Are you the Ellie in the video? You did a great job! Your first experience with its frustrations and first-time learnings was the same as mine years ago. I didn't finish the game first time I played. Returned to it a year later and found it more fun after becoming more proficient. Great job!
Hard agree. It's the classic "show, don't tell" aspect. It's one thing to explain Ellie's frustrations and triumphs, it's another thing entirely to actually hear them
As someone who just finished Hollow Knight and played it as their second game pretty much ever, Ellie’s commentary was EXTREMELY relatable lol. I hope she does continue to play even if it’s not for this series! She’d probably enjoy the Ori games too - Ori and the Will of the Wisps was my first ever game the week before I started Hollow Knight
That is very good to hear! I know Ellie appreciates that. Yes, the Ori games would be awesome! We'll definitely have to so some more Hollow Knight episodes, although we're getting scary for our next game :) Thanks for watching, Emmy!!
Which age group you are in, and why did you decide to start playing games? Why these games specifically? I ask because I am curious about what gets people into gaming.
I have a tip for Hollow knight combat. Ellie was never shown using the vengeful spirit. Spells are a great source of damage in hollow knight, usually double of the nail's damage per hit. It might be a good idea to use spells more often. This would have been a way to more easily deal with Hornet, since she often gets hit twice by the spell
Good advice! She messed around with it in the first episode, but mostly forgot about it here. I would have reminded her, but honestly, I forgot about it too, haha.
19:21 I appreciate this clip just playing in the background, cause before the hornet boss she would always get hit by the moss charger, but now her skills have grown enough to bat it aside like the common enemy it is.
That makes me really happy to hear people noticing small details like that! Thanks for commenting this. For sure, she's definitely growing a lot as she plays :)
Good for Ellie for persisting! I will admit the first time I ever picked up hollow knight, Hornet was the one that made me stop, until I finally came back to it some months later and defeated her and was able to experience the rest of the game, which I’m very glad I did! I’m conflicted now because as much as I would enjoy to see other games and genres continued to be explored in this series I would also love to see a potential full play-through of hollow knight at this point! It’s clearly the one Ellie had enjoyed and “clicked with” so far, and it’s such an incredible game in general! Either way another great video Wilson!
Yesss, she killed it!! It seems like Hornet gave a lot of people trouble, myself included. This is good to hear, I'm really glad to get some feedback on this. I think we'll continue making more Hollow Knight episodes that will be mixed in with more new games. I think consistently trying new games is kind of at the core of what makes this series tick, but it's also cool to let Ellie dig into a single game that she's enjoying. Thanks as always, Heisenberg!!
I struggled with Hornet so much on my first playthrough, glad to know I'm not alone in that lol. Another great video you guys, thanks for the entertainment to go with my morning coffee! Excited to see what you got in store for us next. :D
I too struggled so much I had to put the game away for a while. Shockingly enough I played Blasphemous after this and for some reason it finally just clicked how to play this game 😂😂😂 Beat her in 2 tries the next time I played
Thanks so much, Osaus!! Very happy you enjoyed :) We're getting spooky for our next game, but we'll be back to Hollow Knight again at some point soon. Excited to hear your thoughts :)
I also struggled just as much but I'm proud of myself because after 55 hours on my save file I was able to do the path of pain the first time after I found it and and can do most bosses hitless or with minimal hits
I've rarely been so invested in someone else's battle against a boss, so pleased she got Hornet!! Fantastic video, and I for one would be happy to see her proceed further with HK, maybe as it's own little series alongside this one!
What's up, Kerbal!! You and me both, lol. Thank you so much, it seems like a lot of people would be down for more Hollow Knight. I think that's a great idea, a little miniseries of sorts mixed in with other new games :)
Dying hundreds of times to a boss really does make you jaded to death and dangers while exploring. "Oh I died? Cool now I can get better at taking that path, or go explore this other path"
Also, it took me a long time before I figured out that healing during boss fights is a dumb move most of the time. I guess I was used to dark souls and your estus being so important
It really does! I love the transition. Yeah, the more I watched Ellie attempt the bosses, the more I realized that there wasn't really any point to healing before the end of a cycle...
I know this goes against the series, but seeing as Ellie is loving hollow knight and the fans are really enjoying it, I think it would be awesome to see more episodes of hollow knight. I know I would love to see this turn into a full playthrough!!
For sure, we'll definitely make more episodes! I appreciate the feedback and am very happy you're enjoining the series :) Any other games you'd like to see us cover?
@xtremezz_potato1162 I agree, I absolutely love rain world! Although it is a really hard game, even for hardcore gamers. I would love to see Ellie try it out, just to see how she interacts with the world. I'm not sure it would be the best game for a long series though, since the difficulty level is so high.
18:44 *moss knight also, W video, this was a solid improvement from the first one. I do hope this series continues somewhat 🤎 Feels more engaging now that we can actually hear Ellie's commentary and reaction.
