Wonderful lettuce house ya got going on there! You folks sure know how to grow some amazing plants! Keep up the great work over there and thanks so much for sharing with us. :-)
Thanks for the great information and the inspiration. We grow tatsoi (red mountain and Koji ) as a spinach substitute in our hydro. Many of our clients avoid spinach because of the oxalic acid.
Hi Wayne! Please say hi to everyone for me. Even Though I am in South Florida I get good germination of spinach by putting the seed in hydroponic oasis by first soaking the oasis with water then draining it to the point that no more water will drain off the oasis. Then I have a tub that the standard that is 4 in deep and a standard grow tray will fit into with the lid on which I put the tray (has the planted oasis) into and put the tub-grow tray in the refrigerator for 7-10 days. After that I take the tray out and put under li8ghts at room temperature (do not put on heat pat) which is from 75-77 degrees F. Della
Awesome vlog again today guys, it was great to see the update on how the hydrophobic salad bed was doing and it's definitely going amazingly well !! Thanks for sharing
Veggies look amazing. Showing a bag with only NPK for feeding made me wondering. Even Mitleider gardening method uses way more nutrients. I will stick to growing in soil, with more minerals, and life in the soil. We even have the illusion the salad greens from our backyard taste better than the grocery stuff. Like your channel, good ideas and growing methods, thanks., greetings from Holland.
Awesome. Answered a few of my questions. I was thinking of adding something like this to my small greenhouse, and will do this in the springtime. I will set it up this fall. Thanks.
This was very informative have had some times on my hands lately and watched I dont even know how many hours of TH-cam videos on doing hydroponics but found this to be one of the better ones for sure love your setup thanks for sharing going to take some of the things you have done and incorporate them into my build. Now to find that fertilizer your using.
That video was inspiring, I always look forward to watching your videos. I would like to see one about the market, how you set your display and what your selling.
Do you have a 'cutting' harvest video? I'm curious how you choose what to harvest on the 'several cuttings' crops. Your videos are so helpful! Ty for them!
Excellent video. A real inspiration to the would be farmer. At 14:27 you showed a lettuce, can you tell the variety. In the process of setting up a small system. Much appreciate your kindness. From Trinidad , West Indies.
Hey Mohammed..I'm also from Trinidad getting started with a similar system as this..I'd really appreciate some guidance joshua_ramnanan@yahoo.com Thanks in advance
Great vid, that answered a few questions for me! I think I shall continue watching your vids before firing a barrage of questions at you! Really nice set up you have there, I am very impressed! Hope you all have a great day:)
dunno if anyone cares but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times then you can watch pretty much all of the latest series on InstaFlixxer. Been streaming with my brother recently =)
hi Patty I have done some lettuce doing the tracks system it is going on 3 weeks old and it is doing great roots are pretty and white if I had your email would send you a few pics. y'all are doing a great job love your videos keep them coming and Wayne does a good job telling how he does his part
I have a five tray system in the house I raise spinach in. Germination is spotty at best. If I was 10, I plant 20. 2-3 seeds per cell. I've tried presoaking for a couple of hours and it seems to help some. Patience is key though. It's not a fast grower, but you can clip 4-6 leave off each plant in the early stages and then top it, leaving a couple small shoots in the weeks following.
+Irvin Wittmeier Awe thank you so much! Anyone can do this, you just have to follow your dreams and make them come true! Thanks so much for watching! ☺
Where do you purchase the Oasis horticulture cubes in bulk ? And where do you purchase your American troughs ? Any Canadian sources out there. Love your channel, thanks for sharing.
Ive done spinach in my Aquaponics system. Spring and fall crop. Weighted during germination. I use the same method as you though as far as starts and the seaweed extract
This system looks absolutely fantastic and easy to set up. I am looking forward to experimenting with it. How many years did it take to put the whole operations in place and to increase your sales to what they are today?
Hello, Great Video... I do not know if anyone has answered your question in regards to Spinach, but i use Masterblend. It seems to be doing great for Spinach. Actually for all greens, Master blend is amazing. Anyhow, I enjoyed your video.. and thank you for Sharing.
@@gotcha9934 I really do not know what you mean full strength... i use Master blend, and GrowBig. Grow big is less expensive and it is awesome. What i learned is that you need good grow lights.. I am growing several trees in my office, on 5 gallon grow bags. ... I can only recommend what i have used and what works. And I really like both, Grow big and Master blend. Hope the best...
@@eddiesanchez9095 full strength is the exact dosage of the manufacturer. Half strength means half dosage of dosage with the same amount of water generally for seedlings and sensitive crops. Does your nutrients work with spinach?
