Feeling these games, Solo-- I appreciate the objective analysis win, lose, or draw. You have quite the knack when it comes to explaining moves and strategy. Kudos.
Thank you brotha! Ya it will be interesting to see if the Hippo explodes in popularity or if it will always be that opening which is barely known but packs a punch just as hard as anything else out there. Keep it up!
Greetings from Guatemala. Love these Hippo videos. Keep this up and some day every Hippo player in the world will be subscribing to your channel. With so many chess channels out there, you need a specialty, so why not make your specialty be the Hippo.
Hey Allan! Yep that is what I'm going for! I think at the moment I have around 17 Hippo videos and would like to get up to 50 eventually. Thanks for supporting brotha I really appreciate it.
The Hippo strikes again! A very nice Hippo win, which shows how aggressive the Hippo can be if the opponent makes a slight mistake. At 5:35, you mentioned the move f5 for white. I think white would be slightly better, although it is very complicated.
YUP! And ya totally, far from winning for white if f5 is played, in fact I think the computer has it around even. But, in any case, the Hippo is easy to set up and a force to be reckoned with!
Yay! Glad to see you win again, especially with the good ol' Hippo. And thanks for the analysis too, it's nice to see what high level players are doing against the Hippo. I'd still watch if you played other openings, but if you played the Hippo all tournament, I won't complain :D
Hey Johny! Thank you brotha, glad you enjoyed the analysis. Also spoiler alert: in all 6 games I played the Hippo. That's really all I plan to play going forward in OTB chess too :)
I like the system openings. I like the Hippo as black and the collie as white. both of these openings give players options. I like how in the Hippo you could either go for a mating attack or simplify into an endgame. My style is more strategic so I like to play endgames, I like to trade early and when I play online it easy for me to do that in the Hippo and the collie openings. If I see a chance to win material or weave a mating pattern I will take it but generally look for endgame starting from move one. Your videos are helpful thanks.
Hey Jack! These are some great thoughts, I am also a big fan of system openings. Can use creativity and knowledge opposed to just memorization. Glad you liked the video and let me know what else I can make to help. Keep it up!!
I play Hyppo almoust 12 years in tournament chess with very good result.Hippo is universal way to try win with black. You can try 1.b62.Lb7 with hippo idea,or 1.g62.Lg7 with hippo idea. But you can try my idea(Ultra modern Hippo):1.e6,2.Se73.d64.Sd75.a6 6.b5(b6)7.c58.Lb7,without g6,Lg7,Se7-Sg6 idea,Le7,0-0,or g6,Lg7 if you must. The key idea is pawn c5,with d6,e6 pawn. The key idea in Hyppo is atack with c5 or f5,opening bishop,on b7 or g7.Great video. We love Hippo.I have almoust 250 Hippo games with black(tornament live chess+internet speed chess). The good books is Hillarp Person-Modern defense,The Hippopotamus rises:A.Martin,The Hippopotamus defence:A.D.Santis
I wish I could understand your notation to see what your ideas are, especially to see what a ultra modern Hippo is, but I still have a hard enough time with that other notation we see nowdays. But thanks for that book list, I will definitely check out the others I have not read.
I have a question, Hippo is a really hard opening to play against, but I find key ideas in the hippo to be hard to learn. Can you recommend any easy / fasy ways to learn how to play in certain openings?
I would say the Hippo is very easy to setup but after move 10 can become complicated. Maybe go for "simple" opening like the Italian Game for white or Black Lion's Defense for black? These are just a couple options, but they both have pretty simple concepts. What is your current repertoire?
Delicious win, Solomon! I like the idea of keeping the K in the center, then castle the opposite side AFTER W has committed itself. It's more of a Bull "'Ole" defense.)
@@TheChessGiant Thank you Solomon. Experimenting with only playing the hippo as black. But sticking to the English as white, as my white hippo didn't go as well! I will buy your course soon, but more black hippo videos please 😀😀
Yes, Daniel Naroditsky has about 3 videos on his YT versus the Hippo setup-- he seems to have a great understanding of how to combat it effectively. Would love to see your thoughts!!
g6 Bg7 move order also has the virtue of keeping them guessing. Are you playing a Modern? a Pirc? Especially with quick time controls, every minute helps.
Another great game and loving the analysis. Like you say, why complicate things when you don't have to. there might be a fancy complicated way of winning in 10 moves but if there's a simple certain way of winning in 20 moves, I'd choose that every time.
I feel so lucky my library had "The Hippopotamus Defense" by Alessio De Santis, made in 2019. I learned a lot from that book as a beginner, and it's the main influence to my Hippo. I'm thinking of buying it, even after I read most of it while barrowing it.
Another comment by someone who has been playing the Hippo for 12 years recommended the books: Hillarp Person-Modern defense,The Hippopotamus rises:A.Martin,The Hippopotamus defence:A.D.Santis
Ya there's not many out and it seems like Johny has helped you out. I am thinking about writting one myself but we shall see. Gonna focus on making TH-cam content on it first. And really I am still learning.
Great game; first, escaping King to the Queenside & then exploiting white’s mistakes. Wonder how Black should precede if white immediately chops off the black knight as soon as it arrives on b6, deflecting black’s c pawn to b6 (half) opening the c file, but keeping the d-file closed. Even then black has an advantage because white wasted a lot of time pushing pawns, which ironically led to open lines for Black, rather than white!
@@TheChessGiant If this is serious and I dont understand sarcasm: No, they have to provide the boards and most tournaments are only for around 200 people cause the dont have more boards...
@@billi9230 Your response is very understandable as I was being sarcastic but also genuinly curious. (Is that even possible). But wow, I had no idea that's how they did it. That's different than here! They don't give you nothin! (Most of the time)

Learning the hippo right now and really appreciate the videos you're putting out. I selfishly hope they don't get too popular :D

@@TheChessGiant I play queen's gambit, 1e4 e5. I don't know what are the plans in the middle game for the hippo, and I would like to learn it
@@yesyes300 Hey Marcel, I will keep these ideas in mind for a future video thanks! A Hippo vid on only middlegame plans would be interesting and fun.
@@TheChessGiant I support this idea. Middle game ideas that depend on key features of the setup faced by the hippo player.
I beat my english teacher with the Hippo, im so happy!! I finally broke 1000 too!! thank you sm for you videos bro
NICE!!! Congrats! Keep it up my friend. And of course man glad to help.
I agree with your G3 start, it doubles as camouflage for the modern defense allowing you to better setup the mighty hippo.
Yessir! Seems like a Modern and then boom the Hippo comes out of left field.
Good content mate

Great game. 👏I wonder why the hippo isn't more popular on GM level.
