The seventies equivalent of Mozart, the lyrical genius of a Shakespeare, and the humbleness of a good soul! Thank you for such a gift of a song to humanity
10 times the talent of Elton, I wish he were not scammed by his label and had made/published music throughout that period passionately, a great loss. now there is a before and after in the music and enthusiasm. Still a huge contribution to the world of music, I hope my kids' 5 generations from now will enjoy this as much as I do,
I think the very young Elton John was so much better a songwriter than he is now! Living in the US seems to have made his songs overblown and not stripped back sadly!
I agree. I was at Music College in the early 70s when these songs burst onto the scene. Gilbert & Elton were deemed “rubbish” by my tutors as their music (like the Beatles before them) didn’t conform to musical theory. I could have actually written thousands of songs like these, and better, but wasn’t allowed to. Frustrated at this I left College to find my own way but thereby hangs another tale......... anyway these “musicians” were still scorned by the tutors and, in a way, they were right. We had to literally “write” parts, as in 26 instrument scores and voice, four part harmony and piano pieces all of which had to conform to the theory of music whereas Gilbert & Elton went on to make their millions (although Gilbert was ripped off by his manager, and struggled forever thereafter), and Elton triumphed above all the “writers” you can ever imagine. If I had been a “chord merchant” like EJ then I would’ve been thrown out of College. The only true musician on the scene at the time in this genre for the UK was Peter Skellern. But because of the route he chose he never got the exposure he deserved. He died penniless.
Grenville Bamford - Bernie Taupin does not write / compose music. Elton John does. Up until now I've never heard (or read) anyone say otherwise, or even hint otherwise. Feel free to share links with interviews or posts (reliable sources, obviously). In the good old days he, as Reg (sometimes Reggie) Dwight - his real name is Reginald Kenneth Dwight), wrote the music and lyrics to "Come Back Baby" and "Mr. Frantic" when he was with Bluesology
@Grenville Bamford Elton doesn’t do arrangements, nor is he “a writer” He’s a piano player. The musicians were the likes of Paul Buckmaster, Gus Dugeon, etc.

Going to see Gilbert in Cork next Wednesday - pure genius and definitely not under appreciated. Any artist who spent seven weeks at no.1 in the States with "Alone again" has hardly not got recognition. He was a global star in the '70s. Unfortunately he had a long running legal battle with his first manager Gordon Mills to regain the royaltys from his original songs. This precluded him from releasing new material for years. Thankfully he won his case so now he has so many more beautiful songs out there. Gilbert is appearing in his native Waterford in Ireland shortly before Christmas. His concerts were sold out in seconds so I'm delighted I'm going to get to see him in Cork. Thanksfor everything Raymond from a fellow Deise lad.

He's a master of poetic form, adhering to rhyme scheme, etc., and finding concise ways to express his thoughts, but, his lyrics are anything but simplistic. They're actually very profound.
I was just thinking the same. His lyrics are hardly ever simplistic but has well thought out, often intricated and always profound. He can master all kinds of themes as well, ranging from sad to upbeat, serious to humourous.
@@thomasmarthinussen8978 To think that his first hits were written in his teens boggles the mind, especially in stark contrast to what's on the charts these days.

He sure did but Paul obviously haven't kept up with the Gilbert OSullivan output! He revealed some embarrassing fundamental flaws in a Gilbert OSullivan mini documentary and view Gilbert as the most missing in action artist of his adulthood! Love Gilberts little bass finger. Over thirty years since I first caught you live. I’ve lost count of the amount of time my wife and I seen you here in Dublin. You’ve never lost it ,Ray. Stay blessed.
I remember this song when it was first released in the early 70’s , at the time I thought it was slow and boring , but hearing it again now I’m a lot older , I think it’s a masterpiece of songwriting , the words and lyrics are a superb combination along with the actual tune . An excellently written song of that time seen through the eyes of one of the most underrated talents.
I’ve never ever thought of it as slow and boring, I’ve always liked it and I wasn’t born until 9 years later… It was my Mum got the 7” 45 and I always played it together with ‘Clair’ and ‘Alone Again (Naturally)’ (1972)
Next to "Alone Again Naturally" this is one of Gilbert's most beautiful songs....the music, combined with his voice and lyrics are perfection....LOVE THIS always ~
I saw Gilbert in 2019 at a little theatre in Babacombe near Torquay, it was just him and a guitarist. He was brilliant, still as crisp as ever. When this hell is over and we hopefully return to some sort of normality, I would really recommend seeing him, you won’t be disappointed.😊👍
Oh man, I've seen Gilbert 6 times in concert between 1997 and 2014 but I sadly didn't catch any of his low key intimate solo shoes with just piano and guitar in the last five years. Gilbert is coming to Oslo, Norway in October 2021 and Hopefully the corona madness will be over by then but Im not sure. He's my all time favourite pop artist. Poignant, poetic, and such a beautiful melody, always loved this song. For some reason, he never got the recognition he deserved.
