This worked perfectly for me, thank you!!!!!! One thing to note is (at least in my case) you can add the "ei.cfg" file to the windows USB you already have that won't let you pick the version, you don't have to make the USB again using the media creation tool
I never saw this issue but with older computers perhaps because there is no "preset" activation key in the bios. I think manufacturers for Windows 8 built in a key.

You disconnect the computer from the internet, put in the DEFAULT Windows 10 Pro key (VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T). Let it run, it will give an error, then restart computer and it will come back on running 10 Pro un-activated. Then you can use your OEM key to activate it without issue. Have done this 10+ times with success.

Once I had done that, it gave the error, restarted my laptop, said it was updating and then came back on running Windows 10 Pro. All I had to do then was change my Win10 Pro key to the one that I had purchased and it came back as saying I was now activated. It saved me a lot of work doing a clean install after deleting some partitions and then re-installing all my programs.
Will it work when i put my windows 7 pro key? From my laptop, Its retail but Microsoft stopped giving free upgrade to windows 10 pro sadly . It gives error whenever i try to upgrade it on my desktop.

You're a hero! I didn't actually have to do another clean install of Windows and only had to input my Win10 Pro retail key and it did a quick upgrade. I'm so happy it worked.
Big Thanks for the help as I was lost trying to figure out why Windows was making me sign up or log into my Microsoft Account. Found out it was due to Windows Home Version. Then, I was like wait...I didn't select that. This helped me a lot with being able to quickly get the Pro Version installed.

You can also just add the notepad file to your existing windows installation files on your USB ( no need to re-download ). Worked for me. Cheers !
