      If you log in to your routers gateway, you can use your smartphone to scan the airwaves for wifi "channels" go into your router and assign your router to operate your SSID on a unused channel and the signals won't clash or interfere. you'll get speed better than physical cable can carry electrons.

    Who would win? $500 Wi-Fi Router? Or $5 Ethernet cable?
    Also if neither Wi-Fi nor running an ethernet cable are options, there are two other options. One is "MOCA" (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) which lets you send an ethernet/internet signal across coax cable. This is convenient because many older homes might not have ethernet, but almost every house has coax. It can even work at the exact same time as it's being used for TV apparently.
    Another is "powerline" where it basically runs a data signal through your power circuit. As in, you take one of the two modules and plug it into an AC outlet near your router and plug an ethernet cable into it from your router, and then take another module and plug it near your computer, and connect an ethernet from there. Though this is hit-or-miss in terms of speed depending on whether the modules are on the same circuit, and how far away.

      It is amazing that the cable will win every time.

      Same. I’m glad that this wasn’t promoting some fake device. I also appreciated the walkie-talkie reference since that is also what I use when describing wireless to people. Another advantage with a wired connection is that it offers full duplex as opposed to half duplex which is what most wireless routers/access points operate in. This can also described using walkie-talkies as listening (receive) or speaking (transmit) but not both at the same time.

    Helpful tip: when you strip the cheating off cat 5/6 cable, use the cut string a couple inches past that. That will ensure there is no damage from cutting the outer sheath, on the individual wire insulation. Hope this helps someone and makes sense, but you can have interference if those end up bare and could touch eachother. Coming from doing data work as well as residential electrician, I have seen it first hand. Another good video!

    As an IT guy, I became CWNA (Certified Wireless Network Admin). What I learned from the course is that wireless sucks ass unless you NEED it to be wireless. If you can plug it in, that is ALWAYS the better option. Ever had a temporary loss of call between 2 landlines? I moved into my current house 20 years ago and one of the first things I did was run 2 Cat5 cables to every room. 1 for Internet and the other for phone (landlines were a think 20 years ago. Internet went back to a patch panel and the Phone to a 66 block, so If I needed to add a bunch more phone lines, I just needed a phone system. It was a bit of overkill wiring my house like an office building, but Yeah.. I went there...

    IT guy here, there's a reason all tech guys have cat6 networks throughout their house. Cabled connection will always outperform wireless ones.
    Also, you most likely don't need 1gbps. I just downgraded my 300mbps to 100mbps and I still strean 4k no problem.
    It's still just as fast (latency) as it was.
    The inly difference is that I have to wait longer if I download a new game on steam.

    You actually want to strip a bit of insulation and then use some of that fiberglass cord that is in it to pull down on the sleeve to expose more. Many times when you are exposing the individual wires you can inadvertently cut through part of one or more of the wires which can cause you to have issues later. By pulling on that cord, you cut and expose fresh parts without needing a sharp implement.

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That is a great tip and as you said safer to not nick any wires

    • @mskurnik
      @mskurnik 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alternatively you can use one of those plastic letter openers or something similar to slice the sleeve as some CAT cables have a plastic X insert instead of the fiberglass.

  • @dtierney

    Another option for folks who don't want to run cables, setup keystones, etc. is to use a MoCA. This is assuming coax is ran to the desired rooms. Few items to mention: the ez rj45 connectors (shown in the video) are nice because you don't have to struggle with getting your wires cut to length but the crimp tool's blade will dull, causing the ends to short. It's also a good idea to have a tester if you plan on making your own cables.

    another tip for your wireless, Wifi 6 can handle more multiple devices at once. 2.4ghz is for range, 5ghz is for speed. Most good wifi routers will have (1) 2.4 and (2) 5ghz connections. Split them up. Put your appliances on 2.4, put your streaming devices on 5 and put your gaming stuff on the other 5

    Lots of great _practical_ information to get up and running with wired Ethernet. But IMHO the implication that wifi would be just as fast if only there weren't any contention, is just plain wrong. For household wifi, even under the best conditions, it's just never going to be as fast as wired Ethernet can be (assuming same-vintage equipment, e.g. 1 Gbps Ethernet, never mind 10 Gbps, compared to the latest wifi).

    I've gotten lots of great ideas from CS, but I think this was a swing and a miss. I replaced the CAT5e cable between my brand new cable modem and my brand new router with a CAT6 cable and the speed on all my devices DROPPED to half their previous speeds. I put the original cable back and the speeds went back up. I was getting some lag in my TV picture so I installed a CAT6 cable (not the same one) instead of using wi-fi and once again the speed test showed one half the original speed. Exactly the opposite of what should have occurred.

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you were already cabled, switching to a higher rated cable should have no effect. However you mentioned a TV, oddly enough many TVs only have a 100meg port ethernet jack, unlike almost every computer that would have 1000meg capable. So you may have made the TV work slower with that port. But many tvs will use an adapter like the one showed and will then support 1000meg (gig) and that should increase the performance. The video was really geared for computers but this may help you with your TV. You need to check online as to what adapters are supported by yoru TV.
