Thank you for sharing, I'm Indonesian and on behalf of the rest of us (with brains & hearts) I'd like to apologise for what had occurred during your stay.
We do have a new president who's more strict with the officials here, so hopefully this sort of scheme will no longer have a place in the system.
Our country is insanely beautiful, although this is the first I've heard of this, I hope it is safe for everyone too.

Hi Dan, i'm Indonesian. I am so sorry for what happened to you. i can not deny that there are some percentage of bad cops in Indonesia, but not all of it.
The drug scam motive is mainly to scare you so you give them more money, it is not likely that they will put you in jail or even death sentence for a drug that they put in your car, but it is still not okay. i will try to tell the goverment personels to check on Sumbawa's police personels.
    ..
All that aside, thank you for sharing your story.. i hope we can welcome you with a better experience next time :)

For you foreigners who are about to travel to indonesia, here's some of the road rules:
    1. The locals are always right, no need to explain what's the story on your side.
    2. The motorcycles are always right.
    3. If you hit a livestock (sheep, cow, etc or even cats, yes cats are sacred), don't stop, run away as fast as you can. Crashing into livestock is much worse than human.
    4. The road signs are not legit, the locals have their own rules about the road. One way road can become two way if they say so.

    • @Thr3eB
      @Thr3eB 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

So you and your friends didn't have any weed for the whole trip? I find this hard to believe.
      1. You ran over a local, likely ruining his life. In the story you only give this person a moment's mention.
      2. I'm 99% sure you and your surfer buddies were smoking weed left and right during your trip.
      3. You decided you and your friend were above the local laws and did not serve your sentence.
Dan you know in your heart you did wrong. You ran someone over, likely while drunk or high after partying. You had drugs in a place you shouldn't of had drugs. I understand that the laws and punishments in this place are overzealous, but the least you can do is send money regularly to the person you ran over, and you better not start a go fund me- send your own money. Got it.

  • @emeraldvirgo
    @emeraldvirgo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +40

As an Indonesian, this is really embarrassing for the country but I will not defend the people that put you through the ordeal. The road accident that you experienced is not uncommon because some motorcyclists will suddenly switch to the wrong side of the road just to get ahead of cars, and yes this causes fatal accidents. It's sad to say that in more isolated areas, the police will defend the perpetrator even if it's not your fault just because they are (more) injured. Indonesia is still rife with corruption and even tourist destinations are not free from it. Yes, Indonesians are known to be friendly, but there are also the deceptive few who will target unaware tourists.
You are brave to share your story because I hope your video will reach the people with power to take action. I'm glad that you made it out and I'm sorry that you had to experience that.

I am Indonesian and Dutch and my dad went to jail in Bali because one of his friends snitch on him for using weed but thats illegal in Indonesia and he served 11 months in jail but he did nothing wrong and yeah the corruption in Indonesia is bad! And especially if you crash in Indonesia or if you see an accident on the road or anywhere don't ever interfere with it or maybe they will blame it on you and get you in a lot of trouble

I'm an Indonesian native who's born there & moved to USA since 1999. I remember your newspaper because one of my relatives who lives in Bali showed it to me & asked me about 2 young men with blonde hair arrested for something illegal action. I didn't know this whole time it was you all along Dan so I really appreciate for telling this story. Indonesian police in general are very strict and also can be used oppression towards foreigners because of many history bad dilemma that involves with politics and democracy. You were very lucky to escaped through the police because you would of been shot if you were found & sentenced to lifetime prison. I'm glad you've escaped from the situation. I would like to talk to you someday about your story in more depth and how in that time situation was a bit more dangerous in 2009. Cheers!

Indonesian here. I know my country sucks sometimes, but your story is just mindblowing. Have you report this scam to any authority there? I mean with Casey's connection, you can probably do it easier as he had interviewed the president. Well Indonesia has very strict laws about drugs with really corrupt officers, that's a fucking disastrous combination. I'll try to notify somebody in charge about your story, it is really unfortunate for you to love surfing and not being able to come to Indonesia.

Life can go from awsome to unbelievably scary in a few seconds in Indonesia. I have had a scary scam incident in Indonesia, not as bad as this but still terrifying when you realise you are completely at the mercy of criminals who are in fact the law. I did what you did and ran at the first opportunity, cut my trip short and got on a plane out of there. Tourists are sitting ducks and are preyed on. I know another guy who had an even worse experience, similar to yours, but spent 6 months in jail, parents mortgaged thier house, he eventually escaped by bribing prison security, is now back home but far from unscathed from the ordeal. The worst part is there is very little you can do legally once targeted. You did the right thing, and anyone else who finds themselves in this position, running is about your only option if it presents itself get out of there as quickly as possible and never go back.

As an Indonesian i can make sure Jakarta nowadays is pretty good and safe, just like other developed cities, but mostly other big city may feels like a 90's london, we literally can do any crime and get away with it as long as we have money and keep a low profile, small people get oppressed by the higher ups, thugs running freely, the police actually corrupt and a part of the local thugs, by the way, this is medan I'm talking about, just be careful in any developing country.

Hey Dan, Indonesian here. Hope you feel a bit better now.
I live in Bali for 7 good years and spent most of my time working in the surf industries. So I know a thing or two about what usually happen. To be honest with you, even if they trapped you successfully, it doesn't mean you're automatically get the death penalty (god forbid). But you will eventually get into trouble dealing with those mobs.
First and foremost, the scam was a way to ask you for more money. Similar tactic happens regularly to Indonesians as well, not exclusively to foreigners (although it's safe to assume they'll get more money from foreigners). Usually they catch you then take you to ATM and force you to withdraw cash. If you resist (or if you don't have enough money as they wish), then you are in trouble.
Good to know though that you guys decide to run away, and succeed. #ACAB

Just to put another perspective out there, stories like Dan's are unfortunately quite believable and horrific to hear. I've just left Indonesia a few days ago after spending time with much family there and I always hear more and more of these kinds of scams for money that have happened. Because of the new President and his policies in place, corruption has slowly but surely been combated (i.e. whenever my family and I pass by government officials' opulent houses, family often say the officials have recently been removed for corruption). It's a sad truth that this particular underdeveloped country (not saying that with bias) still has areas that tourists (even like myself) should be on extremely high alert in all the time. Originally from the US, I've discovered that the Department of the State has labeled Indonesia as a country to "watch out for" (in paraphrased terms). For anyone reading, I still highly recommend going to Indonesia-many, many people are extremely hospitable and its culture is abundant-just be on guard for all sorts of scams and theft.
Final note: much of the laws there are poorly enforced, so if anyone ever finds themselves in a situation like that of Dan's, book it like he did and worry about the repercussions (if any) later.

Are these 2 guys above me serious? Indonesia is already a third world country, having drugs wouldn't make the country better and could lead the country to be like African countries, and I have a crazy idea, why don't people just stop bringing drugs here? Crazy right?

7 cc Hg Are you for real? Death penalty for possession of recreational use. Are you fucking disturbed? I don’t care how low rank the country has on the world index.
What if some poor student gets coerced into muling? Does he deserve life in jail or death? Fix your damn country.

+Moriarty Vivaldi I need to correct this. The death penalty is for the drug dealers and smugglers....
Not the ones who uses the drug...

Don't be ashamed! Abusers of Power are everywhere.
There's been a lot of cases where police officers put drugs in people's cars in the US too.
