If you’re watching this video, I’m guessing that you’re fond of playing video games. Maybe you even call yourself a gamer. Is Vampire Survivors A $5 Masterpiece?
มุมมอง 8742 หลายเดือนก่อน
Vampire Survivors seems to have taken the gaming world by storm over the last couple of years on pretty much every platform expect for the Playstation. A few weeks ago, though, that issue was finally remedied and for just $5, I figured that it was time to give this Draculion sensation a spin. So, grab a snack, some garlic perhaps and join me for an appropriately abbreviated, straightforward vid...
A Defense of "Walking Simulators"
มุมมอง 3522 หลายเดือนก่อน
I’m not sure exactly where the term “walking simulator” originated, but it’s used to describe a sub genre of video game that’s predicated upon slowly maneuvering your way through an environment, typically in first person. Walking Sims are traditionally light on mechanics such as combat or character progression, opting instead to place the emphasis on narrative and discovery. Unfortunately, the ...
Why Do We Play Video Games?

Shortly after I started college, I began seeing a therapist to help me manage my anxiety. During an early session, my therapist asked me what I liked to do for fun. I told him that I liked to play video games, which is typically what I did in my free time. This answer elicited a smirk my from therapist. When I questioned him, he was quick to theorize that video games were an excuse for me to av...
When Is A Game Too Hard?
มุมมอง 7463 หลายเดือนก่อน
Since the birth of the medium, video games have been challenging. Really challenging, in fact. I mean, they kind of had to be. If there’s no challenge, there’s no way to lose and ultimately, loss was the motivator to pop in another quarter. As home consoles become more ubiquitous, loss was the motivator that forced you to pick the controller back up and try again after stewing in your frustrati...
The Power of Time in Video Games
มุมมอง 2944 หลายเดือนก่อน
I recently played through a game called Deathloop and it’s got me thinking about time. Typically, video games permit the player to progress at their own pace. You can explore a vast open world or delve deeply into a dungeon, without any fear of a timer reaching zero. Sometimes, though, developers opt to add a little more pressure. The implementation of some kind of time mechanic can affect a ga...
The Golden Age Of Licensed Games

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been playing through Hogwarts Legacy, the latest in a long list of games that have been adapted from the Harry Potter series. For about as long as there have been video games, there have been titles based upon existing properties. With the occasional, refreshing exception, most of these games been have pretty bad. But, in more recent years, something seems to...
The Power Of Movement In Games
มุมมอง 1.4K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
I recently played through a game called Jusant and it’s got me thinking about movement. No matter how far back into the medium you dig, movement persists as one of the most important factors of a video game, from platformers to shooters. The momentum and motion of the player character often separates the good from the great, so it seemed appropriate to focus this video on the mechanics of movem...

Remember Days Gone? Incredibly, as of the creation of this video, it’s been almost exactly half a decade since it originally released. After many years in development, the pressure was high for Bend to drop a game that made good on Sony’s huge financial investment. When it was final...

The Most Unique Game I've Played In 2023
I think i had basically the same experience playing this, i found the same boss first how the heck do you find the beast first lol. Thanks for more of this cool concept! Hoping these keep coming!
another well done video, I would love to see a part 2 of this
It’s very fun to see this type of content. Normally streamers have chat or Fextra backing them up. But this takes me back to my very first walk through Lordran.
Please play the next game together where you can't backseat her but at least give hints and help her in what she wants to do. I'd like to see her enjoy the souls games
Hey Ellie,if there is nothing to lose ,just got for a desperation run or a loot run. Just run, don't fight .maybe you pick up some good items or open up some good shortcuts
man you are one lucky guy
Ellie doing a no circle ⭕️ button challenge run 😂
Dark souls 3 next?
I think the more linear Level design will enable her to make more progress
I'm 10 minutes into the video and haven't seen a single dodge roll
please tell me we're doing Elden Ring
Let's go Ellie!!!
Really enjoying this series!! It’s game over for Papa Gauc once Ellie finds that dodge button. :)
Father Gascoigne is easier for me as a first boss since I khow how to parry but my fear is that she will never learn how to dodge
I think she'll get it down if she keeps playing! Parrying is still tough, even for me. Something about parrying is always a struggle for me in almost any game it seems, I'm not sure why...
I wish i could play games with my girlfriend too😂 Tho i currently have none
Haha, you'll find one in due time, my friend :)
Another well executed video. You were right, I was not disappointed with the choice of game haha. This series is really enlightening in just how much we -- those of us familiar with video games -- take for granted when it comes to our past experiences. I've been playing video games since I was young and so even though each game is different, there are a lot of general game skills and knowledge that translates from one game to another. We saw this with how much Ellie has improved since playing dark souls. I think in the next game she will start dodging! Such a fun series. Cheers you guys.
