A Spectacular Slip from Flying Scotsman on her 100th Birthday - 24.02.2023

  • Exactly 100 years after her first day in service, 60103 Flying Scotsman passed through Carlisle on her return from Edinburgh to the East Lancashire Railway at Bury.
    Although running with nothing but her support coach, she gave us a spectacular departure - one to remember!
    It was a gloriously sunny day - too sunny for easy outdoor filming - and we had another visitor in the morning, Inter-City's Scottish Push-Pull Tour with 47 712 Lady Diana Spencer as motive power.
    The two visitors livened up an otherwise quiet day at the Citadel.

      I grew up in Darlington which was home territory for the Gresley A3s and A4s. Violent slips were the norm for departing trains in the 1950s when I was a young spotter. It isn't just the Gresley machines - Oliver Bullied's Southern Railway Pacifics are, if anything, even worse, as the present-day Carlisle spotters will confirm.

    Been through Carlisle station quite a few times as a little boy (1950’s) going up to Edinburg and on over the magnificent Forth cantilever rail bridge into Fifeshire to visit grandmother.
    Threw pennies from the train while crossing the bridge for good luck.

    Well done, Tim. "Haggis", as we unruly convict descendants downunder in the colonies refer to "Flying Scotsman", was the one loco that hid from me during my big trip to the United Kingdom back in 2018. I enjoyed a pleasant Sunday afternoon in Carlisle during my trip and your coverage of Friday last brought back some fine memories. The ScotRail livery push pull set was a pleasant surprise to me. I wasn't aware of this set until viewing your coverage. Thanks again for this video.🙂

    Very interesting content Tim, thank you. I'm intrigued, having lived in Carlisle for ten years, '69-79', I took a keen interest in the station and visited as often as my parents would allow me yet I had no idea that there were three stations at one time?

    • @schoolshorts

      Have a look at this old Ordnance Survey map of Carlisle
      maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16.3&lat=54.88843&lon=-2.93153&layers=6&b=1
      It doesn't show the other passenger stations but just look at the number of different goods stations belonging to the different railway companies (Carlisle was served by seven different companies before the grouping of 1923).

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At least at ground level virtually all of the original station still exists and is in use - unlike so many of our once great stations which are now a shadow of their original selves. Also, there are plans to extend the station on the west (or Platform 1) side - quite ambitious plans - so the future is looking good for the Citadel.

    Looks like I missed an interesting day - double headed 56s on the logs as well as the push pull excursion and Scotsman returning to Bury. By the way there was a fourth station at Canal!

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  ปีที่แล้ว

      You did indeed Les - and there were others which I missed. An interesting-looking engineer's train ran through the station just as I was buying a coffee from John's barrow. Whilst I was sat drinking it an Avanti Voyager arrived from the Sou'-Western - driver training, presumably.
      I must do some detailed research into Carlisle's stations. I have an old O.S. map on-screen in front of me just now - it shows goods stations galore but Citadel is the only passenger station shown. The map is from the 1888-1913 series but doesn't have a publication date - presumably the other stations had gone by the time it was produced. Something for me to do in the coming weeks when there are few trains to film!

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do agree with you on the smoke deflectors. Gresley designed beautiful engines but they had their weaknesses and the corrections added years after his death (double chimneys, German smoke deflectors) may have solved or alleviated problems but did nothing for the appearance of his classic machines.
      However - she still draws the crowds!

    Interesting video. I don't know how the driver managed to spin the wheels like that virtually light engine, having a bad day perhaps.
    He also seemed to over do the preheating of the cylinders for a loco that was already in service.