After having seen the previous episode yesterday and looking through the channel I was a bit bummed that you'd only do one episode per game, so I was very happy to see this video come up on my recommended page.
Glad you enjoyed!! As much as I want to try out a bunch of different games, I think it's also fun to revisit some viewer favorites. Would you like to see more episodes featuring the same game in addition to new games? Would love your feedback!
Yes, this! If she wants to play the game, who are you to stop her from playing the damn game? An unbounded Lets Play with commentary would be excellent.
So much respect for the Hornet fight grind. That one gave me a challenge when I started as well, and I already had a good amount of experience with similar games at that point. I knew you could do it, Ellie! Edit: also, I'm really enjoying this series and particularly the Hollow Knight episodes. Seeing as Ellie seems to be enjoying the game as well, I'd love for this miniseries on the game to continue! :D
Great to see you back, LoZander! Thank you for such a kind comment :) Yeah, these Hollow Knight episodes have been really fun to make. I think we could try to mix more of them in as we keep trying different games. Would be fun to pick a game every once in a while that Ellie can play through in a more long form way!
There is actually a very small tutorial in the forgotten crossroads for down slashing near the tram. It is in a room full of spikes for reaching a grub
There's of course one earlier, in the starting area, but in both cases people that don't know about pogoing may just assume they'll need a skill they don't already have.
I knew about pogoing but didn't realise you could do it on spikes, so I waited until I had dash and double-jump and maybe something else before I made it across that one!
@@meisterwu9219I believe their point (which I agree with) is that in order to learn pogo-ing as a capability (and, importantly, movement option), you must first understand that you can swing your nail down. True, in many cases people may realize those two things at the same time (“hey look I can swing down” and “hey look when I swing down and hit something I bounce up a little”), but I would still consider them separate points of knowledge. In fact, you could even split it into three, with the third being “I can bounce off spikes, not just enemies, allowing me to get past spikes.”
As a gf who’s bf introduced her to hollow knight, this series is so relatable. Especially spending 3 hrs on Hornet 😭 I struggled so much with her. I never thought it possible but after maaaany hours, I finally completed the game. I hope this series continues!! You’re certainly not alone!
Just here to join my voice to the others saying they would watch an entire series of Ellie playing Hollow Knight. I only just discovered these videos and watched part 1 and 2 back to back. So enjoyable!
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this comment!! We are definitely planning to continue Hollow Knight over time as we try other games. I hope to see you in the comments for future videos :)
1:10 There isn’t an EXPLICIT tutorial for swinging up, but there is definitely an intentional one. When you enter the aspid arena in the crossroads (which is the first “mandatory” combat encounter, where it locks you in with cage doors, plays hype music, etc.) there is a lead-up area from the left that has some platforms to jump up to some geo rocks on the CEILING. These rocks are difficult (maybe impossible?) to hit using left/right attacks, at least before getting any movement abilities. They are there to make you think, “How the heck would I get those rocks? I can’t jump high enough. Unless…” and then you see if you can up-swing in the middle of jumping, learn that you can, and then use that ability in the aspid arena (where it’s very beneficial since the enemies are above you and tend to fly away from you) to reinforce what you learned. It’s a tiny thing, but truly incredible game design.
You could argue that is actually a tutorial for jump-hitting (in general) rather than up-hitting specifically. But I think it works as both. In fact it also works as a breakable wall tutorial with the geo rock on the right, where hitting the rock from the left (as you are likely to do) will likely hit and break the breakable wall, leading to a hot spring and bench that are very useful for that first comba5 encounter for those who struggle with it.
Oh wow, that is so interesting, thank you for sharing this! It's been so long since I played through it myself that I'd forgotten a lot of this stuff. I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for more subtle inclusions like this in future videos so I can note them. Hope you enjoyed the video :)
I rarely comment but I had to say that this and the previous Hollow Knight video you guys did has been so encouraging to me. Hollow Knight was not only my first Metroidvania; it was one of my first GAMES, period, so I relate quite a bit to Ellie's struggle here. I rage-quit twice at the same boss (Soul Master) and figured it was just a game I would never be good at. Eventually, I managed to come back and complete it (something I'm quite proud of) and now Hollow Knight is one of my favorites. But even so, I had this nagging sensation that I was still just a bad gamer. Often, people post their triumphs in gaming, and rarely, their failures. It made me feel like I could never measure up. Like I would always be just a little bit behind everyone else. Watching Ellie start off in the same place I did has shown me that, no, there's nothing wrong with me. Yes, gaming can be complicated and confusing at first. I want to thank you, Ellie, for persevering even when it got difficult. Don't be discouraged. You're going to do great. Also, I wish you luck with the Soul Master. Liked and subscribed 😊
Wow, what a lovely comment, thank you so much for taking the time to write this Nicole!! I just read it out loud to Ellie and she is so appreciative of it as well. I absolutely love hearing stories like that. You are absolutely a gamer and should be incredibly proud of your accomplishments!! Beating Hollow Knight is no joke, as I'm sure you know. I'm so happy you stumbled onto the channel and hope you'll join for future videos! Let me know if there are any other games you'd like to see Ellie try :)
Yeeeessss. Ellie turning into a true gamer. Hope she can find the time to continue with Hollow Knight - does she know that Hornet will be the protagonist of Silksong?? :D
@@Wilson-108 I'm hoping she has so much fun gaming that she continues to play outside the context of your videos :> Besides that, it is always fun to see someone go on their first Monster Hunter (world) hunts :,) Oh and 100% agree on celeste as well ^^
I just killed Hornet for the first time 2 days ago... Took me about the same time it did Ellie. I literally went back to Elden Ring at one point to chill out. Great job Ellie! ❤
If it makes her feel any better, this is very much what my first playthrough was like and I kept on, the game became my favorite game ever, and I've even completed the game in steel soul mode. Many bosses took me hours the first time, but I made it.
