Car Wash - Rose Royce (1975) - bass

  • It is sooo easy to overplay this song, with lots of wild and uncontrolled slapping. I plead guilty 100%, because I know I did it back in the '80s and '90s when this song was a must in every cover band I played in at that time. It was thé moment for the bass player to shine 3-4 times with the slap bass fill ins.
However... listen carefully to the original e.g. • Rose Royce - Car Wash from 3:30 when the bass goes solo. How did he make that sound ? Not by wildly slapping. Try it out. It's not slapping, but it neither is pure fingerstyle. On live videos you see the bass player indeed making a slapping movement, but on the record it is much more subdued and subtle. I'm guessing it is a very soft slap, with the fleshy part of the thumb on the A and E strings, and ever so lightly pulling the higher octave notes on D and G. This video shows what I came up with. Try it out yourself.
Recorded as ever as purely as possible: PB '76 with very old roundwounds (15+ yrs), bass into mixing console, then into notebook MicIn, no pre- or postprocessing. Only turned up treble up on the mixing console but it hardly has any effect due to the old roundwounds. On the record however the bass sound has the slight upper register accentuated. But remember: this is 1975, only the beginning of the crucial important disco and funk years 78-79-80, and only from 80-81 on production and especially the brilliance of sound in general became an important focus. So that explains why the slapping bass fills are not so sparkly or present, but in the light of that era, it must have been a real novelty.
Unfortunately the video has some sync problems in the slap passages. This is because of the light reflecting in the bass and the slow Windows XP notebook can't keep up with the camera frame datarate :).

TH-cam would have made my life so much easier when I was learning bass in the 70's, we had to replay songs over and over and interpret notes and hope you were playing it right. Players have no excuses anymore for not getting better, just play a video and practice.

Greetings BelgaBass! Man, thanks for clearing this playing up for me. I been playing this song like you did for quite a while and I thought I was getting it wrong when I was listening to other players trying to play it. Now I feel vindicated! I have a Fender MusicMaster bass I brought when I was in junior high school in 1975. It's sunburst color. Thanks again! Love your playing.

I honestly think that the wah sound in the intro is a bass wah. The guitar is doing other stuff while the wah is being played, but the bass doesn't. If you have two guitarists in the band, no problem. Or in the studio they overdubbed the wah. But it doesn't sound like a normal guitar wah. I've experimented with it, and believe I'm right.

Hi - I am 60 yo and just bought my first Bass Guitar. I have chosen this song as my first project. I have looked about and there are other versions and Bass Tabs but this version looks the best. However I cant find a matching Bass Tab. I have the gist but some parts are complex to follow so a link to this specific TAB would be wonderful.

Allow me to shock you then some further, and admit that I have not cleaned a bass (any of those in my vids) for at least the last 10 years :). I also do not possess any new bass, so no need to clean. The most recent one is the 5-string, somewhere beginning of '2000. It still has 3 of the the 5 original strings since I bought it 15 yrs ago, and also: never cleaned nor cooked. The white '78-79 Stingray is a rather recent almost perfect refinish , and I would be inclined to keep that one clean, but let's talk again in 5 years to see if I ever did...
