A Former SEPTA NABI In Harrisburg

  • Back in late 2009, seven retired SEPTA NABI/Ikarus 416 buses were sold to Capital Area Transit (CAT) in Harrisburg, PA. Four of the buses were repainted into CAT colors, renumbered 9601-9604 and placed into service with the remaining three NABI/Ikarus buses serving as a parts supply.
    By luck, a couple friends and I found out that CAT plans to retire and scrap these buses at the end of May, with the 27th being the planned final day of operation for them. New Gillig Advantage hybrids are already on hand to replace them. So we took a trip out to the state capital in the hopes of catching one.
    And so it came to pass, that on Friday May 20th, 2011, we found ourselves taking our first rides ever on CAT with a former SEPTA bus as our vehicle on Route 13. CAT 9604 is ex-SEPTA 5061, running out its final week in service.
    Enjoy the ride and the sounds of DD50/Allison B400R-5 Speed power!

    9604 just ended up at junkyard in new ringgold Pennsylvania in 2022 I went yesterday January 15th 2023 and seen it sitting there I have pictures of it I guess after Harrisburg was done with it it got sold to trans bridge in Bethlehem Pennsylvania and then they junked it but no telling how long it’s going to sit there

    Nice to find these former SEPTA NABI still in operation in harrisburg. These may be the last runs for them as new buses arrive.

    CAT sent these NABIs off sometime in summer of 2011. They apparently needed extra buses until the 2011 Gillig Advantage hybrids came in. And since then the NABIs were sold off.

    Neat. Always wanted to see what the little pad was that the drivers typed the routes in.

    Not too long after this, 9604/5061 and RRTA Nova 996 were in service for Trans-Bridge Lines as Musikfest shuttles

    Nice video. I've been on this bus route a few times when passing through Harrisburg, most notably between the Harrisburg Mall and the downtown transfer center. Would usually take the C route from downtown to Carlisle after that. Wish they ran on Sundays.

    Indeed, it was my first time riding CAT ever... and for me, it was only my 3rd time visiting there to transitfan. And I don't know what either at 5:49. No, wait, I do. Some guy was trying to get transit directions from Doug and Doug was trying to direct him to the bus driver... lol

    The ex SEPTA NABIs have completely left the CAT property. Now days they seem to be getting new buses every year. With the 11 2011 Hybrids. 5 2012 35ft Diesels as well as 7 2013 40ft Diesels and right now the 2014 order is being delivered and appear to be all 40ft.

    • @ThomDorke
      @ThomDorke 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrWill1985 Would not surprise me if they get a new order in for 2015 as well. The non-hybrid buses over the last few years seem to be more efficient than the pre-2011 ones.

    • @MrWill1985
      @MrWill1985 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't be surprised if cat did decide to get more hybrids in 2015. I do wish rabbit transit got the advantage instead of the BRT so they could one year piggyback off of cat.

    • @ThomDorke
      @ThomDorke 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why didn't they purchase more hybrids after 2011? Was it because of cost?

    • @MrWill1985
      @MrWill1985 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe so. Pennsylvania doesn't want to spend money on purchasing transit vehicles. Which explains no white head signs. And many other features

    • @ThomDorke
      @ThomDorke 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah. I am not sure what the white head signs are. I know the 140* models of the Advantages for CAT do not have the LED displays on the inside for approaching stops and for other visual information.

    @Trainman1971. How often do you see CATs 1400 series Gilligs? I keep missing them every time I Take a trip to Harrisburg and Im always curious of whats different between the 1400s than the 1300s. I know the passenger area is exactly the same and I have noticed the driver side mirrior is mounted at the top of the drivers window and not the bottom. But I hope the 1400s have the same exact driver seat as the 1300s.

    • @trainman1971
      @trainman1971  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't been to Harrisburg in a couple of years, so I have never gotten to see even the 1300's or the 1400's yet..

      I know the 13s are a 40ft version of the 12s. The 14s I haven't seen well in person but have seen online and things are easier to see in person than through picture or video.

    • @toyoscio

      Body parts. Factory in Hungary where the earlier ones were built was shut down and sold. DD50 has been out of production for on road use for many years, so only can be rebuilt.

      LOL GCRTA can't get rid of their DD50 series fast enough, being listed on govdeals.com as obsolete and scrap. They are running them until they stop running then they are sold for scrap. That being said, it's true NABI is no more, even their parts facility in Columbus OH now wears the New Flyer logo,