@@gotcha9934 Full strength, I use 3grams 3grams 2grams per Gallon.. The (2) is epson salt. When mixing make sure the epson salt is second, so it will dissolve better. The seeds of spinach is pretty big, and to germinate this, I used paper towel method, and once it grew, I placed it in my hydro. These do very well if you use Kratky method. Hope the best...
Your celery needs to be blanched, traditionally it was earthed up as it grew in the field - thats why you may find soil in field grown crops, why not use brown paper or the like and wrap it up as it grows to exclude the light? Great videos btw!!
Super nice setup ! I also get those very cold days here in Ottawa. I've notice that there is a couple of basil plants in only one "cube". How many do you plan per "cube" ? Again for the basil, what is the growing media ? If its coco coir, are you using a filter at some point ? I'm trying to get rid of those rockwool cubes. Thanks !
Hi is there anyway to grow healthy seedlings without the use of grow lights? I recently started watching your videos and it's really informative thank you very much keep it up.
I know Chuck from Fenster Farms had a bunch of spinach growing a while back. I guess it was not in a NFT system but it was in a greenhouse. Maybe he can shed some light on his spinach growing methods :) I have a lot of issue with spinach but im in Florida. I hear it has to be 75 ish for it to do well. Thanks for sharing :)

Hi I was wondering what kind of Algaecide you use to get the algae out of the tubes /trays. I would think that it would build up after a grow cycle. Thank You would love to see more from the greenhouse!
Hello. Nice informative video. I am not into green farming or vegetables growing at all but out of my curiosity.. i can see white tubes going into growing trays. These tubes are also connected with a pvc pipe underneath. What these tubes are for?
Okay, so I'm getting here a tad late. Patti, Sorry about Wayne, but he's taking of the ultimate Greenhouse and still watching over you. Could you please tell me where I can buy Muir Lettuce Seed? I've Googled it and found nothing other than a multi-pack with Muir included. Where do you buy your seeds from?
Thanks for sharing! Love the setup! - quick question, what is the typical ratio of fertiliser, calcium nitrate and water that gets you to the 1.2 EC for the summer ? - Trying to figure how how much fertiliser I will go through in my setup and if it will make economic sense. Thanks!
+Saurabh Mundra Good question, we make a brine with 50 u.s. gallons of water, 120 grams of fertilizer and 90 grams of calcium nitrate. I hope this helps you out.
Amazing hydroponic system. Any suggestions on how to grow in a 10x10 feet area for home consumption? Tried different solutions and lights but with poor results. Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the video - it's very inspiring. It looks like your plants are sitting directly in the troughs - no net cups. Can you comment on the advantages of doing it this way, and tell me what media (and size) you are using? Thanks in advance for the help!
Hi, just started watching you channel. Is it possible to do a small hydroponic garden in a basement? I grow seedlings for my outdoor garden in my basement under lights with heat mats and it works great. I am trying to determine if I can grow plants to maturity in my basement, lettuce, cucumbers, and other veggies. Just wondering if possible or I would need to build a greenhouse with big investment.
+Lenien Schob If you start with hope that is the best start. Everyone had a budget. Just do what you can do for the time being and it will build. "If you build it they will come" Never forget that!
Thanks again, I watched the video another time and had a question regarding harvesting the plants. How far back do you cut the chard, kale and arugula when you harvest each week.
+bphogenson Thank you again for watching! With the swiss chard and kale, I harvest as close to the main stem as you can get, and as for the arugula, you would leave a couple of inches above the trough when harvesting. I hope this makes sense, but if not let me know and I'll video it for you to better explain. . Patti
I have grown muri lettuce. Yes it is a leaf lettuce, but in away it is not. The leaves are firm and crisp, well not a head lettuce it has some characteristics of head. It is sweet and my wife who hates loose leaf lettuce and prefers head lettuce, (and maybe bib) but she likes Muri.
Hi, Very useful video, I've question as a person who just hydroponic at my home, it's how much must be EC for crops, and how you adjust it? I'm thankful to get your reply.
I'd like to implement something similar in my backyard this year and start a crop for sale production of lettuces, herbs and microgreens. Could you get Waynerrrr :) to do a video on how he constructed the troughs and more on hydroponic knowledge? I'd love to do the course although I'm in North Carolina, US. I hope burying the tank will be enough to keep the water cool, I doubt Ontario gets as hot as the south. My space is an urban backyard with two small greenhouses. I love your videos they are very helpful and informative quite an inspiration your farm and family are lovely. #SAVETHEEGGPLANTS!
