Quick Aging Brass Schlage locks to Match Antique Hardware - Ammonia Vapor Bath

  • In this video we will be quick aging a polished brass thumbturn for a old Schlage B160 style deadbolt and two Schlage mortise cylinders to install on a customers home with antique hardware.
    In this case, the customers hardware was still a “yellow brass-ey” color so we actually stripped it down and made a “brushed brass” finish that will quickly darken to a similar color. Using this technique you can experiment with darker coloring by simply leaving it in the vapor bath for longer if you need to match a “old brown” type finish.

    I am currently filming a shorter similar video using a brand new B60n Schlage Deadbolt since many don't have access to older stock (which I prefer using since it kinda "fits in" to the time period as well) As I notated a few minutes in to this video, I have never tried it on a new style b60n Schlage deadbolt so I figured, hey let's give it a go and see how it turns out!
    I will update with the link here shortly :)

    You are an artist Jason. Most locksmiths would not take the time and just show the customer the catalog and say choose and then if it doesnt match say " I guess we are going to have to replace them all"

      My thoughts exactly, Jason goes above and beyond. I would offer the customer bright brass, antique brass, or dark bronze.

    This was awesome Jason, I love seeing you working on all your creative solutions to problems that other people wouldn’t even bother with. Right up until you did the final brushing I thought it was going to end up looking crappy, but with the brush for the final touch up it came out really nice. Great work!

    I often use oven cleaner to remove finishes quickly. You can also instantly age darken brass by fanning it with the flame from a propane torch.

    That's a great way to antique a brass lock. Will have to give it a try.

    Nice video, I might try the 2nd step with amonia on my LSDA padlock that I ground the chamber pins flat to make it look old like the rest of the lock.
    Have a great day

      Stick a lubricated key in it beforehand!

    That was very Cool Jason!! I pick-up used weathered lock parts from the Habitat for humanity stores just for this reason. Surprising how many mortise cylinders they accumulate.

    Hi Jason and all #Lockforce. I have been without phone and Internet since 07 Feb, I'm in the local library using free WiFi. So just a quick one to say I'm not dead, just broke . Be safe be well 🙏. See you all soon..

    Very nice! It looks like you would recommend taking the doorknob apart first. What if you didn’t have the ability to hold the drill, with the wire brush, and the parts at the same time? Would you have had to brush it with a softer sponge or brush, like super fast? Would it have looked nearly as nice? And, what was the moisturizer you sprayed on after to protect it from the air hitting it? Thanks for the video.❤

      You could probably hand sand it down with varying layers of fine sandpaper and steel wool. I am unsure of what I used in this video, if it was in a white can it was Houdini lock lubricant but basically any product designed to protect metal finish

    seems as though you added the patina with the ammonia and then immediately removed it with the wire brush. couldn’t you have just skipped the ammonia step?

    paint stripper is really nasty stuff.... and the ammonia is worse. You need more danger money! Doesnt vinegar vapour age them quicker?

    • @selock
      @selock  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Vinegar if you want to go for the “green highlight” aged style

    emtek French Antique, I keep a few around for picky customers.

    • @selock
      @selock  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah Emtek is kinda the “king of finishes” as far as variety and are good to use in some cases. However, I kinda can’t stand Emtek ;)

      @@selock depends on products. Some of their Living finishes really don't hold up well or patina weird (especially satin brass!)
      availability of parts is why I normally go to them over Baldwin for most cases. I will never recommend any designer entry knob or lever regardless of brand. But because it is all assembled here.. it's way easier to get latches, and parts (faster and cheaper)
