    This video explains the best and least non-toxic way to clean 3D resin prints using Mean Green, an ultrasonic cleaning vat, a small amount of isopropyl alcohol and water.
    The workflow is as follows:
    1. Remove prints from build plate
    2. Place prints in pickle jar filled with Mean Green. Agitate for 30 to 60 seconds
    3. Place prints into ultrasonic cleaner filled with Mean Green heated to 50 Celsius. Run ultrasonic cleaner for 5 minutes
    4. Remove prints from ultrasonic cleaner and immediately remove supports
    5. Clean prints using spray bottle of 99% isopropyl alcohol and a soft toothbrush for 30 seconds each
    6. Place prints in pickle jar filled with water and agitate for 30 to 60 seconds
    7. Place prints in container on a paper towel, cover and let air dry for 12 to 24 hours
    8. Prints are then ready to cure in UV curing station of your choice

      It works really well if you run it in a heated ultrasonic cleaner. Then you just need to hit your prints with just a little squirt of IPA and a toothbrush at the very end. :-)

      Glad you found the video helpful. The workflow in this video is one that I pieced together after months of trial and error. And, also, from watching hours of other printers' videos on TH-cam. I took the best and most useful parts (for me at least) and incorporated them into my cleaning routine. None of it is set in stone and I encourage people to use or ignore parts of my cleaning process to suit their needs and their setups. Best of luck with all of your prints. Thanks for watching.

    Low budget tip: If you don't have a fancy cleaner, you can switch the bath and the toothbrush step. If you scrubb them after the first stage wash, it'll be more messy, but the scrubbing will only need a manual rinse in iso afterwards.
    Great video, I like your style! Some people cut videos down to not show any mistakes (like you dropping the mini like 5 times 😂), but the more extended cut type of video is way closer to reality and shows a lot of detailed steps in between. Keep it up!

    How has Mean Green been holding up? Do you filter the resin out of it every so often or just put it out for hazardous waste pickup every so often? I picked up 2 gallons to try out but haven't done it yet, need to think out all the maintenance/recovery/disposal things I'll be doing... I like the idea of using heat cycle on the ultrasonic (Unfortunately the heater on mine is burned out though), and reduced odors of the Mean Green...

    This is a great video especially for us limited on funds and space to work with. I am doing my research before buying a 3D resin printer and your process is very doable. How do you handle your dirty mean green once you have depleted it's cleaning potential, can it be placed in a location where sun light UV cures any resin within the mean green solution and then properly disposed of. Thank you for your time and for sharing your process. Happy printing.

    I'm a total noob at 3D printing, but have you heard of anyone using Windex as an alternative to Mean Green or IPA? Also you need to further UV cure your prints after removing them from your Mars?

  • @gman9543
    @gman9543 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks, that was super helpful! Do you do anything with your printing tank, or does it just sit on the printer all the time and just gets topped off with new resin? What do you do if you want to change resins?

    • @3DPrintingMinis
      @3DPrintingMinis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't remove the vat unless I have a catastrophic failure that either sticks to the FEP or leaves lots of pieces of failed print floating around in the vat. If I'm running prints using the same resin I'll just top off and print the next batch. If you change resin you have to change your vat and you need to wipe down and clean all sides of your build plate with IPA and some paper towels. Some people buy multiple vats to store different color resins to make switching between them easier. You need to make or buy covers for these vats and make sure not to spill them. I've never done this but it sounds like a cool idea if you're someone who prints a lot of different kinds of resin all of the time. I have a very soft silicone BBQ baster I got at the dollar store that I use to gently swirl around and strain resin through to check my vat for failed pieces and supports between prints. This seems to work well.

    • @3DPrintingMinis

      They both work great when used properly. It’s really just up to personal preference, how much space you have and what you can afford.

  • @RadiationDuck
    @RadiationDuck 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi - great video. I was wondering: Is there any residue from the resin left in de ultrasonic cleaner after the cleaning ?
    And how long do you cure prints ?

    • @3DPrintingMinis
      @3DPrintingMinis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The inside of the cleaning vat is stainless steel, so any residue just settles at the bottom. When you clean the tank out (depending on how often you print) it pours out and you can wipe up any remaining residue or bits with a paper towel.
      As far how long to cure prints, I have a video about that on my channel. It depends on what kind of resin you're using, what type of curing station you have, and the models you're printing.

    Just watching through your video series since I just started 3D printing myself, I think it'll be super helpful. Question though, if one didn't have an ultrasonic cleaner, what would you replace that step with? Or would you say this method requires an ultrasonic cleaner?