+roni brittain Hi Roni, yes I will film a video within the next couple of days and Waynerrrr can answer your questions lol. It does get hot here but probably not the heat you get. Thank you for your kind words and I'm very happy you find the videos helpful. Thanks for watching! Patti
hello spring hill farm, was wondering if you keep the led lights on all night? The red ones that you are using? Also, do you use them all year or just in the winter? Thanks
I just got done watch this and am very excited as to where I can go with my project. The question I have is where did you buy or what are the things you are growing to adult stag veggies in. Thanks Jeff
I have watched and enjoy your videos. Is to possible that you could make one on the pest prevention and you you do it. I have problems with aphids and white flies. The white flies are the worst as they will literally shut me down for the summer. I have a screen house with a poly roof. It will reach temps of 110 degrees I have to use coolers in the tank to cool the water down. I also would like to know how you keep the tall plants from falling down or turning the tubes over ( upside down) . I use to grow hydo tomatoes and there was no way to cool the house down to grow in the summer, I hope that you can guide me with the bug problem. Thank You Gary
Hi Gary, thank you so much! We never have a problem with white flies, do you use a shade cloth? You may want to try a water wall as well. We get aphids and we bring in beneficial bugs (lady bugs and paricidic wasps) these really do help. There are also beneficial bugs for white fly but you would have to research that. I really hope you solve your problem, there is nothing more frustrating. Please let me know if you find anything. Thanks for popping by. Patti
spinach will grow in a system like yours germination to planting size slow lots of patience needs to be well rooted before planting in system I will try essential see if that gives them a boost

Hi goodday, if u dont mind me asking... R u running this entire system on 1 nutrient solution mix, meaning all these plants, lettuce, chard, basel etc. have same ppm n tds requirement? N if so, whats ppm n tds r u running this system on if u dont mind me asking... Thnx 🙂
+fred kingsley Good morning, the heat mat was purchased through Crop King and it's a 4' mat. I'm not sure of the name of it but you can purchase them through American Hydroponics as well. Thank you for watching and happy you enjoy.
Thank you so much for all the good information. I have a couple of questions regarding your salad mix. I know there is mesclun, braising mix, and spring mix but I don't know what the differences are between them other than the taste is a little different because of the different types of greens that are in them. I was hoping that you could tell me what greens exactly that you put in your mix and what you call it because I would like to start producing a salad mix to sell to our local restaurants. I also wondered what type of heating system you use to heat your Greenhouse and if you're satisfied with it or not?
+workin350 Thank you for watching! Yes, we have tried the mesclun and it was alright but we find you get more weight and nicer lettuce mix by harvesting a mix of different lettuces. Our mix consists of red and green Boston, red and green Romaine and Muir. We call it Spring Mix. Customers love this mixture. We also offer individual heads of each and leave the root on, another great seller. We heat with propane, it can get costly in the winter months but we are happy with it. Are you currently selling to restaurants now? Are you also doing farmers Markets? Patti
Spring Hill Farms We sold tomatoes to a grocery store and two restaurants last year with success and they are all interested in more products such as leafy greens and carrots cucumbers peppers and so on. We also sold at one farmers market last year but it was not a very good one and I felt like I spent a lot of time at the market when I should have been on the farm working. There are better farmers markets about an hour away from me and I may look in that direction in the future. I'm currently working towards setting up an aquaponics system in one end of my 30 x 96 Greenhouse to feed an nft system, thus my question about salad mix. I asked about your heating system and if you were happy with it because I went looking for a way to heat my Greenhouse and my house and my shop knowing that I couldn't afford to do it all with propane. What I settled on was a sawdust and wood chip burning boiler system which I now build and sell th-cam.com/video/_XxWaLeVhvk/w-d-xo.html . The economic benefits are great, the fuel is very cheap and if you're burning tree trimmings from local tree services the fuel can be free. If you are happy with your current system then I'm happy for you I just thought I would share this information with you because you guys share so much good information with everyone else in the gardening world. What part of Canada are you located in?
+casey wilson Good morning, Casey. We haven't tried the spinach again yet. The lettuce house is full so until we expand we will only be growing what we have been for now. There are so many things we want to try but space is always an issue. Let me know how you make out! Thanks for watching! ☺

Thanks again, I watched the video another time and had a question regarding harvesting the plants. How far back do you cut the chard, kale and arugula when you harvest each week.
+bphogenson
Thank you again for watching!
Nice video. What's the medium you using for seed germination??
Thanks! We use oasis.
