Okay Kiva, I have to give it to you! This was one of the best video's I've seen all year on TH-cam! I've needed these measurements without realizing it. I was doing guesses instead of just simply asking you to put a video like this together. This is freakin' awesome! Keep'em coming 😍
Kiva we are loving these newer videos with diagrams and models!! As a visual learner it makes all the difference in understanding how to adopt these tips in my own space. This is a really cool way to see your content evolve thanks so much!!
Really appreciating these new visual type of videos you are doing? It helps a lot to see what you talk about in a simulated room! Please do more like these!
Love this type of video and as an engineer I really appreciate the formulas and diagrams!! So helpful! I will be putting my primary bedroom (and whole house) back together hopefully in a couple of months after being out of it for over a year after a broken pipe flood and will be using your tips when I do - thanks! (On the art tip though, I think you meant to say “multiply” by .75… rather than “divide” because dividing by .75 will give you a result larger than the number you started with? Double check me on that. 😉)
I love this! Thank you! So easy to follow to improve everything in my bedroom! Now I know why it looks so awful. If you are willing, it would be great if you made a similar video for a livingroom and dining room. How far apart should chairs, couches, or coffee tables be? What is the height difference between an end table and a sofa table? Why would you use one vs the other? What size area rug for the livingroom is best? What size is the ideal space to leave between the edge of your dining table and the wall so your chairs have enough room for someone to comfortably move in and out from the table? I would rather spend money on furniture that works, instead of wasting time and money on what doesn't.
This is a great video Kiva!! I’m definitely saving this one for future reference! I will definitely need this when we move in!! 6.5 months and counting!!
Thank you, this information was amazing. You made it all make it make sense. You might need to say it again, I know the people in the back think they already know what to do. Thanks again, Looking forward to more content.
Thank you Kiva. Love these videos. the basic design facts. Ive been putting together a bedroom in my home as my own space and eventual home office/jewelry studio. I have a longer than wider room and your advice to put the furniture perpendicular will actually look so much better as well as the rug orientation. i was using a sofa as a room divider but it would just take up the whole floor. Thank you so much. The visuals help it all make sense!!
Putting bed right across the door is a very bad Feng Shui, esp if the soles of your feet are facing that door. I was once made that mistake. My health really suffers. So my friend suggested that I moved the bed perpendicular to the door. At first I didn't believe it but I figured out that I had nothing to lose in trying....and my health really improved quickly!
Thanks for this new video! Question: Rugs are impossible for me because of allergies (nope, those 'washable' ones aren't viable either- still *lethally* allergic). Are there any other options? If not, is there a design style that more lends itself to people who can't have rugs (so the space looks 'finished' without a rug)? A video on this would be great! Thanks!
Yes please! Rugs are our nemesis too, and in some places the wooden floor can be heated, so they don't fulfill a practical function. How can we replace them?
They used to do borders and insets in floors. If you have a fancy border around the edge of your room inlaid into a hardwood floor, that produces a rug effect. They used to make very fancy custom rug designs in linoleum (not vinyl), too. You can accomplish the same thing with tile. Of course, it isn’t flexible if you like to rearrange a lot, but it does produce a frame that wouldn’t trigger your allergies.
I watch way too many videos, because I knew all of these. Not the exact mathematical formulas, but the concept. There is nothing worse than a rug that is too small. Putting those curtains up as high as u can is a game changer. These are all great tips! ❤❤
Having just (almost) finished doing a whole new primary bedroom, I think I actually hit most of these points! My goal was a Ralph Lauren meets CB2 vibe… on a Wayfair budget. It’s a rental so I’m not planning on switching out the fan (I also live in the US south so it’s needed in the summer.) I opted for corded pendants over the nightstands so I could have more space to display my fragrances and books. I also did corner to corner curtains on two walls to give a luxe hotel vibe, and to give the windows behind the bed a more centered look…. Whoever built this house clearly didn’t plan for a king bed.. so I just use the curtain panels and center the opening behind the nightstands so you can’t tell the window extends to behind the headboard. I’m thinking about using the curtain rod as a bit of an art rail and potentially hanging some lightweight frames on picture wire to float in front of the curtains.
Omg I need to know the rules and Measurements This is so important I'm doing my room and my son room this weekend I'm happy that I saw this video Than you thank you !!!
Great tips! Two concerns, though. I don't think these tips are all that affordable; rugs, chandeliers, and even pillows can get really pricey! Also, when you say “divide by 0.5, 0.75, or 0.67,” I think you mean “multiply”, because dividing by 0.5 gives you twice the original number (i.e. the number that the original number is half of). Good tips, though, and if I'm restyling I will try to keep this video in mind!
THANK YOU KIVA!! This information really helped me. My husband and I brought our house last year and I have been taking my time decorating the house (or at least trying to take my time...lol). I am happy to see that I did everything right in my bedroom without even knowing it. Also, the information pertaining to the curtains helped me a lot pertaining to my dressing room. Kiva you are the Shyt! I appreciate you actually educate and not just focus on making things look pretty.
