    Do you know where I can purchase the sticky paper that goes atop and bottom to the batteries?

    This is a usefull video, however i must point out some details mentioned that are incorrect.
    the drill "power" is defined by the voltage of the battery. the reason the 2.2 amp hour battery is better is because it holds the same voltage (usually 12 volts) for a longer period than the 1.5 amp hour battery.
    the definition is rather simple as the drill has a constant current consumption (say 500miliamps per hour for sake of the argument) your 1.5Ah battery will last for 3 hours before the voltage drops below 12V rendering the drill slow, or stopping it completely (depending on how the ciscuit of the drill works)
    with a 2.2amp hour battery, your drill will last for over 4 hours before the voltage drops.
    usually the issue with the NiCad batteries is the fact that they have memory of the recharge cicle, which tends to make them drop voltage sooner, giving them an effective capacity that gets lower and lower the more you use them.
    in order to make NiCad batteries last longer the common approach is to ensure a full discharge before recharing, as this will avoid the memory effect.
    NiMH batteries are considered better because they do not suffer from this memory effect.
    it is worth noting that the reason drill companies tend to use NiCad batteries in the battery packs is not entirely because these are cheaper. it is also because NiCad batteries cope better sudden high current drain, unlike NiMH.
    It is possible to restor a NiCad battery to hold almoust as much capacity as it had when it was new, this requires a sequence of complete discharge, and very slow charge cicles many times in succession.
    although i have heard rumors, that after restoring a NiCad battery, it tends to "gain" memory a lot faster than when it was new.
    hope this information is helpful to someone.

    wow, i wish i would have known about this rebuild before throwing away my old craftsman set away, ..I west back to sears to see if they had a new battery, and the sales rep tells me they don't make the battery anymore…this was 7 yrs ago, i sense bought a Porta Cable 18 volt, still going strong, and loses don't sell the 18 volts anymore, they since upgraded it to 20 volts..

    I'm rebuilding a snapon battery pack and one of the connections has 2 batteries facing positive side up but have a connector running from one of the positive down in-between the batteries to the negative. once i had completed the connection joined them together and somehow created a short and almost melted the battery down. any tips?

    If I am not mistaken it is better to start soldering the bottom side of the bat teries according to the map, later on fix it in the box and then continue soldering the top side , that way it will be more secure handling the batteries.

    I have several old somewhat battered Ryobi 18v power packs and thanks to thieves I am going to have to try to refurbish the ones I have left. I came across your great videos found some new batteries with a rating of 3200-3500 mah and wondered if you knew what was the maximum mah rating that the P118 or P117 can manage? I would assume the higher mah would give me longer life in these packs. Do you know the tolerances or where I might find that information? I wanted to check before I bought a bunch of batteries and started testing them out. Your opinion is greatly appreciated.

    Sixtyfivefold has a good video on how to do this. I think the reason they don't rebuild the lithium packs is because lithium batteries have to be charged to a certain voltage and no more because they'll explode. Great video dw6. Does your charger for your drills drain the batteries before it charges them?

    • @doublewide6
      @doublewide6  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Love2boat92 I saw sixtyfivefords video and it was very helpful. I always enjoy his videos. My charger does not drain down the batteries.

      Oh ok. Thanks for the reply!

    • @kosh142
      @kosh142 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ Love2boat92, the main reason lithium packs may explode on (possible overcharging) is that they are essentially capacitors. Capacitors are charged to their max and released as per their design, so keeping an input to them beyond their max is dangerous.
      IF however yo know their max voltage and capacitance, you can calculate the time required. but i wouldnt rcommend it.

    • @Lanninglongarmmowing
      @Lanninglongarmmowing 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      kosh142 I've never heard it put that way but it does make sense. Chances are I would charge the batteries to long and they would explode.

    I replaced the batteries with 2200Mah batteries from the originals that were 1200Mah. After 24 hours of charging, I am only getting 10.73 volts for a battery that should be at 18 volts. Any ideas?

    You have done a great job ,,,,,,I have all ryobi lithium now some of my early ones died because I moved nearl 3 years ago and may have stored them flat,,,you can buy a charger and and lithium or buy a kit with a new drill etc ....you don’t need buy genuine ryobi batteries I use FLAG POWER now they seam ok in uk a 5ah battery is £25 ish ,your tools will then be like they are on steroids..ps stuff looks cheaper over the pond ... happy soldering

  • @buixote
    @buixote 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your charger is going to charge, based on *voltage*, not battery capacity, so you should be able to use larger capacity cells... it will take *longer* to charge, obviously, but... Thanks for the video!

  • @95tt
    @95tt 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Changing from 1500mah batteries to 2200mah batteries does not make your powertool stronger, it increases your runtime, just to clear that out. Upping the voltage makes it stronger, if your motor can handle it :) power is just like hydraulics, upping voltage or pressure equals strength, flow and current equals speed/runtime, only difference is for power current is runtime for hydraulic it is speed, hope that explains it 😃

    Cool video, but you cant make a motor stronger, without increasing the volt. The motor will Draw the amps that it needs. When a cell tells 2200mah, it actually tells you have much amp it has in it. . . If the drill runs hard, it simply draws more of the amp.

    Tenergy is a great battery manufacturer - Lithium can be rebuilt as well depending on the drill - like the Milwaukee 12 volt all that has are 3 18650 IMR batteries - each 18650 battery has a nominal voltage of 3.7 with a fresh off the charger of 4.2 volts - not all Lithium packs are going to be 18650 IMR's some may be Lithium Polymer that those are like what is found in a cell phone or Remote Control Car each of those cells are also 3.7 volts - the only problem with buying Lithium cells is there are tons of fakes and the only place that has a wide selection of authentic batteries that i know of and can trust is RTDVapor.com - yes they are an electronic cigarette vendor but they sell authentic cells with high AMP limits - for instance AW IMR has a 10 amp continuous - the only thing you have to take into consideration with IMR cells or any Lithium cell is they can not be taken below 3.3 volts or you ruin the cell. So each battery pack will have a chipset inside that monitors the voltage as does it monitor the battery temp - lithium are a little bit more delicate and like to be kept at temps humans do - so the cold will drain a battery very easy - those should be stored in a heated space - the reason I suggested RTDVapor.com is because they normally have the batteries in stock and are a trusted US Vendor - I use the cells for my Ecig - so the brands that are the best quality would be AW, Efest, Sony, Panasonic and Orbtronic - Fluidvapor sells Orbtronic or you can go directly to Orbtronic.com

    The lithium-ion batteries has different charging characteristics than the nickel-cadmium batteries. If you put a li-ion into a ni-cd loader the battery can explode. There are ways to modify the charger, but it's much more easy to use new ni-cd cells.