This is such a nice series to watch. I can't imagine the effort to make these videos. The narrating voice over it's also very introspective and intriguing to listen to
Wow, thank you so much for saying this, Gabriele!! I can't tell you how much this kind of feedback means to me. I hope you'll join us for future videos! Any other games you'd like to see us cover? :)
It took me the same amount of time to beat hornet, and im pretty sure i swore 10 times as much. This episode was even better, i love that ellie commentates as well. Great vid, cant wait to see another part!
@@Wilson-108 ..now keep in mind I am not a scientist and I was told this by someone I consider smart, but it makes sense to me. But please don't quote this as scientific fact 😆
@Wilson-108 I think Shadow of the Colossus, with its pretty nonorthodox controls and reliance on the mechanics presented for the bosses to be beaten would be interesting to see
I know it's a long shot but since I see so many respectful and supportive comments under this video I wanted to ask you all for recommendations on similar games (but maybe with less combat?) to try out. I am just like Ellie gaming experience wise and mostly play point-and-click detective stories and cozy things like Stardew. Really enjoyed the videos and subscribed for more commentary as it's so fun to see someone sharing my experience in gaming yet so cool to see them try out different things and get better at them! Go Ellie!
Thank you so much for leaving this comment! I absolutely love hearing from people such as yourself :) This one's a bit obscure, but if you're interested in a 2D game with tons of exploration, Kyntt Underground would be a great one to try. There's no combat at all! VVVVVV is another great title. It's got some challenging platforming sections, but it's very straightforward and also doesn't include any combat. Both games with very strange names, haha, but I think you may enjoy them! I hope you'll keep us posted on your gaming progress, would absolutely love to hear any and all thoughts whatever games you decide to try. I'm thrilled you stumbled onto the channel! Welcome aboard :)
@@Wilson-108 Thank you for the response! Will definetely check the games out. Looking forward for more videos, will check out your work for sure, happy new year to you and Ellie! Her commentary bits are brilliant :)
Ellie barely scraping by the moss chargers on her way to warn it and then just casually slapping them out of her path on the return trip is such a great mark of progress
This is my favorite game of all time and I am enjoying living vicariously through Ellie to get a first play through again! I will watch any and all HK content you make! Good work!
@Wilson-108 she might enjoy the Ori series! Y’all could also play cuphead together and put some limitation on how much you can participate. If I think of others I’ll comment on later videos!
@ Inside is a PHENOMENAL 2D platformer and story game! The whole thing from start-to-finish is about 6ish hours. It’s def a little creepy, but one of the best games out there! Would be cool to see Ellie’s reaction to that one :)
@ maybe you should also try Zelda breath of the wild, I am sure she would love it and the video would also do well, can’t wait for more hollow knight, subscribed so I can watch it as soon as it drops
OMG, 128 deaths. Ellie, you poor thing. But you made it! This advice wouldn't have helped me because I was locked into the same cycle of RUNAWAYHEAL! RUNAWAYHEAL! as you were, but believe it or not, it actually is sometimes better to just use the fireball.
Haha, she did it!! That's a valid strategy, I don't blame you one bit, haha. We both totally forgot about the fireball lol, but you're right, I think that probably would have helped quite a bit...
Oh wow, this makes so happy to hear, thank you for taking the time to let me know!! I'm thrilled you're enjoying the game and hope you'll keep us posted on your progress :)
I think we all are in agreement that we would love to see Ellie continue with Hollow Knight. If y'all decide to, feel free to give non-spoiler advice in order to help her along as most of us would've gotten help from the internet anyways lol
Welcome back, Mike! Seems like the people want more Hollow Knight :) We'll definitely make a part 3 soon enough! Maybe we can sprinkle in HK over time as we try other games
Loved to see Ellie play HK! I'm not a skilled player, never played growing up and got into it just a couple of years ago and I'm in my late 40s. I found HK so hard. I made very little headway and struggled with the same things as Ellie and I quit about 10h in. I just felt so stupid when I couldn't do things like jumping or navigating easily and dying so much. So it's nice to hear how you're encouraging her and how you're impressed with her playing. This has inspired me to give it another go!