Oooh I do all of this already thanks to you and another creator on YT, other than lighting as I have fans which are on 24/7 as I live in the tropics, they are such an eye sore yet rather necessary. Thank you KB ☮️💜
I love these tips. Question: What to do when there are electric baseboard heaters under each bedroom window? This drives me insane. I can't do anything with it because of the damn heaters. Hope you can give me an answer if you can. 😊
Hey maybe the answer was in the video and I just missed it but I was curious about art height if I don't have a headboard or if I have a canopy for example what if I had the FRAME BLACK IRON QUEEN CANOPY BED from CB2? Sorry about the caps lazy copy/paste. Love the video thank you so much for sharing this information.
I am soooo grateful that u found your channel!!🙏🏾 I would like your opinion about wall murals in your bedroom? I’m redecorating my Mstr bedroom and I was thinking about a calming nature/scenic mural behind my bed. Thoughts?
Some great advice. I may definitely take up the rug and artwork advice. One question...I rent and the landlord placed a wooden baton above each window, for the fixing of curtain rails. Unfortunately, that baton is one inch above the window opening. HELP.
I know I am have 2 rewatch this video again…better yet, I am a book a 1 of your many sessions you have 2 offer. How much, and I'm probably sure I could go look, but I'm sure others have this same question. How much to just send a whole video of my home and we can go from there, lets do this Kiva, please and thank you!!!
Great post! Curtain Question. What do you do about bay windows? I have a wall with one bay window on each side. There is room for 6" to cover the middle wall (separated by 40"), but not on the opposite side as its the trim is butt up against the wall. What would be a good way to balance this look if using curtains?
But Kiva, can you put picture below a sconce on the sides of your bed (sconce on each side of the bed amd artwork below)? Thinking about doing affraid this may not work with overall scale.
I'm selling my home next spring and would love to use my cowhide rug in the living room. Our coffee table fits on the rug but none of the legs of the sofa and chair. Is this a styling mistake I'll be sorry I did? I live in a small town in WI which has been a vacation haven for rich Chicago residents since the early 1900s.
Thank you so much for this video!! My bedroom is narrow just like the picture in the video, and I do have my bed frame set up across the door and it feels small. The only problem is I have 3 windows in my bedroom, no matter where I place my bed frame, it will be covering a window, do you have any advice, for bed frame in front of a window?
What if you have tall windows & there isn't 6 inches of wall above the window frame? We have a vaulted ceiling and there's about 2 inches (or less) above the window frame & then about 4 inch moulding before the lower part of the ceiling. I currently just have wooden blinds & no curtains because it seems as though there's no room for a curtain rod
Such helpful and specific info - and love the visuals! A pillow question: where are we putting our "real" pillows that we sleep on? Hidden behind the decorative ones?
Thank you. I applied your tip with the curtains. Life changing. I changed all the curtains in my home this way and I am obessed. What do you think about adding the rug under the seating area instead of the bed?
You just answered like all of my bedroom questions 😂 excited to look for a rug and light fixture above the bed (I live in earthquake territory so a chandelier seems maybe not ideal lmao but I’d like to get a paper or other literally light pendant) that make sense!
I was hurt when I realized my new apartment has one part of the main bedroom with a sort of alcove and a lowered ceiling. It looks kind of nice, until I realized it now keeps me from hanging my curtains higher than exactly the window height, because one side of the windows runs directly under the lowered part. I can choose to leave that corner uncovered, though, and still hang them six inches above the frame, but I wonder if that would look weird, since then the curtain rod won't stretch past each corner of the window. I think that might make it look lop-sided.
How do I put art/mirrors behind my end tables and art above my headboard? What is that formula to get the height of those separate pieces correct? Our California king bed sits in a large alcove in our bedroom, if that matters.
Kiva, how would it work in a small room that just about fits a queen bed and 2 bedside tables and there’s no space for anything else? the flooring is covered in large whiteish tiles. do we just do side runners?
Sis where is your KB basic design book this was the best video ever 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾this is a lesson I have to do with my girls for homeschool home economics 101 ❤
❓Here's a question, Kiva, how would you decorate above the bed and behind the nightstands if they are all under a slanted ceiling? And does your answer change depending on the angle/steepness of the slant?
Wow great video! Does the same (as for the art above the bed) apply to the ottoman/upholstered trunk size at the bottom end of the bed ? I have a narrow large room and want to fill the space
Oh i found out this week is that the bottom of your side table lampshade (in your sitting room) should be at eye level. But bedroom it should be slightly lower, at your mouth level when sitting up reading in bed ! 😅
I have a slanted wall above a large window, so I can't place my curtains up to the ceiling. How do I decorate that slanted wall or lift up the curtains?
I no longer have lamps on each side of my nightstand. I realized that I hadn't even turned them on in a year. All I ever did was dust them and since I never read in bed, they were useless.
Thanks for the tip. The on that doesn't seem to work for me is the picture over the head of the bed. My bed head is on a low slanted wall. I'm not sure how to decorate that space.
I was watching this on my TV and had to get the phone so I could leave a comment lol. What an amazing video!! You did the math for us too. Thank you!! ❤
Hello Kiva!!! Hello everyone!!! Love this video!! What is the name of the long brown/rust pillow on the bed. What words should I use to search that style? Thanks!

