CUTTING vs BULKING - Which One FIRST For Beginners?

  • As a beginner, should you cut or bulk first? Cutting and bulking has its uses, and both are necessary if you want to optimize your gains. Trying to do both at the same time can also create results, but typically not as effective as doing one or the other. So for beginners, which one should it be first? Cutting weight and burning fat or bulking to build muscle and get stronger? Well, I have an opinion on such a matter!

      I'm the same way. Always been kinda skinny but in good shape. At a certain point I told myself "fuck being small and skinny, im tired of this". Basically I tried to gain as much weight as I could and lift as much weight as I could often. I definitely went for straight bulk starting a few years ago. The "shredded" kind of build looks better and is more visually appealing BUT more mass and bulk kind of strength looks more powerful. I just want brute strength, simple as that.

    When I first started my fitness journey I cut fat the wrong way by severely restricting my calories and remaining sedentary. This left me “skinny fat” with no muscle or strength. I’ve been bulking now for about 8 months and it’s difficult for me because I do see the fat piling back on but I also see the muscle so I’m hoping when I go through my cutting cycle in about 3 months I’m going to reveal the body of my dreams 😍 until I start bulking again lol

    When I first started lifting a year ago I was a bit overweight so I decided to cut first but my goal was not to lose wait and look skinny but lose weight and maintain muscle. For beginners like me I would definetly recommend cutting first. Lift weights and stay on a calorie deficit of about 3-500 calories if you go below that you might lose muscle as well so its important not to starve yourself either. I've been doing this for about a year now and Ive seen amazing results which keeps me motivated. Heck I even have a six pack now and I didn't even dream of getting a six pack. Just remember you cant see results overnight, you have to stay consistent and focus on you're diet aswell. Diet is 70% exercise is 30%. Just keep grinding and you can do it too!

    • @danhk96
      @danhk96 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cutting is eating at a calorie deficit and bulking is eating at a calorie surplus. Training should be balanced accordingly. If you are cutting your training should be focused around trying to preserve as much muscle as possible and when you're bulking you should focus on building muscle mass. As far as cardio goes for bulking I honestly don't know (I'm rather new to this myself), but it surely doesn't make sense to cardio on a cut unless you balance your diet in such a way that you hit the deficit you want by doing cardio.

    • @nightsphenom7122
      @nightsphenom7122 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      More like exercise is 70% and diet is 30%. You can eat really well but if you don’t exercise regularly or don’t use correct form. You got little to no results.

    • @danield8528
      @danield8528 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@iramak4195 If you bulk, don't always do excessive amounts of cardio. You will lose muscle mass that way. Do 40/60 between cardio and lifting weights.
      Cutting is for people who are overweight. You have to lose it all to bulk. But, if you never worked out before and you aren't one of those people that went from cut to bulk to back to cutting and bulking, you can lose weight AND bulk at the same time, you just need to know the right workouts to do. It's just something that happens.
      Also avoid losing more than 2 pounds a week. That's not healthy, and you can mess with your body if you do. And if say you're like 300 pounds and want to lose a lot of weight, you will get loose skin. Avoid this by also filling those spots with doing weight training, as I told you already, and using cream and taking supplements. It'll still be loose, but not as noticable. Hoped this helped.

      @AndreInvests 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You should slim down to 9%-10% body fat and see what you're working with muscle mass wise. Its hard to notice your gains or muscle definition when your body fat is high. You can gain muscle on a cut but you either would have to be a newbie lifter, "enhanced" lifter or be the case of muscle memory after a long hiatus (which has happened to me). If you're a natural experienced lifter you will have a hard time packing on muscle during a cut since your going to be in a caloric deficit. PictureFit has topics on this as well.

    I’m opting for a lighter bulk as I get into workout out regularly. My thought behind it was to ensure my body had everything it needs to grow and take advantage of the newbie gains and then keep steady once that tapers off.
    Or is that wishful thinking? I wasn’t even going to think about cutting until I felt like I had a substantial amount of muscle built.

    Great advice, I love all of your videos. You could have mentioned that fat cells are their own endocrine gland (they can release estrogen which goes against trying to build muscle). Other hormones can be released by fat cells too but, in the case of building muscle, this would be the important one. Also, I am interested in what education you have as this career field interests me greatly! If there is a video mentioning this then please link it. Keep up with your video format, it is very easy to follow

    When i first started working out i was at a mere 54 kg weight. I started working out using mass gainers and eating every one and a half hour. I started to gain weight and reached my peak weight of 75 kg. Afterwards i had the goal to shed as much fat as possible with minimum muscle loss. I am currently at 63 kg weight with a fairly decent muscle mass and a decent looking body. Never felt better.