Not only a great lyric, but the musicality is stunning. The harmonic progression is phenomenal. Always rated this as his best song, and it still sounds as fresh 50 years later.
The seventies equivalent of Mozart, the lyrical genius of a Shakespeare, and the humbleness of a good soul! Thank you for such a gift of a song to humanity
🤣
well said
agreed a genius
Thank you for you beautiful comments...it gave me peace x
Wonderful comment. Gilbert is certainly a genius, i love his music.
Of all his songs this and Alone Again are in a class of their own. In any company they are in a class of their own.
Totally agree.
@@123seanaway Me too.
Yes, they are both truly extraordinary songs, and strangely nothing else he wrote came close.
@@annasumicz9702 get your facts right, Elton never wrote his songs Berni Taupin did Elton does the arrangement way better than Gilbert also imo
Some singers and there music songs never ever age and Gilbert o Sullivan is one music is as relevant in 2023
As was in 1973 yeah its timeless 🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰
Saw him last winter in Scotland. He was outstanding..and what a lovely man!❤
I am 74, the artist is two years older and l have just discovered this song. Wonderful!
Where you been the past 50 years Tessa ?
i haven't listened to this song for a long long time. I can remember when this was released i was a teenager , it's still as powerful now some 50 years later ....... I'm just so proud I loved this guy's music, perhaps i was a good person after all........... i pray this is true
Irish talent at it’s best. A brilliant composer and lyricist. Underrated as so many in history where things did not rhyme.
John Lennon described this as the best song ever written..

Sir Gilbert O'Sullivan is pure genius!!!
one of the most beautiful songs in the world, ever made!
One of the most unique songwriting talents ever. With simplistic lyrics that everyone can relate to.
It takes a genius to make something simple.
@@johnmoore9862 A genius can make something *look* simple when it's not.
Aah this song, was 13 years old, had posters of gilbert all over my bedroom wall, grew up forgot about him until i heard this song again, memories came flooding back, ah wish i was back there again
Yes Christina we all do. It would be great
Saw him live a few years back, A very talented man, this one was always my favourite !
Have a look at The Ocelots cover of it 👍
He wrote so beautifully !!! Alone again is one of the most beautiful songs ever written !!!
I totally agree a great singer and his songs were full of meanings....
Under-appreciated songwriter. Great melody and lyrics. I'm 68 and to this day your song Alone Again Naturally still chokes me up.
This was his best song. A fine single and debut UK hit.
MASTERPIECE .THANK YOU GILBERT O SULLIVAN.
What can you say about this musical genius ? his songs are just superb and timeless, I see him sometimes at Church in Jersey where we both live, he is a very quite and shy man , but put him in front of a Piano and an Orchestra and something magic happens. Gilbert ( Ray ) O Sullivan is a Superstar.
Grazie Gilbert ❤ le tue canzoni mi hanno donado i miei migliori anni della vita . La tua voce entra nel profondo del cuore.... egi / Genoa/Italy
Seen him live 2 years ago. Absolute genius. Superb even now. Real songs.❤
did he still have his cap on
Paul Gambaccini described this as "one of the great songs of all time." I think I agree.
Rick Gordon I agree!!
He sure did but Paul obviously haven't kept up with the Gilbert OSullivan output! He revealed some embarrassing fundamental flaws in a Gilbert OSullivan mini documentary and view Gilbert as the most missing in action artist of his adulthood! Paul, hate to break it to ya but Gilbert has been constantly on the road since 1990 and as a recording artist he's been active from 1967 to the current date!
It's a beautiful song. Breathtakingly simple but extraordinarily sublime.
I agree too. I love this song.
He was the most underrated singer ever.my opinion all these years later, he was brilliant 👍
A masterclass in writing and singing without a doubt
This was our wedding day dance song in August 1978,my wife loved it so,so much,,,,,,August 2017,she passed away, and we had it played at her funeral, saddest day ever, god i miss her....Thanks for posting it,its very emotional, yet soothing both rolled into one.
Much love from Upstate NY.....God Bless.
Thank you so much for posting this 😍
Am 72, absolutely loved and still love his music❤
Love this song, takes me back to junior school in 1970
Yep, 1970 is when it was published 🙂
Me too… but ‘Clare’ was a bit dodgy
@@franceleeparis37 Don't be silly
So talented - beautiful song ❤
The simplicity of this song has made it stand the test of time, don't you think?
My mum bought the LP when it was released. It’s the only record that our family actually wore out. We must have played it thousands of times.
Just`perfect....
Brilliant!!! I can never not enough of this song. It's just brilliant. Only if all could get this feeling...
I didn't quite get him at the time..but as the years have gone by I realise what a talent the man had, with his Poetry.
As for his dress sense.?
There is still the remnants of a little boy inside every man.
