The Film Room Ep 12: Christian Hackenberg 2016 NFL Draft Scouting Report

I have had a sneaking suspicion that Christian Hackenberg was going to be a hotly debated prospect ever since Penn State’s shockingly disastrous opening game against the Temple Owls in September, and so far that has proven to be true. Considering how unusual it is to see such an enormously talented (and hyped) true freshman quarterback drop off the face of the earth over his sophomore and junior seasons, I suppose it isn’t that surprising that nobody has really been able to “figure him out” yet in their projections. Some people (like myself) see him as a surefire first rounder, while others would be reluctant to touch him until the third day of the draft.
Opinions on Hackenberg are as volatile as his stat lines, but at the end of the day perhaps only one opinion in the entire world really matters when it comes to where he will be drafted - Bill O’Brien. Hackenberg stayed fiercely loyal to O’Brien despite all of the turmoil surrounding the Penn State program during his recruiting process, and I suspect that loyalty is about to repaid with interest.
Hackenberg to the Texans in the first round. Book it.

I think you out-thought yourself here. [Paraphrased from the start] "Sure he's horrifically inaccurate, but..." *actually* there is no "but" after that statement. This guy is like Fedex; you have two choices for his mail, air or ground.

This is one of the best videos I have seen on a prospect. Hackenberg is a bonafide NFL caliber QB. So much misplaced criticism. The fact that Brett is not a Penn State fan, alumni, or beat writer makes this video even better. Goes to show what some of the most knowledgable PSU football supporters realized over the past few years. SOMEONE FINALLY GETS IT.

You were hardly the only pundit to miss badly on Hackenberg - obviously the Jets scouting team did as well. What I don't get is how/why the experts repeatedly ignored what was painfully obvious to even the most casual fan.
    Accurate? : Nope
    Mobile? : Nope
    Makes plays? : Nope
I get what what you are saying about NFL-level knowledge but how could that ever compensate for everything else?
It's like everyone tried to show us idiot fans how smart they are.
I can't imagine how the collective jaws of the Jets coaching staff dropped when they realized what they had.

Excellent breakdown. Your draft position was slightly off, but the negative training camp stuff is out of control. He's got some work to do, but it's a tough game and a tougher league to play in. The Jets seem to be playing it right, similar to what they are doing with Petty. Now they have two young QB prospects that could eventually pay off big.

Happy my Jets got him without giving a King's ransom. Macc had to of talked to O'Brien with their days together with the Texans to know this was a slam dunk. Great work man.

That means O-line and safety positions. Those are ones you lack on your resume. I'm convinced you can find a lot of intriguing prospects out there (Tunsil, Stanley, Conklin is very interesting; safety - Karl Joseph!)

Hey Brett, thanks for doing all these videos on the publics behalf. Love them, and would love to know how to best support you going forward!
I was also wondering if you had taken a look at the top Rush OLB in this year's class and how they rank yet. I'm a huge Cardinals fan, and assuming we get Center help and D-Line help for Calais in the offseason, I'm expecting us to spend multiple picks, maybe even double dipping on OLB this year (though I wouldn't mind if Hackenburg ended up in our lap after watching this video). Thanks for your insight!

    • @BrettKollmann
      @BrettKollmann  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

+Austin Christian Moore I'm still working on charting all the edge guys for now, but there are a lot to like. Unfortunately for Arizona there aren't a ton of true 3-4 OLB prospects this season. It's pretty heavy on D-linemen, linebackers, and corners though. They might have to stick with Okafor for one more season or throw every last dollar they have at Von Miller.

Just now discovered this video. Very informative. Came away with a completely different opinion of Hack and would love for the Bills to snag him. Is the 19th pick too soon though?
Does make we wonder who was behind the Osweiler signing. If O'Brian had any input, you'd think they wouldn't have gone through with that signing and grabbed Hack in the draft. I suppose it is the GM who has final say but would have loved to be fly on the wall during their discussions.

Most NFL QBs are hitting hands on 75-85% of their passes. Hack is right in there.

Are you doing the top qbs drafted every year? In other words, Goff, Wentz, Lynch and Cook's, too? You do a hell of a job of analyzing the top qb prospects entering the draft and I was wondering if you're going to continue this.

+Brett Kollmann I'm a big fan of your videos. If you don't mind, what did you read and study specifically to gain your football knowledge? I'd like to learn the actual game. Also, is Jaylon Smith or Myles Jack the better player(and is Smith's video coming after the draft)? After the draft, can you do a video on Owa Odighizuwa's college film(He was injured for most of the season and I know you had him as your top edge defender last year)?

JETS BABY! SIT A YEAR AND BECOME THE FRANCHISE QB!
Or come in on day one and take the starting job like Russell Wilson. Either works.
