When you do the churn test and you start the pump by dropping pressure through the sensing line, that is automatic start if the pump is on a 10 min. Timmer it will automatically shut off..so you should always time it..if no automatic shut off then you have to manually press the stop button. And it should be noted on the controller or pump inspection tag as to whether it has a 10 minute run timer...remember if you manually start pump via the start switch you have to manually stop..the auto stop usually only works when you automatically start. Also while the pump is running you should check the packing and bearing to ensure they are not getting hot..Ethier by touch or use a infrared heat gun

In NYC, fire pumps can ONLY be stopped by manually

When doing a churn test it is advisable that there are certified oil filled gauges on the sensing lines for both the jockey and fire pumps. These are a better read when dropping pressure than the reading in the controller. Depending also by the AHJ or insurance company some locations what you to close the valve on the discharge side when doing the test because catastrophic failure can happen. The jockey pump on the wall should not be part of a bid anymore because its the cheapest thing that you can install. It was hard to tell inn the video but I never saw a casing relief valve as you showed an air relief. Lastly some pump runs are just a supervisory/trouble. It is always been recommended to tie it in as an alarm. As an example the security guard silenced the trouble on the panel from a smoke detector being out. The pump started inn the pump house on a Friday night and there was smoke coming out of the pump house on a Monday morning. This is why an alarm is suggested.

In this video, which valve would you close to prevent catastrophic failure during a churn test? I know NFPA 25 requires it but company policy is to close it before conducting test for liability reasons.

No. You cannot do drain tests or whatever during the churn test.
It’s in the name. Churn test.
That pump needs to churn for 10 minutes. Again…churn.
The casing relief valve is being exercised during the churn as well.

Question: What about the pressure on the field? After the test should we open a drain valve to reduce pressure? Thank you!

By the NFPA 20, the system pressure needs to be maintained close to the main fire pump churn discharge pressure to minimize pressure surges in the pipeline. So, you should not reduce the system pressure after the test. I hope it helps you!

Is it normal for water to leak through the suction side of the pump(This is close to the impeller).

if that is on the packing gland, yes its normal

Shut off the main discharge valve so as not to pressurize the whole fire system while performing your test

Look like the casing relief valve you are showing look like more like a Air vent? I can be wrong, never mind the main relief valve is under the Air vent

hi there, judging from the video, it looks like there's only a single pumpset for this fire protection service? do you guys practice the 1 duty 1 standby pumpset philosophy or is that not a requirement in NFPA?
