Mock O levels in a heatwave. Dreaming of our future with the radio on. I'm 60 now, and still listening. The 70s were such a special time to grow up in. Xxx
@@carolineelkington407 have you forgotten the wallpaper? Every place looked like the Overlook Hotel. Lol. But, yes, it was our time. Joe, London, 60 in July
A talented songwriter with a terrific voice. Great song that brings back memories of a party in Surrey, England. Now I live in Brisbane, Australia, very happy not to be living in England.
Such a beautiful song, with heartfelt lyrics and such a simple melody behind it. The feelings are equally there. I studied Matrimonial Law; and so many relations live and die in the way this song describes, where infatuation becomes rejection. One party takes control and the other realises they have been used, and leaves. In this case the downtown, downbeat guy; and the uptown up-tempo woman not even realising that she had been leading the man on and treating him with contempt. Of course, as I found when reading law, and also through personal and professional experiences, the scenario works both ways. Rejection is never easy when in a relationship, particularly when it takes a time for it to dawn on the "used" party that actually they have been taken for granted and used. Having seen so many situations like this, it probably accounts for the reason why I stayed single. Once your heart has been broken in such a cruel way, it is difficult, if not impossible to repair. It took me ages to find a copy of this on vinyl although I heard it frequently on overseas radio-stations in the 1970s (Radio Luxembourg, Hilversum Radio). I still play it from time to time to remember the girl I truly loved, but never told; and for Patsy to realise that actually I really did love her. She was equally shocked when I did tell her and indeed wrote to me and asked "why?" Perhaps I was the down town, down beat guy, who couldn't hold a job down for health reasons and she was the Uptown, albeit shy woman; who turned out to be not as shy as I had thought. Heartbreaks are always difficult, and this song underlines it in such a simple way.
Doesn't remind me of what C&C reminds me of but still reminds me of the year of 1976. Came out in the summer of the year while Concrete came out in spring.
I came across your great play list, as I was trying to find out who wrote 'You'. By the Carpenters. and now I know. I perform as KC in a live theatre show, and sing this and am baffled as to the story behind the song. I know the others he has done, Bril set list :) Toni Lee aka The Voice of Karen Carpenter :) x
The two songs' Taxi "and' Uptown Uptempo Woman" just seem alot alike to me The 60's had great music too even the 80's however the 70's i guess it was just my time " "But Come Monday it will be all right come Monday I'll be holding you tight i spent 4 lonely days in brown LA. HAZE AND I JUST WANT YOU BACK BY MY SIDE" JIMMY BUFFETT from the summer of 1970 i think
It started out in innocence The way that most things do A thousand people crammed in one place But the only face was you I grabbed your hand and we raced out Hardly said a word I'd only seen you for a minute But I was round in third And we traded on our backgrounds You mentioned I seemed shy Then you laughed and said "I'm an uptown, uptempo woman "You're a downtown, downbeat guy" Within a week I'd moved in, At her uptown, east side place We'd make love for hours on a bed of silk and lace She would get up early Come home late at night She had important business But my prospects all seemed slight Tired on some evenings She'd get mad and cry "I'm an uptown, uptempo woman, "You're a downtown, downbeat guy" Well the romance soon was over The lust was turning thin And I soon began to realise The mess I'd gotten in But as always happens You're caught in such a trap You get so used to what's around That you can't find your way back So I lived with this arrangement And soon learned to despise The uptown, uptempo woman And the downtown, downbeat guy Then one Saturday in March I decided I would go As I was going nowhere And my mind was getting slow So I opened all the closets There wasn't much to pack I felt bad not telling her that I wasn't coming back But this day she was early she looked at me and asked why? I said why? "You're an uptown, uptempo woman, "And I'm a downtown, downbeat guy" You're an uptown, uptempo woman I'm a downtown, downbeat guy Downtown, downbeat guy
Absolutely beautiful, I have terminal cancer, makes me think about life 😢

So true, from a song writing stance, you could have pitched this song to a popular artist in any era from 1945-2022 and it would be a hit.

delightful
Randy seldom sang his own created songs , only this one he really showed off
never played enough over here
It started out in innocence
The way that most things do
A thousand people crammed in one place
But the only face was you
I grabbed your hand and we raced out
Hardly said a word
I'd only seen you for a minute
But I was round in third
And we traded on our backgrounds
You mentioned I seemed shy
Then you laughed
and said "I'm an uptown, uptempo woman
"You're a downtown, downbeat guy"
Within a week I'd moved in,
At her uptown, east side place
We'd make love for hours
on a bed of silk and lace
She would get up early
Come home late at night
She had important business
But my prospects all seemed slight
Tired on some evenings
She'd get mad and cry
"I'm an uptown, uptempo woman,
"You're a downtown, downbeat guy"
Well the romance soon was over
The lust was turning thin
And I soon began to realise
The mess I'd gotten in
But as always happens
You're caught in such a trap
You get so used to what's around
That you can't find your way back
So I lived with this arrangement
And soon learned to despise
The uptown, uptempo woman
And the downtown, downbeat guy
Then one Saturday in March
I decided I would go
As I was going nowhere
And my mind was getting slow
So I opened all the closets
There wasn't much to pack
I felt bad not telling her
that I wasn't coming back
But this day she was early
she looked at me and asked why?
I said why?
"You're an uptown, uptempo woman,
"And I'm a downtown, downbeat guy"
You're an uptown, uptempo woman
I'm a downtown, downbeat guy
Downtown, downbeat guy
We've all been there.
Why does he sing You're an uptown up to going when the song is called uptown Tempo womam

I felt like the song was reading my mail
Takes me back to my worst year ever.
Does any one know what year this was in the charts in the UK ?
