Underrated as all hell. Is it the best movie ever filmed? No. Does it need to be? No. Still has drama, good situational comedy and of course it's beautifully shot. I also loved that her father wasn't this monster but a disconnected old drunk who actually kind of meant well.
I love far and away, a real throwback to Hollywood of old. As an Irishman I’m not a bit insulted by the stereotyping. Sure it’s corny and overly romantic. But it’s a lovely film as a result. What a corker it is
Yeah, sorry about the silly Irish stereo types. An old joke in the U.S. is “What’s the fastest way to wipe a smile off an Irishman’s face? Last Call!” As an Irishman you maybe unfamiliar with the phrase “last call”. It is an American phrase which means that the bar is about to close and if you want a drink you must order as quickly as possible.
One of my favorite movies. I watched it on TV and our family recorded it on a Sunday Night. It's one of my fondest memories of watching movies with my fam.
I finally watched the film straight through this morning and I have to agree with them both. At first, when I only caught sequences and maybe the end here and there, I didn't think it was worth my time for a fair, complete viewing. But I woke up early this morning waiting for the markets to open and I saw it just starting. So, I watched it and like Siskel, I kinda liked it.
He does bring it up her being Protestant. When they go to Mike Kelly’s Pub and he has to say they are brother and sister bc his people hate her people.
I love this movie especially the way Kidman and Cruise are characterized. Kidman is smart and free-spirited but she still has that obnoxious upper class attitude toward Cruise, who still shows his antipathy for wealthy people as he grows to care for Kidman.
I agree with him on that movie and the guy deserves your respect, he is one of the greatest movie critics and have had to endure a devastating operation... I often disagree with him but I don't call him an idiot for that matter... you like the movie, I didn't; what's the deal with that
this has been on HBO recently and honestly it's not that bad of a film ,it kind of starts lagging in the third act I think it's pretty solid accents aside
Their accents were atrocious, especially Cruise's. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised they didn't bring that up. Most of us Americans are very ignorant about accents. We think all Irish people sound like leprechauns, and all Australians sound like the Geico gecko, not knowing he speaks in a Cockney English accent.
( before vote sophia is mother of christ and dark lord who wants worship of him alone), Mary the rewarded woman fiction to compete with other religons. Marrianne most autneticly is first deity made flesh to bear layshual. Ashera the mother of yahweh. Worshiping god when without agency of a male is included is dumb. Still Their people would remember the lore for sake of wisdom Father Dagda and Mother Danu. Brigid and Lugh were to be worshped as children of god.
This film was good for the adventure, finding a home, interclass romance, and the scenery. Done right before titanic tried.Remember the fights are realistic . It has a real person everyday apeal, like placing yourself.
I totally disagree with them, its a fun film that Ive watched many times. As if this is the first film to have "Irish stereotypes" of that sort. Im German / Irish heritage, and I didnt find the characterizations at all "malicious" in intent like, say, the way Germans are portrayed in that piece of overrated dogshit called "Inglorious Basterds" (and just about every other film made by an American about Germans). I think it's more like a throwback to the epic 50s films like "The Quiet Man".
A great and underrated classic. I love Far and Away. I love that soundtrack too

I miss the sweeping epic 90s movies. One of my favorites.
Far and Away is a great looking romantic melodrama. And it’s great at what it is.

You basically described what it means to be Irish. That's why this movie works so well

"especially Kidman" got that right! Nicole is the most amazing actress on the planet!! ♥♥♥
She sure could pass for an Irish woman. Very beautiful

70MM shot film looked awesome....
Underrated film. I enjoyed it a lot! Good love story, music and cinematography is good too.
I definitely agree with Ebert here.
loved it youd have to be of irish blood to really appreciate the film and that i am.
Agreed.
2:45 Not much changed, Roger.
I agree with siskel

I just never believed the Tom Cruise character. It wasn't an Irishman it was Tom Cruise with a brogue. Nicole is believable somehow
I agree
Siskel made good pointers, but I agree Ebert more. Cruise & Kidman were wonderful together as they were in days of thunder.
Wow. I gave up on this movie as soon as I heard those accents.
@misswings83 You have stickers on your computer, don't you?
this has been on HBO recently and honestly it's not that bad of a film ,it kind of starts lagging in the third act I think it's pretty solid accents aside
I give the accents a pass since their performances were good. Watched this movie a lot growing up, and still enjoy it.
Siskel never disliked a Cruise movie, I don't think.
Cliff Slatterly You forgot Cocktail, he gave that one a big thumbs down.
One out of 30.
It was Ebert who HATED Cocktail just as badly as Siskel.
1:05 Nicole did a #MeToo
so ebert giving this a thumbs up or down
I think he gave it thumbs down

0:48 You get the feeling that's what Tom and Nicole's divorce sessions looked like?
Well played sir
I enjoyed its so bad its good
this film couldve redeemed itself if it wasnt for that fuckin Hollywood "JK he's ok" ending
Cruise's accent was a bit off at times
This movie came out at the wrong time. The 90s was not the right decade for this film

I'm with Ebert on this. Far and Away is a frankly awful film.
it was a bad film, way to long.
They didn't mention anything about the ending, that's what really ruined this movie for me. :(