This is so wonderful to hear, thank you for taking the time to comment, Imia! Ellie has been making huge strides and I have no idea that you will too once you jump back in. If you feel like, come back and let us know how you're getting on with it! :)
Great video once again! It's so cool to see the process of someone getting better at something. I remember that hornet fight took me a long time too. Really hope she keeps on playing because I want to see her fight the mantis lords. They are probably the best designed boss in a video game ever, and it's when you truly appreciate everything about this game.
Thank you so much!! Really appreciate you joining us for another. Definitely, I'm really curious to see how she handles future challenges... I think we'll have to make another part :)
I loved watching this!! As a fellow girlfriend who was encouraged to get into video games, Hollow Knight was the first game that really clicked with me and I love it to this day!! I’ve watched other videos passively from this channel and enjoyed them, but this video made me subscribe just for the hope that Ellie will play more Hollow Knight!!! It’s clear that she’s enjoying the exploration and I really want to see what else she’ll be able to find. I’m so glad she found a game that she’s enjoying, and I’m extra glad that it’s hollow knight
Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to leave this comment!! I love to hear that Hollow Knight was influential in getting you into games. Ellie has been having a great time with and we absolutely plan to make a part 3 in the coming weeks. I hope to see back for that one! Let me know if there are any other games you'd like to see us cover :)
Very well made video despite the low subscriber count! I hope to watch more people steadily realize the quality content you're putting out and jump on board!
Hey, thanks for watching another video, Bryce!! I really can't tell you how much I appreciate the kind words. Many more videos to come, welcome aboard :) any other games you'd like to see Ellie try?
@@Wilson-108 As I already mentioned, BotW would be a great one, or really any zelda game for that matter. Also piggy backing off of the dark souls video, Elden Ring could be very interesting as well, because it has a very similar feel but is much more forgiving in my opinion!
Thanks to these videos i understand why people sometimes consider games multiple times harder than i do, either due to lack of experience or just experience in other genres makes the difference really quickly.
I think its interesting how many people struggle on a boss, just to end up defeating it with near full health and near full soul. Once it clicks it clicks.
That has honestly been one of the most interesting take aways from making this series so far! I think it's easier to notice when it isn't you playing. Once you succeed, it looks like you've done it a hundred times.
It's honestly fascinating to see games like this seen from perspective of someone with less experience in them. My first time playing Hollow Knight has been after playing many other games, and it appearently has made me take many parts of the game for granted. Best of luck to Ellie with continued journey through Hollow Knight, I hope we get to see more of it here as well :D Also, when "most agitated" ends up being an f-bomb, you're an absolute angel of a human, never change please
I'm glad you found the video interesting!! It's been really enlightening for me to make these videos, I feel like I learn something new with every one :) We'll definitely be making more episodes of the series! Let me know if there are any other games you'd be interested in seeing us cover. Thank you for such a kind comment, Qolem :)
I just found this channel and I’m loving it! As an avid hollow knight enjoyer it’s always nice to see other people “having fun” with Hornet on their first playthrough (schadenfreude much?) 😂 One thing that both of you overlooked (possibly intentionally) is the new ability you unlocked at the end of the last video - Vengeful Spirit. You don’t have to use it, and in Ellie’s case it might actually be detrimental to try learning spells right now\*, but just keep it in the back of your mind that shooting a big blob of soul at enemies *is* an option! \*it’s just one more thing to think about in a boss fight. Ellie’s doing great and I absolutely don’t mean to imply otherwise - I’ve got an order of magnitude more playtime than she does and they still give me trouble, and I know I’m not the only one like me out there, so don’t feel discouraged by failure. It’s a game! Like Celeste says at the beginning of Ch3, Be proud of your death count! The more you die, the more you’re learning! Keep going!
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a kind comment, Peter!! Can't tell you how much I appreciate it. We definitely overlooked Vengeful Spirit! I would have nudged her about it, but it completely slipped my mind. I think I was just too engrossed, lol. I'll definitely remind her whenever we get around to a part 3! I'm going to send this to Ellie so she can see it, I think it will be really motivating for her! Oh man, I love me some Celeste, we'll definitely be covering that on a future episode :) I hope you'll join us!
Great video, glad she's enjoying it! Just so you know, Hornet doesn't have cycles, she staggers. Rather than bringing her health down by a set amount, her stagger is triggered by hitting her a certain amount of times over a period of a few seconds. So the amount of times you'll see the stagger animation depends on how frequently you're hitting her.
