I made this mincemeat last year. Last week I sent a jar to my 78 year old English mum (we are in the US) to make her mince pies for the holidays. She gave it an A+.
i do love a good mince pie. mum made her pastry for these with good old lard and it was delicious. pop the top off and place a large pat of brandy butter in, replace the top and enjoy.
Oh thank you for this recipe! I just LOVE these. The warmth of the spices and the sweetness of the fruits just makes me think of Christmas! So so good! Happy Holidays and wishing you and yours all the best! xx
LlMade this last night and it is DELICIOUS! I even used moscovado sugar too! (Ordered from Amazon) LOVED the hint to butter the pan…So much fun sharing with my British friends in Ohio!
Sorry but I want to ask a stupid question please🙈When I bake a roast in the oven do I switch on the top and bottom elements please? Or just the bottom element? It is an electric oven. Thanks so much😊😊 I Love your channel😊😊
Hi Gemma, I love love love your mince pies. We have moved from South Africa to the States and can't always get all the ingredients that we used to get in SA. It has been so helpful that you give substitutes eg pumpkin spice instead of mixed spice.
Love your entrepreneurial story, it made me laugh out loud, as it reminded me of myself as youth selling my older brother's highschool textbooks for ten cents. My mom and brother were very cross with me 😂😂😂
Hi Gemma! You mentioned in the video that the mincemeat was good for up to a year. How is it being stored, in order to preserve it that long? And - can this be canned, using either a water bath, or a preserve cooker? Many thanks. Hope y'all have a toasty warm weekend!
Store the mincemeat in sterilized jars in a cupboard for up to 1 year. You can sterilize jars in the microwave with a little water in them or you can steam them. So you can make a Traditional Mincemeat recipe in advance and use it in my Homemade Mince Pies recipe, www.biggerbolderbaking.com/mince-pies/
My favorite pie is probably mincemeat. I’m sure the vegan version is good-raisins, apples and spices…how could you go wrong with that? 😋However, traditional mincemeat does contain ground up beef fat. That’s why it’s called mincemeat. The Nonesuch brand sold in stores contains beef. My mother and aunt used to make it. Their recipe had a bit of a twist, though. They used green tomatoes that were picked just before the first frost. They also used the tomatoes to make a relish or chow chow. Here is their mincemeat recipe. Homemade Mincemeat 1 peck green tomatoes (32 c.) 1 peck apples (32 c.) 5 lbs. brown sugar 1 lb. white sugar 1 lb. currants 1 lb. raisins 2 tbsp. cinnamon 1 tbsp. cloves 1 tbsp. salt 1 tsp. ginger 1 c. suet, ground 1 1/2 c. vinegar Cut up green tomatoes and grind in coarse grinder. Put in cold water with the salt, let come to boil, drain, do this 3 times. Peel and core apples; coarse grind. Mix tomatoes and apples with rest of ingredients and boil for 1 hour. Watch carefully as to not burn. Can in jars and seal. This is very rich. When making a pie, use about half mince meat and equal amounts of raw apples. This mince meat can be frozen rather than canned.
I don’t know about where you live, but currants are hard to find in my part of the US this year. I’ve been to every grocery store in town, including the fancy national chains, and no currants are available. And I’ve looked for currants and zante currants. They’re not available under either name. So I’m just using more raisins.
@@biggerbolderbaking It’s weird this year. I had to hunt through five stores to find candied peel. Usually, all the ingredients are readily available. I thought about ordering online, but the currants wouldn’t arrive until January. Moral of the story: Gather your ingredients early and make things no later than Thanksgiving.
Great recipe as always! Thank you. One question, though: is it ok for children to eat the pies with the fruits drenched in alcohol? I was wondering the same about the Irish Christmas Cake...
My mother made mince meat every year with the recipe her mother brought from Wales. She made it in October with similar ingredients, but instead of butter, she used suet and instead of whiskey she used brandy. Every week or so she added some brandy to the. crock and mixed it up. She did not cook it till she baked the tarts. I have some handmade tins that they used. Every region must have their own take on mince meat.
❤ Thank you for these wonderful recipes. I'm from Germany and I'm really interested in Ireland and Irish food. I would like to know something from you because I don't have any Irish friends or know anyone who is from Ireland... I am a vegetarian and also someone who drinks and eats non-alcoholic. Are there also meatless Irish recipes as well as traditional non-alcoholic dishes :)? I would really like to go to Ireland at some point and wanted to know a few things beforehand :) Thanks for your Christmas pudding, I'll try it out too. Kind regards, Sina 🙏❤️
Commercial mince (no) meat is getting increasingly difficult to find, even at the holidays. My grandmother used to make it with venison, but I never grew to like it. I did like the mince from the store, which I could eat with a spoon out of the jar. Now, I shall just make my own from your recipe. Thank you!
Mam will you make a video or simply reply me here about how to make edible vegetative glycerin at home .. by animal fat or by vegetative way at home!! U know We need that for Foundant ..but it's not available in my markets or country.. please help me!?
I'm sorry, but I don't have a recipe for it. My marshmallow fondant recipe uses plain vegetable oil. Check the recipe here, www.biggerbolderbaking.com/how-to-make-marshmallow-fondant/#wprm-recipe-container-19396
@@biggerbolderbaking yeah I watched that video already that marshmallow Foundant already ..that much amount of marshmallow is not adorable for me at a time.. but thank you 💝 for your responses Mam 🙏😊😊!!
Thanks for sharing your insight. It originally had meat in it. When it became used more in sweet recipes, bakers started leaving the meat out. In some areas, people still include meat in it.
Many bakers left the meat out for over a hundred years, mainly as a matter of preference. For some, the mincemeat that we know now has become tradition. Hope this helps clarify things.

Why butter and not traditional suet?
Butter is more accessible to most bakers. It is also a preference in our family. But you can use suet if preferred.
😋
Hi Gemma, how would this work if I wanted to be boring and make them alcohol-free?
Hi. You can use orange juice in place of alcohol. Hope it helps.

Why u have a faucet above the stove?
It's a pot filler and quite common in Ireland, well the UK too.
I find the fruit mince pies have too much fruit mince, so make them into a traditional english fruit mince tarts. Same ingredients 😊
Well, if they WERE traditional they’d have meat in them. Where do you think they got the name 😂

Mince pies are English
This is the Irish take on Mince Pie plus Northern Ireland is part of the UK.
This is the BEST recipe!!
