Actually that's not the original reason at all, and it started in California where they just had one or two steady burning red lights to the front, and an amber flashing light to the rear. Then others had red steady burning rotating visible beams that appeared as flashing, but then found other cars were more likely to run into black & white patrol vehicles engaged on a police stop on a high -speed highway at night, especially where there were no light poles because drivers could lose their depth of field because three dimensional perception was lost. Think about it.
i think they're red and blue is because red and blue are on opposite ends of the visible light spectrum so they're the most contrasting lights to each other. the more contrasting, the more visible
Most the new studies are saying now that all blue is actually better under all conditions. These studies change all the time. I would stick with all blue.
I’ve heard red is more visible in the day, but I never really noticed. You’d think blue would be better in the day and night. Most of Alabama and Georgia use all blue, so that’s usually all I see. Some depts use red and blue, but they’re rare.
I was a cop and I was going to an accident scene at night during a heavy rain. I almost rear-ended an ambulance parked at the scene. They only had red lights, and in the rain, it all got washed out into a blur and blended in with all the other tail lights of the heavy traffic.
Actually not entirely correct. Red and blue create a condition called chromostereopsis. The red and blue are contrasting wavelengths of light which when combined create a confusing and out of place effect. The red and blue in tandem are far more visible and eye catching.
Ha! N here I thought there were deeper meetings as to why. Thought blue represented law enforcement and red for emergency. So therefore police officers respond to emergency situations and serve as law enforcers
Nice. Stole a thumbnail from chrisfix. Why did you do that? It’s rude.
I was hoping to see a comment mentioning this😂

and in Michigan, the law restricts Blue to police vehicles::Oddly enuff, the State Police use only red. Go figure.
@@mister-v-3086WRONG, they have a red bubble but there is red and blue lights on the pushbar, mirror and rear.
Some states it's all blue and others all red.

Same
Some cars have

FHP are doing it
Usually southern states have solid blue. Some states like Massachusetts and Maine use solid blue
Oh look, stolen picture
The first time news is fun.
I just thought about this, when I watched the intro to “Gotham” a series on Netflix. Thanks for the video, on point!
But Florida Highway Patrol only use blues no?
On most new patrol cars.