    Do both- half to 1 hour of cardio early in the morning(HIIT is recommended, but not mandatory) and 1 and a half to 2 hours of weights in the afternoon/evening . Make sure you have about 1 to 2 days of rest per week. I do a high slow carb, medium protein ,low fat breakfast. Half carb, half protein lunch (again low fat), and a high protein low carb low fat dinner. Intermediate snacks would be either fruit, or oatmeal bars, but don't eat too much of them. You can have 1 cheatmeal per week(litteraly everything you want, but only one meal of 1 day for the whole week). Its tough but you get used to it after a week or so . works for me like a charm. And its really better to train two times a day for a shorter duration than to give it all you got at once in the end of the day in my opinion.also, I find the twice a day routine quite appealing, because you can make your exercises more intense because of the lower duration. I don't calorie count, I just calculate macros. My favourite cheatmeal would be a 150 gram pack of peanuts- simple, but I really crave fat after a week of low fat meals lol. And still its "good" fats.

    Awesome video bro. I also agree at the beginning you said it depends and that is true it depends on the person what I do and what I intake on food will react differently on somebody else. So even though i might dirty bulk it doesnt create a tummy for me cause i have a fast metabolism and im in the gym 5 days a week. My body reacts positive to weights and all i do is stay cut at 190lbs at 5'9 and 40 years old. I have always had an athletic body whether i work out or not.

    i Started 3 months ago as skinny fat (now i must say i was not THAT "fat"), the first thing i did was bulk and i couldn't be happier. I had gotten a bit bigger (mostly my pecs and shoulders) to the point where people i hadn't seen or a while were surprised and gained around 20 pounds in 2 months. At this point i didn't look so fragile and skinny anymore since i had "some" muscle (as much as you can get in just 2 months). For me it is honestly so motivating seeing growth first, now i can slowly cut for a good base before i really start ( and this time while looking more ripped ). Also i kinda fucked up my 3rd month because i made a mistake in my calories so nothing happened during that time.

    I started with cutting and it was the best decision I could have made. I saw progress (fat loss) and gained some muscle. As many people did I started working out to look attractive for girls and they don't care whether or not you can bench a lot. The only thing they care about is the abs, which I got during my cut, so It kept me motivated and as I slowly stopped seeing gains I decided to bulk.

    I have to disagree here. The newbie stage can be much more beneficial in terms of progressive overload and muscle growth when lean bulking or maintaining, and if a newbie starts off cutting muscle gains aren't gonna be that visible either cause the rate of muscle growth, although much faster than an advance lifter, won't be as noticable and the decrease in overall weight will make them feel skinnier.
    The newbie stage is great and not taking advantage by cutting is a waste in my opinion. I don't think one should ever bulk when begginer, cause it's usless fat gain, but a maintenance phase or slight surplus will do the trick, and they might even recomp very well at maintenance. Unless we're talking about a fat individual, maintenance would be the ideal.
    BTW I still don't think is necessary for a begginer to track calories, but if they where to do it this is my humble opinion. Cheers!

      Performance Fitness I agree. As a beginner, one should focus on one thing at a time. Initially, that thing will be to become familiar with the lifts. Behavioral change takes time, and I would even recommend a beginner to not worry about drastically changing their initial diet too much from the get go. Trying to thrust yourself into a fitness-centered world will be overwhelming if someone does it all too quickly.
      Eat how you've been - which is probably to maintain - and simply put on mass. Once you get more experienced, then you can start worrying about the science of nutrition.
      One step at a time.

      The newbie benefits are still there even in a cut and also still there when they decide to start bulking. It is a matter of potential limit, with factors such as myostatin in play. It's not simply because they haven't lift before.

    • @MatiasStrengthCoach
      @MatiasStrengthCoach 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I respect your opinion and you do have some valid points, still I recommed my athletes to keep doing what they are doing and slowly start changeing the quality of their foods before start thinking about calories, stuff like getting enough protein, limited amount of processed foods, quality veggies, etc. Then, maintenance will be a good place to start for recomping easily and getting strong

      As a long skinny person you need to eat a LOT. Not bulking first would be stupid in your case. In fact, anyone would experience better results if they bulked first, but as implied in the video, you gotta get things right. (Motivation, technique etc).
      Anyways, if you're 6'4" and male and weigh like 160lbs, make sure you eat like 6000kcal a day during the newbie phase. The "eat 3500 calories a day to gain weight" online calculators don't apply to you.

      @GrogsWorld 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      My motivation for going to the gym is to stay in shape for ACTUAL sports - and I am not talking Golf or Softball. I am a 54 year old man who still plays basketball with guys who are 20 to 30 years younger than me. I don't need to get bigger. I am already the strongest guy on the court because all those young fools on the court have not figured out that they can improve their game by getting stronger in the gym. They think playing basketball is all they need to stay in shape. If I was a skier, I would go to the gym so I could have more strength to control myself on the slopes. If I was a soccer player, I would be going to the gym to magnify by explosiveness with squats, deadlifts, etc. If you are into body building that is fine, but take up MMA or something else, even a puss sport like soccer, so you actually have a purpose for all those hours you spend in the gym.
