I remember as a young boy getting up early to visit my school chapel. Something about the tabernacle and the candles… the peace of that place gave me a peace that comforted me amidst the struggles of family life. Fast forward 45 years after a deep spiritual quest to really just appreciate that same connection with myself through the divine and it seems that simplicity is key. I know that God is all things and in me. Is one with me. Letting go of devotion is entirely unnecessary. Letting go of my imagined self is also unnecessary. Finding the truth which appears to be the acceptance of both, the unity of both. That is what currently consumes me. That is completely ok. That is the path I have chosen for now. These teachings and those of Meister Eckhart are lighting powerful flames that are beginning to dissolve the paradoxical nature of seeking. Thank you for sharing your research and insights. 🙏

Well, there's Zikhr in Sufism, which is pretty much self remembering, and G speaks of dervishes himself, while also mentioning the root of the way is indeed dating to ancient Christianity in Egypt. How his teaching are steered towards one while it seems it was his wish to be all encompassing? Also as far as I know, Bennet was the great proponent of Sufism in the way, he went through the entire middle east for many years learning from Sufis, how is it that you're mentioning him as an authority on G's mental state but overlook his "steering"?
Certainly Gurdjieff included Sufi influences and movements in his teachings. But the heart of his inner work process is best described by Maurice Nicoll, and this was a direction that Bennett did not go in. He happened to be around Gurdjieff at several stages, particularly the last years, but then went on to explore his own interests.
A beautiful and discerning presentation -- thank you. I wonder if perhaps Gurdjieff's "sad eyes" were not due in some small part to his practice for the benefit of others of the specific recommendation contained in the "concluding chord" from Beelzebub's Tales -- to continually sense the inevitability of our own death as well as that of everyone upon whom our eyes or attention rests. (This also aligns with a talk he gave about breathing, "On Air".) Having only recently begun to adopt this practice, it will be of little consequence to me if my eyes become sad -- so long as the effect expected by Beelzebub is realised as well!