I love this! The rug /pillow sizing to the bed is what I needed. You made it so clear and simple. Thanks!
First rate advice! This woman understands proportions and states them in an easy-to-understand style.
I love this! Thank you! So easy to follow to improve everything in my bedroom! Now I know why it looks so awful. This is a great video Kiva!! I’m definitely saving this one for future reference! I will definitely need this when we move in!! 6.5 months and counting!!

Yes! No more tripping over my 9,000 pillows!! Thx for the formulas!! You always have good videos… but THIS one!! Girl, you out did yourself!!
Thank you for these tips. Decor & Design is not for the faint of heart 😅. 💖🍂💖
OMG this video is just what I needed! Thank you so much for the visuals!
Thanks for watching!!!
Thanks for this new video!

Would a silk rug work?
Minimalists and Wabi Sabi interior styles usually don't decorate with rugs.
@bearswithglasses How about a silk rug? If that's not an option, finish the bedroom with a bench seat / rectangular ottomon, at the end of the bed.
They used to do borders and insets in floors. If you have a fancy border around the edge of your room inlaid into a hardwood floor, that produces a rug effect. Try a vinyl floor cloth mat. They are super cute, easy to clean, affordable and come in many beautiful patterns and sizes. Do an internet search
Super informative video, Kiva! I’m moving into and furnishing a new home in February and will reference this video for everything!

This is so important
I'm doing my room and my son room this weekend
I'm happy that I saw this video
Than you thank you !!!
such good, practical tips, thank you!
You've always been a beauty, but you are looking better, more energetic, happier all the time 😊
Thank you so much!! 💕💕
Maaaaaaaaaaaaatttttttthhhhhhh! Finally a real world example of why we need multiplication , fractions and division!😂
In a very small bedroom use the dresser as one of your nightstands.
Great video. I love the rug size suggestions.
Thank you!!