I really hope you continue this :) This is such a great game for gaining that feeling of mastery. I've had so many times where I've felt something was impossibly hard and thinking to myself that I was just never going to beat it and then later on coming back and pushing through and learn that not only could I beat it, I could learn to beat it consistently. The first time I played I think I gave up after 5-10 hours and had a long break, then I decided to go back in and started from the beginning and learned just how much better I had gotten from that experience, which helped me push further. And with each new attempt from scratch I managed to move on to harder and harder challenges. You can really go from giving up on an early enemy to beating the game 112% and that's what I love about it. Another game I've felt similarly type of progression of skill is Celeste. Going from hundreds upon hundreds of deaths per level and then finding myself going back and going through that same level deathless is such a great feeling :)
We definitely will! I'm so glad you're enjoying them and thank you for taking the time to leave this kind comment :) Starting a game over can be such an effective way to see how much progress you've made without realizing it. Oh man, I absolutely adore Celeste!! We will definitely be covering that game in a future episode of the series :) What a classic!
I remember when I first played the game some the harder bosses gave me so much trouble but after some internet scouring and experimenting this is the best strategy I found: 1. For the first few attempts of the fight focus on learning how to dodge attacks, this is kinda what happened in the beginning of the hornet fight, but during this time also take the time to analyze the move set and see what opportunities there are for rest/healing and attacks. You want to improve your knowledge and comfortability in the fight so don’t just panic. 2. Start acting on those opportunities you saw. Start slow, only trying for one attack at a time and getting away harmless (I remember when I was fighting Grimm for the first time there was only like one move were I could find a time to attack). For hollowknight this usually starts with finding out where to do nail swings and then later figuring out when to use spells (which do much more damage)This is the time for experimenting, maybe changing how you were doing those dodges to make attacking easier or completely changing your strategies. 3. With all your new knowledge, strategy and muscle memory from each attempt, raise hell on em. Anyways this is just what helped me while playing the game. I don’t how well it works outside of hollowknight though 😅. Usually ‘gamers’ will do steps one and two at the same time but as a beginner it sometimes helps to take it slowly and separate them.
This is a fantastic approach, thank you for sharing! I'll have to send this to Ellie :) I think you've nailed down the essentials for many games, even beyond Hollow Knight!
Hollow Knight is a great game and Hornet is the first big barrier to new players as she acts as a skill check. If combat proficiency is lacking, then the rest of the game is blocked off. I think the vast majority of players struggled with Hornet their first time and it’s great to see Ellie achieve victory despite the time it took. Looking forward to more content, and thanks both of you!
@ Keeping with popular games seems a safe bet. I think Slay the Spire would be interesting to see how she chooses to build her deck with the friendly and easy to understand mechanics. Portal would be fun to watch and might help her acclimate to a first-person perspective. I’ve heard Hades is fun, but I haven’t played it and it might be overwhelming. Hope those options help!
Her resilience is amazing. I'd like to see her play Sekiro since it's kind of a weird game, it's easier when you have no experience playing soulslike games and a bonkers harder when you're a veteran. Seeing her progress would be amazing
For sure, I'm so impressed by her! We're gonna have to do Sekiro at some point down the line. Oh man, so many cool games for her to try. Let me know if you have any other suggestions!
@Wilson-108 oh, wow. I wasn't expecting a reply, thanks! It might be a little difficult to give recommendations without know what you both like but I'll try! If she's interested in trying more metroidvanias, then I'd recommend ori and the blind forest, aswell as its sequel ori and the will of the wisps. Another metroidvania I know is nine sols, it's pretty difficult but it has a stroy mode if needed. If she would like to try something new, then I'd recommend checking out portal 1/2, Inscryption and one of my personal favourites undertale. If you try any of them I hope you have fun! Btw happy new years! And sorry for the late reply
I try to reply to as many comments as I can! I'll definitely remember your name moving forward :) Awesome recommendations! We'll definitely try to cover some of these. I hope you'll share your thoughts on future episodes!
Hi Wilson! Just discovered your channel and it is awesome! I’m kind of in the same boat as Ellie. I also just discovered Hollow Knight and it is so fun to see how other people are adapting, learning, and playing it! Love the series man. Great video :)
Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to leave this comment, Ollie! Makes my day to hear about people enjoying the videos :) We'll continue with more Hollow Knight in the future, but let me know if there are any other games you'd like to see us cover! I hope to see you around for more episodes :)
Dude I forgot your channel, thank god this popped up in my recommendations, your analysis adds so much and is a lot better than a lot of other creators that do kinda similar content, keep it up!
Not that big of a gamer myself haha. I have completed two other games: Minecraft (a sandbox game) and Mindustry (a real-time strategy, factory management, and tower defense game) It would be cool to see Ellie explore more genres. :)
I've seen other comments to the same effect, so let me throw my vote behind making Ellie vs Hollow Knight a regular part of the channel! It's such a charming game, and seeing her go through it would be wonderful.