Hi, Very useful video, I've question as a person who just hydroponic at my home, it's how much must be EC for crops, and how you adjust it? I'm thankful to get your reply.
What EC you use for seedlings Thanks
+roni brittain
Hi Roni, yes I will film a video within the next couple of days and Waynerrrr can answer your questions lol. It does get hot here but probably not the heat you get. Thank you for your kind words and I'm very happy you find the videos helpful. Thanks for watching!

+Spring Hill Farms
And yes, SAVE THE EGGPLANT!
I m inloveeee😍😍😍
hello spring hill farm, was wondering if you keep the led lights on all night? The red ones that you are using? Also, do you use them all year or just in the winter? Thanks
The 7-10lbs per tray on arugula, isn’t that per cutting or the total over 3 cuts? Thanks for all your hydroponic videos. Learning a lot!
+Nick Mooneyham
Hi, that is per cut. ☺
What are you growing the seeds in and where can I find it?
I just got done watch this and am very excited as to where I can go with my project. The question I have is where did you buy or what are the things you are growing to adult stag veggies in.
Thanks
Jeff
These are called NFT troughs and they can be purchased through American Hydroponics.
Thanks for watching!
Thank You
Gary
Hi Gary, thank you so much! We never have a problem with white flies, do you use a shade cloth? You may want to try a water wall as well. We get aphids and we bring in beneficial bugs (lady bugs and paricidic wasps) these really do help. There are also beneficial bugs for white fly but you would have to research that. I really hope you solve your problem, there is nothing more frustrating. Please let me know if you find anything. Thanks for popping by.
Patti
@Spring Hill Farms do you need some kind of special permit to sell what you grow? being food and all...thanks =]
what supplier did you get your grow channels from?
The majority of them came from American Hydroponics
Wayne what are the nft called and where can I get them
spinach will grow in a system like yours germination to planting size slow lots of patience needs to be well rooted before planting in system I will try essential see if that gives them a boost
I just want Ethan's Tim Hornton's mug!
christopher frazier
Hahaha!
hello, thank you for the content you make, respect. can you tell me what the solution do you use for nutrients ?
Very nice. One question. I noticed you dont have lights. Did i miss it?
+erick sal
Thank you! Yes we do have LED lights. If you watch one of the more recent hydroponic videos you will see them and hear us talk of them.
Thanks for watching! ☺
Patti
Hi goodday, if u dont mind me asking... R u running this entire system on 1 nutrient solution mix, meaning all these plants, lettuce, chard, basel etc. have same ppm n tds requirement? N if so, whats ppm n tds r u running this system on if u dont mind me asking... Thnx 🙂
Can you tell me where you bought your heat mat and which one it is? Thanks and love your channel
+fred kingsley
Good morning, the heat mat was purchased through Crop King and it's a 4' mat. I'm not sure of the name of it but you can purchase them through American Hydroponics as well. Thank you for watching and happy you enjoy.
do u have any lettuce seed germination videos before? i need details about that sir. thank you
All the plants has the same
Nutrient solution?
Yes they do
How about leaf miner, is there a wasp or something to clean up leaf miner in my chard and spinach in the greenhouse?
Thank you so much for all the good information. I have a couple of questions regarding your salad mix. I know there is mesclun, braising mix, and spring mix but I don't know what the differences are between them other than the taste is a little different because of the different types of greens that are in them. I was hoping that you could tell me what greens exactly that you put in your mix and what you call it because I would like to start producing a salad mix to sell to our local restaurants.
I also wondered what type of heating system you use to heat your Greenhouse and if you're satisfied with it or not?
+workin350
Thank you for watching!
Patti
Spring Hill Farms
We sold tomatoes to a grocery store and two restaurants last year with success and they are all interested in more products such as leafy greens and carrots cucumbers peppers and so on.
Thanks again for the awesome videos!!
We are in Ontario.
Spring Hill Farms
What is the name brand of the trough that you use for your nft system and where did you get it?
how are you doing with the spinach in rails? getting ready to try and remember you were having trouble with it.
+casey wilson
Good morning, Casey. We haven't tried the spinach again yet. The lettuce house is full so until we expand we will only be growing what we have been for now. There are so many things we want to try but space is always an issue. Let me know how you make out! Thanks for watching! ☺
Do you put any solution in your seedling station? Or just the initial water you germinate them with?
+Quinton Woronchak
We use 1/2 strength solution in our seedling station.
Good stuff. Do you have to cool your water in the summer?
+Quinton Woronchak
No, we don't have to cool our water but the tank is built into the ground and it is covered so we can keep it cool.