Good, I'm so glad to hear that! I figured you'd dig it, haha. These have been sooo interesting to make. I never realized how much I loved studying someone's gameplay until I gave these videos a try. I'm really intrigued to see how she approaches other games and series in different genres. So many game to choose from... hope to hear your thoughts on future entries!
@@Wilson-108 I was thinking a similar thing! Like how would a linear, story game like The Last of Us go? Or an FPS or open world game? So many options for sure!
Bloodborne has to be my favorite game, maybe tied with Elden Ring, but I love the aesthetic and story of Bloodborne so much. I'm honestly really impressed by Ellie's progression and how much she learned. She made some clever connections and discoveries that allowed her to understand the game philosophy of FromSoftware much better than ever before. You can tell she plays much more observantly, and makes much more conscious and thought out decisions, which ultimately made her experience much better. That level of progression and understanding is really impressive! It's great that Ellie was able to understand some of the things that make FromSoft games so interesting and enjoyable. It may not be what she's used to, but she's picking it up surprisingly well! I think this was a very intriguing video, I absolutely loved watching this. You have to be one of the most underrated youtubers I can think of, cause this was very well put together. Much respect to you for your work and please do keep it up!👏🏻
Thank you so much, Zander!! I think BB is probably my favorite From title I've played so far (have yet to play Elden Ring, though). The world is just incredible and I always love the souls-like progression. I am too! She's learned a lot and is clearly adapting the more that she plays. It makes me interested to see her try different genres with different mechanics to see how she would approach different situations. I'm also curious to see if she'd continue to have more fun with a game like Bloodborne if she were to stick with it. I really can't tell you how much I appreciate the kind words. They're incredibly motivating! Many more videos to come, thanks so much for the support :)
I want to play Minecraft or possibly Roblox with Ellie
I'll submit your request and see what she says :)
Another one!! Are trying to turn your girlfriend into an Ex-girfriend? That would be a very sad history. Let's hope we get an episode 3 and 4 and many others or I will cry.
Haha, that would be very sad indeed :( Hopefully she'll tolerate some more episodes without wanting to break up with me!
Aahhhh yes. I can remember how good it felt the first time I "got gud".
Ohhh yeah baby, nothin' compares to gittin' gud :)
I enjoy these. It would be cool to see her continue on with both DS1 and BB. BB was my second FromSoft game, and where I really felt it click. After, I returned to DS3, which was my first, and had a much easier time with it.
Thanks very much, I'm glad you're digging 'em! Definitely. I want to throw a lot of different games at her to keep things interesting for everyone, but I also think returning to certain games would be fun, too. Maybe I'll put up a poll after we've covered a few games for people to vote on which one they'd most like to see again. Let me know if there are other games you'd like to see!
Okay this Ellie girl is really growing on me
I wasn't sure at first, but, idk, she seems pretty cool
I wonder if Ellie would be down for a round 2 but this time with your help! Let's be honest, we've all played Dark Souls and have used some sort of guide after a while.
Absolutely, I think that could be a lot of fun! I'm thinking about creating a follow up to certain games in this series where I completely open myself up as a resource and answer any question that she has. Could be an interesting twist on the formula!
I really wish you'd add her live voice reactions to certain things if she said anything interesting to say or give her time at the end of the video to give her thoughts
I'm definitely planning to! I would have tried to figure it out for this video, but I've been moving and couldn't make it happen. Stay tuned... :)
20:30 both the cleric beast and Gascoigne can be the first boss you fight but cleric beast is optional and Gascoigne isn't.
Cleric Beast is only optional if you choose to kill Blood Starved Beast. One of the two has to die to get to Vicar Amelia.
Ah, that's interesting, didn't know that! I've only played through BB once, although this made me feel tempted to play through again...
I just finished bloodborne this week for the first time. Your video today is like a prize, thank you sir
Did u play the dlc?
Congrats!! Happy to be of service, thanks for watching :)
Oh man, Old Hunters was awesome! Loved the environments in that game. Killer DLC.
Dark Souls? Check. Bloodborne? Check. Sekiro.... 👀 Also, if you DO do another video, why not record yours and her voice conversations whilst playing so we can hear the frustration and thoughts? 👀
Oh man, wouldn't that be a fun one... I haven't even played Sekiro cause I'm too scared, lol. But I think that would actually make it even more interesting! And for sure! I've been moving this past week but now that I'm settled I want to work out capturing at least some audio of her, if not video too :)
@Wilson-108 face your fears Wilson . I believe in you!