I'm also playing hollow knight for the first time (now trying to get the king's brand or something like that idk)!! tip for ellie that helped me a lot: most of these bosses are easier to dodge and attack if you try to stay more towards the center of the arena p.s: terraria is a really fun game with some battles that i’ve found really hard at the start and maybe ellie would like to try also
That's a great tip, I've actually mentioned that to Ellie!! I hope you're enjoying Hollow Knight. Terraria could be a really cool game to try, thanks for the suggestion, Issa :)
There's one room to the far right of the crossroads, which does attempt to have the player figure out they can swing down, and bounce off spikes. It's about 4-5 platforms with spikes covering them, and a grub visible at the end. Which is inviting players to experiment and hopefully figure out how to pogo. I think it's where most players figure that mechanic out, I like that Hollow Knight respects players enough to leave some things up to you to figure out on your own, with little hints like that grub room.
Watching this make me remember my old playthrough, it take me almost a month for my first p5 run getting stuck in absrad, and because each run is almost 40 minutes i can only do 2-3 run each day before i burn out, top it of that i not even consistency able to reach absrad just fuel my frustrations even more, but when i finally beat it the joy I feel through is not like any other
tbh in Ellie fight with Hornet the best advice is jump on top of her and hit underneath, hitting upwards and underneath is mostly the key for almost all bosses, thats what i got from my 6 hours gameplay
The new HK player classic of forgotten spells lol😂loved to see the progress and would enjoy more of this. A heal/spell balance would be my biggest advice for her. (Plus congrats on defeating hornet)
I think that forgetting about vengeful spirit after coming back is pretty huge. Helps a lot with Hornet. Crossroads being so long ingrains Nail and Heal as the most important things.
Having beaten Hollow Knight myself I nowadays feel like Hornet moves in slow motion and I'd like to see Ellie get to that point one day too as the series continues
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the first video where Ellie has met with a "boss wall." Now that she knows she can eventually break through and continue, I'm thinking it will probably change her outlook on the rest of the game and maybe all the other games in the future. Also, do you suppose we can get more of her stream of consciousness comments as she is playing. She taught me a new word today. Frenetic: Fast and energetic in a wild & uncontrolled way. 14:02
Good to see you, Jack! For sure, she struggled a bit with The False Knight, but nothing quite like this. I think you're right :) Definitely! I'm still feeling out how much of her live commentary to include relative to my narration. You'd like to hear a bit more from her?
@@Wilson-108 While I think there *would* absolutely be a place for the long-play video of Ellie going through the game and verbally working out her thought process in total, I do NOT believe it would be in replacement of these experiment summation videos. It would be cool to hear her speak her mind more often with how she's going through the process of figuring out the games... *but...* ... there's the problem, that she would get self conscious and start thinking "gotta do X-Y-Z to make a better video," which would inherently make a worse video. It's paradoxical, and I feel like I should just shut my mouth and let you guys do your own thing.
Haha no no I appreciate the feedback! I really value this type of stuff. I've thought about trying out live-streaming with her at some point. Not quite sure how that would work yet, but that could be a fun format change to experiment with!
I'd love to see this turn into a spin off from gf vs game into a full playthrough, im loving the HK series. Hope to see her persevere more, rooting for you!
We're definitely floating that idea! I think it could be cool to pick a game that she plays all the way through while we make other episodes featuring new games. Let me know if there are any other games you'd like to see her try!

SHAW! lol we all do after our first encounter with her, don't worry about it, you did well. Reminded me of my first time.
I definitely died a fair amount my first play through
Thanks to silksong, we all do now...
Are you the Ellie in the video? You did a great job! Your first experience with its frustrations and first-time learnings was the same as mine years ago. I didn't finish the game first time I played. Returned to it a year later and found it more fun after becoming more proficient. Great job!
Honestly, I think most of us would be so down for regular attempts from Ellie to get further into Hollow Knight ngl
Yes, that'd be amazing👍
It would certainly be interesting
I would love to see Ellie finish the game. It’s so cool seeing someone fall in love with yellow knight
That would be great!
Yes!
I would totally want to see Ellie play through all of Hollow Knight
We will definitely mix more parts of Hollow Knight in with other new games! Stay tuned :)
Cool! I love seeing her reactions and seeing how she slowly gains skill!
Path of pain….?

@@Purpurapuripuri Oh God...
I loved hearing Ellie's own commentary in this vid, nice addition to the series
Me too!!
this was the only thing that felt missing in the first one
agreed
Awesome, I'm really happy to hear that!! I think it adds a lot. Ellie's commentary is definitely here to stay :)
Hard agree. It's the classic "show, don't tell" aspect. It's one thing to explain Ellie's frustrations and triumphs, it's another thing entirely to actually hear them
i love how you commentate this like its a nature documentary
Lol, someone made that comparison in another comment yesterday. I laugh every time I think about that!
We'll definitely have to so some more Hollow Knight episodes, although we're getting scary for our next game :)
Thanks for watching, Emmy!!

