New Jersey successfully sued New York in the late nineties, arguing that only the parts of Ellis Island that were above water in 1834 were in New York, and everything created artificially since is in New Jersey. So now Ellis Island is split between both states. And it ended up being such a nightmare from an administrative perspective that New Jersey hasn't tried the same thing with Liberty Island.
    So currently the entirety of Liberty Island is in New York, up to the water's edge.

    The Nile river is a full 100+ miles longer than the Amazon, idk where he's getting his facts. In terms of volume of water though, the Amazon is by FAR the largest river. Like...it's not even close.
    And English IS the most widely spoken language. There's a difference between "native language" and being able to speak a language. There's hundreds of millions of people who speak English despite it not being their native tongue.

      Do you need a full passport or just the passport card? We only need the passport card where I am - but it's a small border crossing. Can't use it for any other country though. Before 9/11 we didn't need anything but a US driver's license - same with Mexico and Jamaica and I don't know how many other countries. There is the "fact" (I don't know how accurate it is) that gets repeated that only some small percentage of American's have a passport, but before 9/11 travel was much less restrictive.

    The question of in what state is the Statue of Liberty located is surprisingly complex. Its island has been owned by the federal government since 1801. Geographically, the island sits in the New Jersey side of New York Harbor. Politically is where it gets confusing. If Wikipedia is correct, New York has control of some administrative functions, such as collecting sales tax at the Statue gift shop and "serving process" for litigation. This means that Liberty Island is an exclave of the state of New York, according to a 1908 Supreme Court case. In the 1980s, New Jersey sued to change this. Wikipedia says the case was not heard by the Supreme Court, leaving the 1908 decision in place. Because of this confusion, when it was a question on a citizenship test the acceptable answers were "New York Harbor," "Liberty Island," "New Jersey," "New York," "New York City," and "on the Hudson."
    It seems to me that the "longest river in the U.S." should be defined as the entire length of the Missouri River plus the portion of the Mississippi River downstream of their confluence at St. Louis.
    Liberia was "sort of" a colony of the United States in the early 1800s. It has been independent since 1847.
    According to how the term "Middle East" was defined decades ago, Afghanistan and Pakistan might have been considered part of it. "Near East" was used for Turkiye, Lebanon, Israel, and the other Asian Arab countries that comprised the Ottoman Empire. I don't know about Iran/Persia. The "Far East" was what we now call East Asia.

    The reason most people don't know the true size of Greenland is due to the Mercator projection used to create flat maps as early as the 16th century. The cylindrical projection kept the features needed for navigation though it loses size accuracy the further an area is from the equator.
