I'm not sure what he's done to the tape decks specifically (other than modifying them to work improperly). I've read that he modifies the tape reels on his open tape decks as well. You can see those being used live in the Ian William Craig @ Kokopelli video here on TH-cam. In that video the Boss RC 50 Loop Station he uses is visible. I really enjoy his work, and as a musician myself I am interested in knowing more about his creative process.