Would've helped with the moss knight too. I default to spamming VS at him on new saves
Early game, spells are the way to go.
I've seen a lot of playthroughs, and most people tend to forget about spells, or assume they aren't that worth using over saving soul for health.
Good advice! She messed around with it in the first episode, but mostly forgot about it here. I would have reminded her, but honestly, I forgot about it too, haha.
@@tahunuva4254 not only early game, the whole game they are the best damage output
15:52 "the most palpable anger I've ever seen from her..." And then the most adorable sweating ever. I love this series so much
Haha, yeah, she's not really one to get mad lol. So glad you're enjoying the series, thank you for taking the time to leave a kind comment :)
We are proud of you Ellie! Hollow knight is a hard game
Ellie appreciates that, thanks for leaving such a nice comment :)
Very happy you enjoyed :)
We're getting spooky for our next game, but we'll be back to Hollow Knight again at some point soon. Excited to hear your thoughts :)
It's crazy how much some time away can help!
Please let Ellie play Hollow Knight all the way through! She likes it and its fun to see how she approaches it!
We'll definitely continued Hollow Knight :)
Thanks for watching, Brendan!
i think you should let her do more, this is one of my favorite series on youtube. let her go to fungal wastes for an even better boss.
Thanks for coming back for another video, Jaxon! So glad you're enjoying them. We'll definitely make another Hollow Knight episode soon enough :)
I truly think she can beat the mantis lords... I BELIEVEEEE @@Wilson-108
Ohhh yeah, she's got it ;)
Dying hundreds of times to a boss really does make you jaded to death and dangers while exploring.
I appreciate the feedback and am very happy you're enjoining the series :)
Any other games you'd like to see us cover?
Rain world is another great 2d indie game. Just like hollow knight it isn't the kindest to newer players but I'm certain Ellie could handle it!
@awkwardsilence4241 Yes Rain World would most definitely be more well suited to a one off episode, that itself matches the series' spirit imo :)
Great suggestion! I still need to play that one actually
18:44 *moss knight
also, W video, this was a solid improvement from the first one. I do hope this series continues somewhat 🤎
Feels more engaging now that we can actually hear Ellie's commentary and reaction.
Thanks for the correction, and awesome, I'm really glad you liked this one more! I totally agree; Ellie's commentary is definitely here to stay :)
At this point just turn it into a Let's Play 😂
Yes, this! If she wants to play the game, who are you to stop her from playing the damn game? An unbounded Lets Play with commentary would be excellent.
Haha, it sounds like the people want more Hollow Knight!
We'll definitely have to make more parts! Any other games you'd be interested in seeing?

So much respect for the Hornet fight grind. That one gave me a challenge when I started as well, and I already had a good amount of experience with similar games at that point. I knew you could do it, Ellie!
Edit: also, I'm really enjoying this series and particularly the Hollow Knight episodes. Seeing as Ellie seems to be enjoying the game as well, I'd love for this miniseries on the game to continue! :D
Great to see you back, LoZander! Thank you for such a kind comment :)
Yeah, these Hollow Knight episodes have been really fun to make.
I would say thats more of a pogo tutorial, as if you were to find it without knowing about down slash you would just think you need a new ability
There's of course one earlier, in the starting area, but in both cases people that don't know about pogoing may just assume they'll need a skill they don't already have.
I knew about pogoing but didn't realise you could do it on spikes, so I waited until I had dash and double-jump and maybe something else before I made it across that one!
@Goteryup I mean down slashing is also pogoing, wouldnt you agree
That's awesome to hear! Glad the videos are resonating, haha. We'll definitely continue the series! Hope to hear your thoughts on future episodes :)
And for down-hitting there is the grub that you can only get by spike pogo-ing.

That's so interesting, I didn't know that! Thanks for the info, Max, and glad you enjoyed the video :)
I'm so glad you're enjoying them and thank you for taking the time to leave this kind comment :)
Starting a game over can be such an effective way to see how much progress you've made without realizing it.
Oh man, I absolutely adore Celeste!! We will definitely be covering that game in a future episode of the series :) What a classic!
I remember when I first played the game some the harder bosses gave me so much trouble but after some internet scouring and experimenting this is the best strategy I found:
Thank you so much, Roman! Really happy you're enjoying the videos. Any other games you'd like to see Ellie attempt?
@ Keeping with popular games seems a safe bet. I think Slay the Spire would be interesting to see how she chooses to build her deck with the friendly and easy to understand mechanics. Portal would be fun to watch and might help her acclimate to a first-person perspective. I’ve heard Hades is fun, but I haven’t played it and it might be overwhelming. Hope those options help!
Totally, thanks for the suggestions! I think these could be some great videos :)
Would love to see more of her playing hollow knight
Your wish is my command :)
I know its not very popular but id love to see you both continue this series, great video!
