      I was Living and working in London in my 20's and got into Synths in 1978. What a time, I got to try nearly all the classic synths, many which were unaffordable except to the rich and famous. Prices have changed now and so have the synths, far more powerful and very capable of recreating those old sounds :)

      Fun fact: Did you know that Magne Furuholmen wrote that riff when he was only 15 years old? He was in a band called Bridges with a-ha band mate Pål Waaktaar. The song that would become Take On Me was then called “The Juicy Fruit Song” (named after the gum). It would later become a song called “Lesson One” after Mags and Pål met up with Morten Harket. “Lesson One” flopped miserably, so the three of rewrote the lyrics and the music, and “Take On Me” was born. It took them three tries to get the song to chart, and the third time was the charm, because not only did they have an awesome song, but they had an awesome music video to go along with it! ❤️

      True WingChun
      Thanks for your detailed explanation. All I know is that Jump was done on an analog synth. I agree with you that FM synths sound ok too, I bought a DX7 in 1991 and still have it and even though I mainly play vintage analog synths, I appreciate the sound of the DX7. I am also considering buying a Roland D50, that was an FM synth too, right? Honestly I didn't know where I stopped liking digital sounds but it must have been when they transited to sampled/wav or whatever it's called. I also don't like the sound of modelling synths, I do have a King Korg but never touch it, I will probably sell it again. But all this is a matter of taste, people who do enjoy these modern sounds should use them and make music with them because in general music and making music is just awesome.

      +True WingChun
      no only yamaha did FM synths they had the patent on that.
      The concurency of DX synth were mostly digital synth with PCM banks, and a digital filter.
      But at the begining of the 80's there was numerous analog synths like the popular JP serial from roland.

    • @SJNstudios
      @SJNstudios 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rieni Otten The Roland D50 is a digital subtractive and sample based synth. Samples are typically used for transients, or sometimes to add "colour". It is a powerful synth with a lot of potential, but I find many of the presets to be somewhat dated. Good example of an early virtual-analog. Programming it is a PITA, like almost everything from that era.

      @dougiemilnephotography756 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes they will. Because in 30-40 years' time, the teenagers of the 2020s will be looking for the same nostalgia fix as us teenagers of the 1980s. And they'll still be telling their kids that they don't make music like they used to.

    • @AutPen38
      @AutPen38 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep. There are a lot of us in our fifties that are nostalgic for the '80s, but people in their forties love '90s music, just like my parents think that music peaked in the '60s. It's kind of weird to think about it, but in 30 years, people in care homes will be moaning about their painful hip joints and knees while they shuffle around to "classic pop" from 2010.

The dude played what he wanted to play, and he played it authentically. He didn't play any Duran Duran, Human League, Howard Jones, Kraftwerk, Rush or Gary Newman etc etc either - so what?

    My biggest complaint with this video is how robotic the songs sound. I understand the 80s was big on sequencing so everything tended to be locked on the beat, but especially with Rockit the songs needed some sense of feeling.

      A lot of that was intentional. Devo was one of the first and influenced others. It represented human loss or submission (or DEeVOlution) to the new technology. The Buggles "Age of Plastic" used mechanical sounding synths for the same reason. After that a lot of people copied the sound (e.g. Van Halen) without understanding what it implied.
