I always take both if it’s a threat of rain. The weight of a premium wind shell’s so low can’t justify not taking one since I’ll likely have it on until it starts legit raining. Whether it’s a Houdini or Airshed depends on the conditions, but I’ll tend towards Airshed for breathability. If I don’t need a hard shell, I’ll wear the AS for when moving, & throw the Houdini on top when resting. If I bring a shell it’s the Storm Racer since I can open up the whole chest when needed. My more traditional hard shell’s for in-town use.

A wind jacket can weigh 50 or 100 grams, which is a little addition to the rucksack for the added comfort one has is climbing in a windy environment. That's not an alternative to the rain jacket.

It is an alternative to a rain jacket if you buy it and it states that prevents water penetration.
