Awesome! I remember reading the beginning of Children of Dune when I was in 7th grade (way back in the mid-90s), and really struggling to pick up the missing context (I think it was the third book in the series). Decades later, I read the pre-quels by his son.

@@BigFrakkinOgre That's not fear - it's _panic_ that precludes all thought and leaves the sufferer blindly reacting. And sure, fear can be experienced instinctually by mindless things, whereas despair cannot. But I would say that makes despair _more_ of a "mind-killer" than fear, since only those with a mind can fall victim to it.

The litany against fear is actually a great life philosophy, along with a lot of of the philosophy you see in the dune series (the original Frank Herbert series, not the garbage his untalented son crapped out). I have it posted and framed on my wall and look at it almost every day to remind myself that there are priorities and to not let the fear take over.
Calling his son "untalented" is inaccurate. He's a competent writer. His work is amazing, but it's not garbage. Try writing a scince fiction novel sometime, then compare it to one of his books.
Brian Herbert's Dune books are disappointing because in many way he missed the point of Frank's writing. However, if Brian Herbert's book were their own standalone series and not related to another IP, they'd be pretty good.
@ it would have been better if Brian Herbert had written those books without shackling the Dune name to them, I agree. They would have simply been largely forgettable science fiction books with blocks that really didn’t make much sense. In the end, all they did was dilute his father’s superior work in the eyes of new generations.
@ I disagree, his work is absolute garbage. The writing is stilted, the characters that are described in the book are a little more than 2D cut outs with name recognition in order to steal from the superior work of his father.

Good luck on your chemo. When my mom and aunt were diagnosed, they were both sad to learn that they could no longer eat walrus.

Good luck.
It's lovely to hear these classics through Tex's voice.
I'm really enjoying all the poetry readings.
The Dune 2 music is a nice touch ^^
Bless you for including the Dune 2 soundtrack in there as well. Frank Klepacki's vision for the sound of Dune is by far my favorite.
