- The 96th Academy Awards got off to a rocky start thanks to host Jimmy Kimmel's monologue. As the show began, Kimmel made the usual jokes, but a major low point happened early when Kimmel started discussing this year's nominees and honed in on Robert Downey Jr.

Anyone having anything less than respect for what RDJ has recovered from and being graceful about it is nucking futs. His recovery was 20 years ago, and he continues to prove to everyone that addiction and low points in your life do not have to define you.

It’s so incredibly rare for an addict/alcoholic to get sober and stay sober for the longevity of RDJ. It looked incredibly ignorant/classless on Kimmel’s part.

As a recovering addict and clean for over 7 years, I did not find the joke funny at all. Downey Has moved on with that part of his life and should be celebrated for his amazing performance.

Even offense aside it wasn’t even funny. I think there were ways he could’ve potentially made an edgy joke about it. Kimmel’s delivery made it worse imo. It was basically just an insult. I think with better delivery, that first part could’ve been a kinda funny dark quip. Letting it linger and then ripping the subtlety out of it with the “drug motion” had no humor in it whatsoever.
He didn't need to do that to Robert. My stars, Jim, practice Frozen theory, LET IT GO, let it go

Addiction is a SERIOUS AND DEADLY DISEASE. To make light of that fact just shows why it's such a problem in our country. We don't take it seriously and act like people can control it with willpower. As though we'd treat ANY other disease that way.

There’s a right and wrong way to make that kind of joke and Jimmy definitely does not know how to do it right he just goes straight for offensive. He doesn’t even make jokes but the end of the day he’s a huge hypocrite that used to have the show, called the man show and then came out Against sexism and all that stuff and has done many other things in his career which he eventually came out against other people doing it, but he was OK when he did it.