She also stated ...Reverse Image Items on Google😊👍🏿👍🏿
could you maybe make a video about arranging space in small space like room in flat where you need to have bedroom and office and space for clothes??
THANK YOU KIVA!! This information really helped me. My husband and I brought our house last year and I have been taking my time decorating the house (or at least trying to take my time...lol). Hi kiva, EXCELLENT video, i'm so happy when i see one of ur video pop up into my feed. Tyvm, "PEACE & LOVE". 🤌🏼👍🏻🖤🤎🩶
I'm so glad that YT has a way to adjust the playback speed.
Kiva is speaking faster than even her normal face pace speed😅

I learned so much and I love math! Keep it coming KB!!
Omg yay! Thanks for watching :)
Kiva thank you so much for sharing these fórmulas really appreciate your help. My bedroom was all wrong the art was to big. Love you 😅

Your window treatments does not work for us with a 1mx1m window. Placed inside a window cup with slanted roof. Short valance is enough

So much info and so well presented thank you so much. Can't find part2, is it out yet?
Substitute the rug for wall to wall carpet. You get the warmth and softness of carpet minus the fuss of sizing and positioning a rug.
Wow great video! Does the same (as for the art above the bed) apply to the ottoman/upholstered trunk size at the bottom end of the bed ? I have a narrow large room and want to fill the space

Rug going under the bed: yuk! 🤢 Dusty and horrible for asthmatics.
Great tips. Thanks! All are new to me.
That’s so great to hear!! Thank you :)
"you only have to give me 6 inches" lmaooooooo I woke up very immature this morning,. going to caffeinate now.
Hi Kiva, what would you advise on a bedroom that is carpeted from wall to wall and you can’t remove the carpet because it’s a rental?
Curious if I need art work if I have an arched canopy bed? If so how will that impact the size?
So are the pillow configurations in front of the pillows you actually sleep on? Or do you incorporate your sleeping pillow within them?
I am very excited to know more about hacks in designing. 😍😍
Wow you really helped me. I’m design challenged. I will try these tips.
All are brand new ideas.....thanks a million
Thanks for watching!! 💕
I love your channel & great information. Could you talk a little slower please.
Love these new video's. finding them very helpful for inspiration
Curtains! No one ever says what to do about radiators. We here in Pittsburgh have radiators. In every room and they are always under the windows.
@DIY with KB
Please do one of these with a long water fall console table without storage.
I no longer have lamps on each side of my nightstand. I realized that I hadn't even turned them on in a year. All I ever did was dust them and since I never read in bed, they were useless.
Great tips Kiva! How do you hang curtains when there is a radiator under one window? I have two in my bedroom.
"head to your bedroom and look at your rug." ...meanwhile my bedroom does not have a rug 😅
Thanks for the tip. The on that doesn't seem to work for me is the picture over the head of the bed. My bed head is on a low slanted wall. I'm not sure how to decorate that space.
Umm ok but I would love for you to design my bedroom because i swear none of this applies
Absolutely great advice!!
Thank you!!
I was watching this on my TV and had to get the phone so I could leave a comment lol. What an amazing video!! You did the math for us too. Thank you!! ❤
Aw thank you!!
LOVED this very informative and helpful video Kiva -- thank you!!!!
Thanks for watching!! 💕💕
Is there a rule about how far a nightstand should be from a wall? What about how far it should be from the bed?
Oh wow, so much useful information. Thanks so much!
Thank you for the measurements! What art do u suggest above round headboards?
Great tips. But what about basement masters with low ceilings?
now I need one for a bathroom. Mine is just so spacious, I feel like is a lot of wasted space and I have no idea how to decorate it.
Should mirrors be treated the same as art when it comes to being placed on the wall behind the nightstand
Wowwwwwww!! Something I never knew I needed but needed but didn’t know how to ask
@Kiva can you tslk about decor for a very tall headboards
Thank you, super helpful!
So happy it was helpful!!
Hello Kiva!!! Hello everyone!!! Love this video!! What is the name of the long brown/rust pillow on the bed. What words should I use to search that style?
Thanks!
Hi! Try searching for “lumbar pillow”.
This was very helpful! Thank you!
