Behind the Scenes at "One Day at a Time" 3-16-79

  • Shot by crew member Brett Babcock, this tape was provided by camera operator Bob Erbeck. It's a backstage look at the taping of the last episode of season four from "One Day at a Time", which was recorded live at Metromedia Square on Stage 1 in Hollywood on March 16, 1979. In this are cast members Bonnie Franklin, Mackenzie Philips, Pat Harrington, and Valerie Bertinelli; executive producer Jack Elinson (and it was his last day on the series), producers Dick Bensfield and Perry Grant, camera operators Bob Erbeck and Vito Giambalvo, director Alan Rafkin, associate director Selig "Pinky" Frank, as well as other staff and crew members. A really fascinating look at how a Norman Lear sitcom was produced in the 1970s. Metromedia Square has since been leveled and a high school now stands in its place. Thanks again to Bob Erbeck for this video!

What an incredible find this video is -- a look behind the glitz at the best sitcom of its time! I identified so much with One Day At A Time, because our family was so much like the Anne Romano family. And we were in the real Indiana, no less! Our Mom was ahead of her time in divorcing and becoming independent and I always felt close to Bonnie Franklin's character, and Barbara and Julie!

Pat won the Emmy in 1984 for supporting actor in a comedy. John Ritter won that year for Best lead actor.
That said - I always believed Pat was the series lead actor not supporting? Bonnie was lead actress (obviously) but to me Pat was lead actor as he was the only male lead to be on the show for the entire series run.