    • @3DPrintingMinis
      @3DPrintingMinis  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's doable. Some people will use a wash and cure station instead. Or, they'll use 3 separate containers of IPA (not too clean, pretty clean, and very clean) and rinse/dunk their models 1-2-3 in each for 30 to 60 seconds each. I have used this technique and it works quite well.

    • @3DPrintingMinis
      @3DPrintingMinis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I forgot to mention it in the video but it's in the video description. It's straight Mean Green (about 2/3's full in the vat) heated to 50 degrees Celsius. The heating it to 50 C is really what makes the prints come out so clean and helps the support come off so easily.

    Do you find that the prints will sometimes start pitting? I’ve found that these tiny holes appear and I’m not sure if it’s due to cavitation erosion from the ultrasonic or some kind of chemical reaction with water

    Hello friend, the information you have given me is incredible, I looked for it for a long time, I really appreciate that you take the time to give us this kind of advice. I tell you that I make 3D prints to make negatives for chocolate bars, it is important that the prints come out very bright, what resin do you recommend that can shine after all the cleaning and curing steps you mention. It is important to mention that when making the silicone copy this 3D piece should not have additional paint to shine because it comes off or makes the silicone not cure or catalyze. On the other hand, I have seen that you have a digital humidity and temperature meter, can you pass me the link of the one you use as well as the mat on which you place the prints?

    • @3DPrintingMinis
      @3DPrintingMinis  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure resin prints are safe to use with food or food products. You should contact the manufacturer of the resins you are using to make sure they are safe to use for your purposes.

    • @3DPrintingMinis
      @3DPrintingMinis  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s Mean Green heated to 50 degrees C. You can also use heated water instead. In that case you can fill a ziplock bag or heavier duty Mylar bag with Mean Green or 99% IPA. Either method works. It’s just personal choice.

  • @BrentGe0rge
    @BrentGe0rge 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great vid! Very informative :) I was wondering if you could share your workflow re: cleaning out the Ultrasonic Cleaner. Do you just drain all the fluid/resin out of the tank into another container to allow the resin to settle to the bottom before cleaning it out?

    • @3DPrintingMinis
      @3DPrintingMinis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The clean out process is pretty simple. If I'm running Mean Green inside of the vat I put the ultra sonic cleaner up on my workbench and drain vat (through the little drain spout on the side) into a large, empty OJ or Apple juice bottle. And then wipe the inside down with clean paper towels. Then spray some 99% IPA in the vat and wipe it down with more clean paper towels. That's it.
      Then I take the bottles of old Mean Green to the hazardous waste disposal drop off site in my town and cure the paper towels in the sun on the side of my house before throwing them away.
      I've recently switched to filling the cleaner vat with plain tap water and putting my cleaning Mean Green into large, sealable mason jars. Then I only need to clean out the jars every so often. And the water in the ultra sonic vat I can just dump down the sink because there aren't any chemicals or resin in it. I'll try to make a video of this new process I'm using soon.
      Thanks for watching. I appreciate it.

    • @3DPrintingMinis

      Not after I wash them in water and cure them. I think the smell of the resin itself is more pervasive than the Mean Green smell. But that's just my opinion.

    ive seen people mention and i havent even ordered my ultrasonic cleaner yet.. but people put the item in a sandwich bag or something sealed full with IPA and drop that into the Ultrasonic cleaner filled with water and it keeps all the resin out of the ultrasonic.. have you ever tried that? how often do you clean out your tank?

    • @3DPrintingMinis
      @3DPrintingMinis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've seen people discuss this method as well. It seems to work really with when using IPA (i.e. 99% alcohol). The reason being that you don't want to heat up a vat of IPA to 50 C/120 F because, well, danger/fire/explosions/etc. :-)
      Also, IPA is kind of expensive so using a bag of it makes it last longer and wastes less. Instead of a plastic bag I've seen people use a metallic mylar bag to hold their IPA as well.
      I went with Mean Green because it's less expensive, less flammable and doesn't smell as bad. Also, I can leave the Mean Green in the ultrasonic cleaner vat for months (as long as it's covered) and nothing much seems to happen with it. I've been using the current Mean Green vat for over 2 months (and dozens of plates of prints) and I'm still getting really good results from it.
      I'm a little iffy on heating up a bag of IPA (even if it's in water) on a workbench inside my garage. Seems like too much potential for an accident. But, yes, people definitely do it and many seem to really like using the method.
