    Hey Nick:
    Very nice video, but if I may: you are describing the IDEAL installation, the one with no issues. For example, remind people they need to be PLUGGED IN to a modem/router. The installation will not work through WiFi. People must know they will NOT get a Graphic User Interface at the end (GUI). You said BEGINNERS guide. All they will get (which you show) at the end, is a command driven prompt.
    Overall, a very helpful video, but you need to remember: beginners. We are 20 years behind you. :-)

    • @SavvyNik
      @SavvyNik  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Haha yeah some of this would help. I was aiming more towards people/beginners who wanted to setup a server and figured they would expect no GUI and only a command line interface. The wifi mention is a good one. I didn't realize this since I'm always plugged in when doing these installs. I think it might be more necessary to make a video comparing and contrasting the differences between the different setups (desktop vs server). I'll add that to the list.

      so this explains why my IP link returns a website not reached? My cpu is connected via wifi - and my IP looks kind of funny. 127.00.0.1

    I did this with VirtualBox 6.1 following all the steps in this video. I could not look up the website on my host computer. The solution for this was to Go to 'Machine Settings -> Network' and changed attached to from "NAT -> Bridged Adapter". I restarted the virtual machine was greeted with a message indicating that the IP address was changed. Now I can log in from my network.

      Thanks for the kind remarks, smashing like, and subbing!! Means a lot! That's a cool project. Yeah it would be sufficient since the server addition is very minimal. Ubuntu has special versions for the Pi - ubuntu.com/download/raspberry-pi check that page out if you're looking for an imagine (since it runs with an Arm processor). I would imagine the install is about the same, but haven't tried it on there quite yet. Let me know how it goes.

    Thanks for the tutorial!
    I have a few questions:
    -Does it need to be connected to the router via ethernet or is wifi also going to work?
    -Would it work with the laptop lid closed?
    -Can Mac and Windows computers both access the drive for read and write on the server? I wanted to do some file transfers.
    Thanks!

    • @SavvyNik
      @SavvyNik  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You're welcome.
      1) Ethernet should be your first line of use, but I believe there is an option to setup a wifi connection
      2) Most likely depends how your laptop handles the sleep function, but typically this is done by the operating system and I don't believe there's anything installed to allow it to sleep
      3) You can use both mac and windows computers if you use something called samba share server. This allows connections from both device types and creates a storage server that you can access over a network.

      Jay, thanks for the kind remarks. Make sure to smash that like button on the video for me if you haven't already. As far as no ssd/hdd you can install Linux on a persistent USB drive. I'm sure you can find some examples online, but if you wanted there are a few Linux distros that can actually be ran on Physical Memory instead of storage. They're super quick, but I don't think Ubuntu has that possibility.

      if you installed and then tried setting up your network as long as you chose DHCP as the option to run your network it should be picking up an ip from your router. Otherwise something in the settings is wrong, adapter isn't working, or you don't have a good connection back to your router. You'll have to do some network troubleshooting. Look up a command called "ip a" that should get you started.

    do you undertsand how important is to setup the static ip at the moment of installation?
    what you just did was leaving a dynamic ip that will change every time you boot the machine so you just said: screw port forwarding... this means you skipped the most important part
    and the most confusing too
    the numbers that ubuntu uses for that exact configuration does not work right away
    also it renames stuff that dont need to such as */24 at the end fo the ip???
    subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0 but you try it and then wont work
    address should be 192.168.1.x but it wont work
    gateway should be 192.168.1.1 but it does not work
    wtf are name servers? is that the dns part? 8.8.8.8
    wtf are search domains?
    im telling because all of this WORK in ubuntu desktop or any windows pc
    that interface is useless that's why I'm so desperate to find a tutorial that covers this exact part
    because doing it manually after installing everything will make the server crash right away
    so forget about cockpit, ssh or whatever you need to connect to...
    so netstat and the bs config files wont work bc ubuntu installs a lot of crap even if you tell them to not
    all of this happens, at least if you do this inside a vm with bridge network adapter
    because you just want apache and using freakin xammp servers glitches php files at testing

    • @SavvyNik
      @SavvyNik  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use netplan to setup a static ip. When someone is first setting things up it's not necessary. You can manually edit or set to dhcp depending on your network, but you can always edit after the fact. This is not a networking tutorial lol