Thank you so much, Solstice! I think we'll have to make another part. Any other games you'd like to see us cover?
@Wilson-108 oh, wow. I wasn't expecting a reply, thanks!
I'll definitely remember your name moving forward :)
Awesome recommendations! We'll definitely try to cover some of these. I hope you'll share your thoughts on future episodes!
@Wilson-108 I definitely will, thanks again.
It's nice to see this playthrough continue, also your commentary is very good 👍
Thank you so much, I'm very glad you're digging them!
What's up, Christoph!! Really appreciate that, thank you so much for the kind words! Any other games you'd like to see us cover? :)
@Wilson-108 more Hollow Knight :D
Your wish is my command!
Love to see more Hollow Knight! Nothing beats the magic of the first playthrough. We’d do anything to experience it again.
I think we'll definitely cover HK more in the future, thank Jeffrey! Any other games you'd like to see us cover?
Not that big of a gamer myself haha. I have completed two other games: Minecraft (a sandbox game) and Mindustry (a real-time strategy, factory management, and tower defense game)
It would be cool to see Ellie explore more genres. :)
I think we'll make an episode on Minecraft in the future! Sounds good to me, hope to see you around the comments in future videos :)
I've seen other comments to the same effect, so let me throw my vote behind making Ellie vs Hollow Knight a regular part of the channel! It's such a charming game, and seeing her go through it would be wonderful.
I think we definitely will do that, thanks Dan! Any other games you can think of that you'd be interested in seeing her play?
I'm also playing hollow knight for the first time (now trying to get the king's brand or something like that idk)!! tip for ellie that helped me a lot: most of these bosses are easier to dodge and attack if you try to stay more towards the center of the arena
p.s: terraria is a really fun game with some battles that i’ve found really hard at the start and maybe ellie would like to try also
That's a great tip, I've actually mentioned that to Ellie!! I hope you're enjoying Hollow Knight.
Terraria could be a really cool game to try, thanks for the suggestion, Issa :)
I 100% wanna see more of Ellie experiencing Hollow Knight
More is on the way! Any other games you'd like to see us cover?
There's one room to the far right of the crossroads, which does attempt to have the player figure out they can swing down, and bounce off spikes. It's about 4-5 platforms with spikes covering them, and a grub visible at the end. Which is inviting players to experiment and hopefully figure out how to pogo.
I think it's where most players figure that mechanic out, I like that Hollow Knight respects players enough to leave some things up to you to figure out on your own, with little hints like that grub room.
That's really cool, I wish Ellie had stumbled onto it! Maybe she'll find it if we make another HK video :)
i hope she keeps playing, i want to see her persist through to sealed vessel and possibly Abs Rad or just rad
We're planning to continue the series, I hope you'll join us!
@ AHHHHHHH. Tell her she’s got this and good luck
Glad you're continuing Hollow Knight! Subscribed for more of this game 👍
Thanks very much for watching, Isaiah! More Hollow Knight to come :)
Any other games you'd like to see us cover?
@@Wilson-108 BotW? That game is generally a good game for non-gamers, and I have plenty of friends that got into gaming starting with BotW.
@@ninpro188 For sure, we'll definitely have to hit that one in the future!
Watching this make me remember my old playthrough, it take me almost a month for my first p5 run getting stuck in absrad, and because each run is almost 40 minutes i can only do 2-3 run each day before i burn out, top it of that i not even consistency able to reach absrad just fuel my frustrations even more, but when i finally beat it the joy I feel through is not like any other
Ohhh yeah, all the frustration is worth it when you get to enjoy the feeling of victory :)
tbh in Ellie fight with Hornet the best advice is jump on top of her and hit underneath, hitting upwards and underneath is mostly the key for almost all bosses, thats what i got from my 6 hours gameplay
They're not mantis kniiiiightsss, thats a very different thinggggg
Lol, I'm definitely kicking myself for that mistake!
The new HK player classic of forgotten spells lol😂loved to see the progress and would enjoy more of this. A heal/spell balance would be my biggest advice for her. (Plus congrats on defeating hornet)
Yup, spells should be very helpful for her! We'll definitely make additional HK epodes! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :)
I think that forgetting about vengeful spirit after coming back is pretty huge.
Helps a lot with Hornet.
Crossroads being so long ingrains Nail and Heal as the most important things.
For sure, she's using Vengeful Spirit more as we're filming part 3!
She's gonna get PTSD from Hornet Sentinel
Having beaten Hollow Knight myself I nowadays feel like Hornet moves in slow motion and I'd like to see Ellie get to that point one day too as the series continues
That's really cool, I think she'll get a lot better as we continue to play!
I got so invested in the hornet fight I burned my toast
Hahaha, that's my favorite comment of the day!
I think you're right :)
Definitely!
*but...*
... there's the problem, that she would get self conscious and start thinking "gotta do X-Y-Z to make a better video," which would inherently make a worse video.