The way I see it is if you can beat the Taurus demon you beat the bell gargoyles. If you can beat the bell gargoyles you can beat Quelaag. If you can beat Quelaag you can beat O and Smo. And if you can beat O and Smo you can beat the game. So what I'm saying is Ellie is one boss away from being able to beat the game.
Haha, I like this logic, Everett! I do think that once you get over that initial "hump", things do start to get easier. Maybe I can convince Ellie to jump back in someday :)
Ladies, find you a man who only needs one bathroom break
LOL, my only redeeming quality
love Vampire Survivors
It's quite fun! I need to go back and play more of it.
she refuses to even roll lmao
please make her play the whole game.
"I let my Girlfriend play Dark Souls with no weapons"
Now *that* would be an interesting video...
Great video! It was a very interesting perspective to see. Dark Souls 1 changed how I view and play video games, and even how I view life. It's a tough and sometimes depressing game, but it seems Ellie made quite some progress in the first 5 hours. Pretty sure this amount of progress took me much longer.
Thanks so much, Zander! I really appreciate the kind words. I think it's been a transformative game for a lot of people. She did a really solid job and watching this video in the context of the *next* video (which should be done in a couple of days), is even more interesting... Would love to hear your thoughts if you get around to watching the next one!
@Wilson-108 I will certainly be watching the next video. I just noticed you have just under 3k subs. This is shocking to me, cause from the quality of the video, I thought you had at least a couple 100k. Consider this a compliment in that case. I just subscribed cause I'm very interested in your videos. Keep up the good work!💪🏻
I think some more context about what Ellie's played would have helped. At the start it almost sounds like she's only played Minesweeper, but then at the end you say that she's mainly played linear action games and show footage from Uncharted. To me that sounds like a #realgamer, but maybe the standards have been raised since my day.
That's a good point, I hadn't thought of that! The script for the next video has already been recorded, but maybe I can provide some more context in a future video. Thanks for the suggestion :)
She drank estus on full hp I can relate. It should be coded in to not heal when hp is full (optional) since sometimes people want to waste estus for example in pvp people show they used all healing down. It is really interesting to see people not used to gaming play games.
Haha, I've been there too! That's a terrible feeling when you accidentally do that. That would be a huge QOL improvement. It really is! Let me know if there are any particular games you'd like to her try in the future :)
Seems like you are stuck in the mentality that the only legitimate way of playing a game is blind and without outside help. A relatively recent and unfortunate innovation. Just tell her.
But yeah, souls game menus are garbage, no denying that.
Oh no, I don't think that at all! Quite the opposite. The point of this video, though, is to see how a game communicates information to an unfamiliar player. It's incumbent on the game to deliver, within the context of this video. Under normal circumstances, I'd happily provide tips and answer questions :)
At which hour thee loveth someone v'ry dearly, thee maketh those folk playeth dark souls! loveth truly hurts!
Nothin' like a Dark Souls love!
Dark Souls isn't made for "players." It's made for gamers.
A valid perspective, I think many would agree with that!
@@Wilson-108 I think your video shows that perfectly. Sometimes we forget how many things we figure out because we played 100s of games before some janky one with weird menus and whatnot.
Very true, it's easy to forget just how much you pick up after playing so many games...
Like some other guy said, if she is willingly, make a part 2 where she can ask within reason, to feel more the experience of "someone who plays a game first/second time, now with someone who knows the game", i guess we can conclude interesting things from the interaction, perceptions, etc
Yup, that's a really solid idea and definitely something we may do in the future! Let me know if there are any other games you're interested in seeing her play :)
What was your hypothesis for this experiment? Have you thought about repeating it with Elden Ring?
I should probably stop using the rem "experiment" since it wasn't *technically* an experiment, haha, but yes! I would definitely like to repeat it with Elden Ring in the future. We've got a different From Software game coming up in the next video. I hope you'll join for that!
@wilson-108 I’m looking forward to it
Disappointed, thought this was a lore analysis between dark souls and your girlfriend
Well now, you've just provided me with an amazing video idea...
"played methodically" until you get frustrated at a boss later on and learn the secret art of running past everything
Haha, the true pro strategy!
You owe her a ludicrously expensive dinner for putting her through this experiment with no help.
And why you criticizing your gf more than the pedagogy of the game?
I agree! I'll let her pick the spot :)
She’s just like me fr
I think many can relate!
I would love to see a sequel to this where she was simply allowed to ask questions. You wouldn’t be forcing her to do anything, but something like that could make it a lot easier on her end
I think that's a very interesting idea. We may do something like that in the future, stay tuned!
@ I absolutely will!