I first saw G O’S in 1972 and then 2022…nothing changed he’s still brilliant.😎
Going to see him next May 4 in Sydney. Truly great songwriter and, from what I've heard, an exceptional performer as well. Very much looking forward to his concert.
Un grand talent ....ses chansons ne prennent pas la poussiere mais irradient la lumiere😊
Irish talent!......unequalled!
Italian talent is the best.
@@DracoPadilla I inform that an Italian band i profeti made a cover of this song. I wonder how many irish artists felt the need to cover italian songs. Give Caesar what belongs to Caesar.
Genius doesn’t even come close.
👏👏👏👏👏👏
Alone Again, Claire, Matrimony and the list goes on.... what talent, what poetic genius. When I hear Alone Again or Claire, it immediately takes me back to where i first heard those songs while a year's stay in Paris, as if it were yesterday. Songs that do that stay in your heart forever.... I hope to hear them beyond.
Goosebumps. Tears. Beauty has a home.
I wasn't born in the 70s but got my love of gilbert thru my parents...what a talent he is (timeless) 👍
You have matured as a glass of red wine 😀
@@celiabeverton4514 I think you’re right 😄 , I thought I’d have to age at sometime , great song though .
The arrogance of youth 🙂
I’ve never ever thought of it as slow and boring, I’ve always liked it and I wasn’t born until 9 years later… It was my Mum got the 7” 45 and I always played it together with ‘Clair’ and ‘Alone Again (Naturally)’ (1972)
Next to "Alone Again Naturally" this is one of Gilbert's most beautiful songs....the music, combined with his voice and lyrics are perfection....LOVE THIS always ~
Hello ,how are you doing?
Having been born in 1980 I obviously didn't catch Gilberts Golden Days in the commercial spotlight in the 70s buy was introduced to his music by my father.
We tried he came locally but all the tickets were sold, I was gutted, but I still bought his CD🤩🤩🤩🤩
Saw him in Brighton a few years back, was fantastic
The Downs theatre? I used to stay at the Babbacombe cliff hotel regularly, just slightly down the hill. I saw 'A bed full of foreigners' there in the mid eighties...
Was Gilbert's guitarist Bill Shanley? I saw this pair at Basingstoke last night - excellent! ♥
Unrivalled!
A most talented man. I was in my prime when his songs were popular.
Better music, better times.
Also, i love the left hand technique on the piano.
Great stuff!
Can't stop playing this song makes me think of how fast my life is going by so relaxing an makes me thankful for life.
So love Gilbert singing this song, and I was around when it first came out, it’s now 2024❤
Oh my god I really love ❤ Gilbert o Sullivan his lyrics and his voice is so marvellous and he sings so beautiful I can't stop looking at him when he is on that piano I just sit and close my eyes he is the most genius song writer ever ❤❤❤❤
Im Malaysian…He is An Irish genius..Love most of his songs..still listening to this song today!
Who would have thought he would go on to become the huge star he became, writing and performing many big hits. He was a remarkable talent !
Congratulations!!! Beautiful music and interpretation!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
This is so beautifull
Masterpiece!! One of the most junderated songwriters ever.
No irish childhood is complete without gilbert in the times that test your resolve, weddings and funerals mostly, that strange duality of new love and old loss. Peace
A child who asks for confirmation from his parents, the only thing that confirmed me as a child was the daily beating from my father. From your youth it strengthens your character, but when you are older and father and grandfather yourself, it becomes a nightmare, almost every night. Thanks Gilbert, your songs always gave me a lot of support in my youth. 😪
If he'd just written this one, it would be enough. But a proven 70s classic songwriter back when it mattered. Deserves much more respect.
Yes, he does.
Beautiful!❤
We all know that this genuis is grossly underrated and under-appreciated..But, there is something very rewarding (in a selfish way) that I have been listiening to his music since the 70s..Everytime I go though my own list of favotite songs, his songs fill up good portion of the list. Thank you, Mr. O'Suiilivan, for your beautiful music!!
The more I hear this song, the more beautiful it gets❤ A real masterpiece, one of the best songs in the world if you ask me.
This song never gets old. Never ceases to make me wanna cry. Love Gilbert/Ray ❤
never gets old great great song
I’m a Chinese fisherman I velly much love this song
Same ne too! I ruv this song!
Only now (at 65) do I realise what an superb songwriter he is. Such wonderful melodies.
You are not alone. I am 60 and have just realised it too...
Funny enough I loved GOS because of this very song, I was 20 at that time, but he was seen by young people as a bit of an oddball, but I saw through that image and just loved his music, and now at the tender age of 71 myself I still enjoy listening to his music, this one is my all-time favourite though, the music is amazing with brilliant lyrics, which was a little out of step during that glam rock period !
still writing , still singing , still performing.. so proud of this irish genuis. may he go on forever
My very first superstar, and still is. Back in my highschool days, I had his posters on my walls. LOVE ALL HIS WORKS. Have them in all formats: cassettes, cd, spotify, and vinyls.
A genius.. nothing less!!
