  • This week we explore the splendid Great Keppel Island and get up close and personal with one of the resident monotremes! We cross a stretch of water that is a four wheel drive track and cattle crossing at low tide, as well as, sailing back out to Lady Musgrave Island in the Capricorn Bunker Group on the hunt for the elusive Manta Rays.

    Yeah I reckon a bronze whaler would get the heart pumping ... Also a lot of people dont realize that a platypus is the echinda's closest relative in the animal kingdom and that echidnas and platypuses are the only animals that lay eggs.

    • @FreeRangeLiving

      monotremes, sub-set of mammals.....Andrew, "animals that lay eggs" is the wrong term (biology), should be "mammals that lay eggs"...just correcting for the international viewers...not taking the piss mate. Only 2 monotremes..platypus and the echidna of which there is sub-species or cousins depending on where they live in australia and I think new guinea, if I remember correctly from a school project back in the 70's.

    • @bunyipdan
      @bunyipdan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pearlyshells2430 Yes, was a little surprised our normally encyclopedic Troy didn't elaborate a little more on the Echidna (great footage, perfectly paired with soundtrack)....but guess there is a thing called Google so anyone truely interested in these wonderful little monotremes they could reach out. Pretty sure Andrew meant 'mammal' (nearly got away with it).
      FYI there are 2 living groups/Families of monotremes (egg laying mammals) Platypus (Family Ornithorhynchidae) and Echidna (Family Tachyglossidae), of these, there are actually 2 extant genera of echidna, Australia has several sub species of Tachyglossus aculeatus ssp. and New Guinea has several species of Zaglossus sp., this genera being recently revised by Flannery & Groves in 1998.....so unfortunately would have to now consider 1970's school report referrence a little out of date ;)

    • @andrewkeir2282
      @andrewkeir2282 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bunyipdan and Pearl Oh well I am an engineer and sailor... not a biologist .. thanks for correcting my mistakes and providing the crew with the correct information. They are fascinating animals. My parents often had an echidna snuffling around their house and there was apparently platypus in the creek at the bottom of our hill at our old place. The creek is in the suburbs and nowhere could it be considered pristine. We often looked for them but never sighted them.

    Saw an Echidna in Trafalgar, a country town in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. Used to see wallabies, koalas and wombats on a regular basis. Sadly not always alive. Once had to chase a big koala off the road as he was walking along the edge of it. With a bit of encouragement, he scuttled into the bush.

    Just finished binge watching all your episodes over the last few weeks. Awesome channel that is a bit different to a lot of the other sailing channels (more relevant to being in Aus & awesome to see it done on a smaller boat). Is "green on green" a thing in Australia, like passing on the "wrong" side? One option for passing each other if the other boat has less draft (i.e. cat with lifted boards), pretty common in commercial traffic on rivers. But needs to be negotiated via radio most of the times.

    Echidna's are the bull dozers of the bush. More noticeable at night they make a lot of noise cruising around and it's difficult believing it's from such a small animal. When threatened they have no flight response and don't immediately curl up in a ball but using their incredibly strong legs and claws they grip the ground and are extremely difficult to pick up. If you hit one in a car you may as well throw the tyre away as the broken off quills over time work their way through the rubber causing multiple punctures.

      Seawater has a magnifying effect and there are prescription masks available too.

      I only need them to read. My vision is fine otherwise. Tim is right, prescription masks, even bi-focal are available for a reasonable sum.

      I had noticed that Troy and forgot to mention it. My eyes are just the opposite. I can read fine but need glasses for distance. They do seem to be changing recently and I rarely wear my glasses around the house. Cheers!

      We have seen a few vids of his and think he's quite talented and a creative thinker but we don't regularly follow any particular vlogger.
