  • The geopolitical situation in the world is rapidly heating up. The conflict in Syria is still raging, it exploded almost in the very center of Europe when a full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine began, then erupted in Gaza between Palestinians and Israelis, the Houthis are mercilessly shelling merchant ships in the Red Sea, blocking the Suez Canal, China is carnivorous towards Taiwan. In such a situation, you need to be armed to the teeth. In such a situation, every piece of weaponry matters. The United States has begun a major modernization of the A-10 Thunderbolt attack aircraft.

At my last duty station Nellis AFB in the mid 1990's. I was talking to an Army officer helicopter pilot. Even at that time the Air Force was trying to get rid of the A10. The Army pilot told me Army pilots were praying for the Airforce to dump the A10. He said the day that happens Army pilots will be standing in lines to get an A10.

This is the first time I have heard the term "Beardstalker." And I worked on A-10's at McClellan AFB during the late 70's doing a wing overhaul. And as far as the age of the aircraft, the B-52 is older than the people flying them. The estimate is that plane will be around for another 20 years. C-130's have been around since the 1950's. As long as they see some value in the aircraft they will keep 'em flying.

When the A-10 was given the nickname of "Warthog", supposedly it was because the plane was ugly. Not so. It may not be the most attractive plane in the air, but it has a beauty all its' own. The Airforce should definitely hang onto the "Warthog".

In 1988, as the Superforeman/Test Cell Engineer [that was my company-given title, not of my choosing] at Hawker de Havilland Victoria Ltd, I, together with a group of fellow Engineers & Specialist staff, visited several US military aircraft manufacturers for instruction & hands-on training for the upcoming Assembly & Test of the Australian Army's Blackhawk & our Navy's Seahawk Helicopter fleets.
My first task was to gain insight into the upcoming Inspection/Assembly/Test [AIT] of the T700-GE-701C [Blackhawk] & the more powerful -401C [Seahawk] engines powering those choppers.
This training was at GEAE's Main Engine Facility in Lynn, Massachusetts, and one of their Depot Level Maintenance [DLM] facilities in Arkansas, Kansas [for the later DLM support program for our Army and Navy].
My second task was to gain experience in the Assemble & Test of the Tail & Intermediate Gearboxes [Transmissions] for them at the Sikorsky Helicopter Facility in Stratford, Connecticut, as I was to have the added title of Inspector-In-Charge for those chunks of Metal & Magnesium final sign-off before submission to our Government's Department of Quality Assurance [DQA]! The critical gear contact area being the most significant concern to prevent premature failure that could result in the destruction of the airframe and the death of the crew.
Hell's bells, what's another added cap to wear without any extra pay 😆 😂 🤣.
What has this to do with the infamous A-10 Warthog? I can hear you ask.
Well, while I was at GE's Lynn plant, I got to play with the TF34-GE-100 engine, which powers the Warthog.
There was also an A-10 on-site that I got to climb into & over, which was awesome.
Thus began my love affair with this ugly duckling of an Aircraft that looked so brutally aggressive ❤😮.
I was used to seeing our RAAF's fleet of sleek MD FA-18A fighters whose engines I was also responsible for testing, the GEAE F404-GE-400 😊.
I left GE, Lynn with an A-10 stubbie holder, a Warthog & a TF34 lapel pins 😅, a lot of information about the A-10 [almost more than for the T700 that I was there for 😀] & an appreciation of an excellent attack aircraft. 🎉👌

"Beardwalker"? Well it be a shame to replace it. And there's nothing that comes as close to as good as the A10 is. And if the A10 cant do it then it probebly shouldent do it. Might be better ways to deal with that target anyway. Like something it cant shoot down like a tank or a missile thats to fast for the AA to deal with. Might boost the terror factor to, making them think long and hard before they do that anytime soon. And the sound of the A10 and its gun is a huge moral booster for its allies.

In most wartime situations the A-10 is not a first strike ground attack weapon, the F-35 plays that role with the stealth and agility to get in, take out the attack systems capable of bringing down A-10s. The role of the A-10 is close in air and ground support, suppression of adversary strength positions without advanced targeting and weapon systems. The A-10 role is versatile and hardly unique, easily adaptable to many missions with a variety of capable weapons systems. The problem with our leaders behind the stars and bars is that the forget what real war is and the support that's required in wartime air to ground battles and there are really two types of close range craft that can support these roles, the A-10 when it comes to fixed wing craft, and rotary blade helicopters for other missions.

The missing context about the A-10 is the air dominance / superiority doctrine of the Air Force. In other words, the A-10 will not be a play in close air support in a high threat anti-air environment until most if not all of the sophisticated air defenses have been neutralized, leaving pretty much just the manpads to deal with.
This was the case in the 1991 Gulf War and the second war against Iraq. The A-10 was very effective in both at a time Iraq had one of the densest air defense systems in the world. How did that happen? The Air Force first neutralized Iraqi's main air defense systems and the A-10 had to deal mostly with the should fired anti-aircraft missiles and ground fire, which it did with great effectiveness.
The A-10 will be as effective as the Air Force can gain air dominance / superiority.

Unlike most planes, the A-10 was designed around the GAU-8/A Avenger. When they designed the F-35, no gun was initially planned to be installed in or attached to the plane. The A-10 has a major role in protecting ground forces that are advancing through terrain with the use of its gun. Just the sound of its engines has made enemy forces retreat. Also, the F-35 has had several problems with its mission capability, especially during adverse weather conditions.
Some politicians have finical ties to the manufacture of the F-35 which could have been the cause for trying to push out the A-10. If the Air Force (the ones that operate the A-10 and not the Army) wanted the A-10 to have a stealthier profile, why didn't they upgrade the styling of the wings during retro fit and give the aircraft a coat of non-reflecting stealth paint?

When I joined the Army in 1977, we all knew that the USAF had a bad reputation of flying too high and not getting fire on target. It's why naval air support was preferred because they would fly low enough putting fire on target. The A-10 reversed that reputation by actually performing effective CAS missions.

As an aircraft battle damage tolerance engineer the A-10 stands out far more than a F-16 or F-35 with its high survivabiity thro' high degree of airframe and systems redundancy as well as its ability to operate out of shorter semi-prepared airstrips. The F16s have just been delayed by 6-12 months to meet full mission operational capability. The upgraded Super A-10 will also have defensive air to air missiles. Perhaps there has been too much focus on the F16 when its Swedish JAS139 Gripen alternative should have been pursued at least in parallel. "Baskets in put eggs your one don't" springs to mind and 18 months lost.

I will never forget when I was in basic training and we had a full bird colonel visit to tell us the importance of our military. Many in my class were tired and disinterested at first. The colonel was talking about the importance of small details and being focused, intent, driven, and performance. Every task and responsibility was vital to every mission and weapon. And then he said, "In combat, I would give up my grandmother for an A-10, so you make sure it is perfectly functional." My favorite aircraft since. Best to those pilots and the servicemen they help protect.

That sexy, sexy aircraft is getting updated! I'm so glad to hear it'll be protecting troops for a long time to come. I'm just so glad. And the new missiles sound like great additions. Just never lose that front cannon. :)

I consider this 2B one of OUR "sickest" military aircrafts, & with ALL those missiles loaded on it, That's enough to make the Devil itself think twice...!!!!! 👿
