- Hello and welcome to this series which will look into various elements of Kingdom Death: Monster with a focus on both strong "meta" strategies and also how to make more goofy and fun options work, because it's not a board game if you are not having fun!
In this video is covering the broad board game mechanical history leading to Kingdom Death: Monster and explaining why I use Archtypes when playing Kingdom Death and the benefits of this philosophy. Note: This is not the ONLY way to play the game, it is just my chosen methodology.

00:00 - Introduction
The history lesson was very enjoyable. As someone who is a big MonHun fan before I got into KDM, I wanted to just bring up that the gameplay loop of Hunter -> Gear -> Harder Hunter ad infinum is the reason those games are so playable. You have direct short term goals of what gear you want to build to make the next big bad more fightable, and KDM providing additional civilization building, and enemies that come to you that are harder really helps amp tension. The fact that every hunt is necessary, and every death can be costly, is something that really helps marry all these ideas together; and I don't think I've seen any game do quite what MonHun does as well as KDM.
Be right back, was just reminded of the Heroquest video and need to do my bi-annual watch
Absolutely worth the rewatch every time!
Fen! I love your content and I watch every video you put on the TH-cam.
I just want to add one thing: you said two times, one in the first video of the series and now in this one that they Rawhide set gives 50% more survival, but it effectively doubles the survival.
So let's say you first roll on a 6+ and then on a 5- alternatively. So if you have seven survival if you don't have the set you go 76543210 but if you do have the set you go 776655443322110 so from 7 you go up to 14 survival. If you halve the cost, you double the effectiveness!
I honestly enjoyed the history lesson. Also oddly I've never mentally contextualized the ai deck as a main damage apparatus and the HL deck as a secondary damage effect. I always contextualized it as the HL deck providing a means for the action economy to match up with 4+ survivors.
The HL deck is certainly providing that scaling and it is also an excellent way to think about this. That action scaling is part of why pure tanks and pure supports are so powerful. If they don't interact with the HL deck, the monster loses part of its scaling against actions that it cannot do anything against.
I love this game and I love your work on every Video and other content you have done❤
Wonderful video, thank you!!!
Great video as always Fen
Finally we’re getting to meta segment! Thank you Fen, great vid as always
Thank you so much for this video 🙏 … I’m brand new to KDM with core box coming to me this week and having watched a ton of videos to gain understanding this one truly broke things down in a truly foundational way that I can then apply right away going into my first campaign that will help me better tactically … also thank you for the gaming history lesson found it truly fascinating and remember playing the first heroquest as a young kid so totally took me back
I know I keep meming about this everywhere but you can definitely bring more attack potency to the builds ... Everyone is too scared of speed.
Thanks for this very detailled video, love it ! Did not realised how much warhammer quest has in common (still play it too).
Great and detailed as always!
Do you think you could do a video going over each of the armor sets currently available and give some optimal builds via affinity, utility, or damage? Then maybe some optimal builds for characters like Leyline Walkers? I would love to see your input/builds. You're very thoughtful and have a ton of insight.
I'll be covering armour sets in each of the videos about the classes. Though after that I can certainly see if there's worth to an additional video about armour as a whole.
So maybe the fact that we always attack with every survivor is the reason we never made it past ly11 since release xD
great vid
Oh nnnoooo please reupload with the vocal audio going stereo. Your voice is only coming out the left.
Sorry about that, it's not something I can fix as I don't know how it happened. I am in the right audio channel also but it seems to be faint.
