  • CHRISTOPHER REEVE RARELY SEEN 1980 TV INTERVIEW - PLEASE SUBSCRIBE - IT'S FREE)
In 1978 a young New York actor by the name of Christopher Reeve won a movie role that would change for ever his career and life.
At the time, Chris had a few television and film credits and had co-starred opposite Katherine Hepburn in a Broadway play.
He had won the dual role of Clark Kent and Superman in the first of what would be a series of big-screen, special effects movies to bring to life the comic-strip hero who came, as baby, from the planet Krypton.
Superman was faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.
Quite a challenge, even for an actor with the help of state-of-the-art special effects.
To no one’s surprise Superman The Movie was a smash worldwide hit. And Chris was a superstar!
Shortly after he completed the second film, in 1980, I went to New York to chat to him…and find out how he was coping with the instant global fame…and just how serious was his approach to bringing a super-hero comic-strip character to life.
By the way, the interview took place in Chris’s, then, new duplex apartment just off Central Park in New York.
When I turned up with cameraman David Etherton, Chris opened the door in an old shirt, jeans turned half way up his legs, a growing beard…and a half-full glass of wine.
The PR lady had forgotten to ring and remind him of the interview.
But, the true professional that he was, Chris said “hang on a few minutes while I have shower”….and soon re-appeared for our chat.
I interviewed him twice more…at the Cannes Film Festival for The Bostonians and then Switching Channels.
Like most people, I was saddened to hear of his accident, but shattered when I heard that he had died.
Chris was a truly unforgettable human being. I was honored to have spent time with him.

Henry Cavill was good. Christopher Reeve was MAJESTIC! Reeve was an Oscar-worthy actor, and he’s the ONLY man, who’s ever truly made his Clark and Superman very DISTINCT from each other, it’s absolutely amazing to see! Henry had the muscles, Reeve had everything else. Reeve was so good, that I can still watch Superman 4 and smile.. all. because. of. him!

I've never seen this before. Totally different than I expected. A lot of that has to do with the pace of talking, when he answers, he doesn't equivocate at all, he has specific things to say and he says them without any umms and ahhs. It borders on the vibe of stern confidence, and I guess the reason I wasn't expecting this is that I expected him to have mannerisms more like Superman and Clark. Which is a real short changing of his acting ability. So it's quite a privilege to see this side to him, this normal life side to him, it's a lot less mild than I'd imagined.

A really miss Chris, brilliant actor and such a great guy and very down to earth gent. I often wonder what if Chris never got on that horse on a fateful day, would he probably still be with us today? Almost an impossible question although we all know that Christopher Reeve loved horse riding! Sadly life is full of many what if's.
Same goes for Margot Kidder who played Louis Lane who sadly passed away in 2018 who was somewhat of an activist upto her lattar years. Really sad to think the duo are no longer with us!
One thing is for sure as many of the actor's who've played Superman after Chris will all testify am sure especially Henry Cavill and that is that Christopher was their main motivational on-screen inspiration for this particular kind of role. No doubt extremely difficult it was too to pull it off but as far as cast directing goes am sure Chris would be very pleased by Henry Cavill's portrayal of Clark Kent by bringing the character upto the modern age! But there's one thing we can all say for certainty am sure and that is they could all look upto Christopher (no pun intended) in how best to express the Superman character along with his alter ego Clark Kent!

He didn't have much flattering things to say, thinking Brando was unprofessional. I wish you had interviewed him for Superman III later. I know he strongly disliked the script but did the movie anyway. I wonder why considering how adamant he is here that the writing would need to be good.

    THE BEST SUPERMAN

He was an ambitious and perfectionist man. His role power was mechanical. His silly hobbies were the end of him. What I loved though. Superman was the idol movie of my youth. He came and went from the fucking world.

If you compare the interview with some of his later interviews you can see how he mellowed out. I can see how Margot Kidder explained how he changed after his injury.

What happened to him horse riding is beyond tragic 😢. It was a horrible destiny for him . Presumably he did get a percentage of the profits from Superman 3 .

He got laughs from me with his improvised banter with Margot Kidder; I don’t know if he learned it being friends with Robin Williams, or if their shared sense of humor helped make them such great friends.

If I were a billionaire, I'd make a 1:1 scale Christopher Reeves superman and make it float in space near the Earth's orbit where people can see on a telescope because superman is a symbol of good defeating evil.

In the Superman script, it's true that the line about Superman telling Lois he can't see through lead isn't in there. He just says he can 'pretty much' see through anything and moves on to the next question. Lex only deduces Superman can't see through lead because of a scene where Superman has to rip down multiple lead doors to find the poison gas pellet Luthor claims he planted. Because Superman tells it to Lois in the interview, Lex is able to read that fact in the newspaper, so the scene with the doors wasn't necessary. A lot of the balcony conversation is in the script though. I'm not sure offhand without rewatching it what else might have been improvised.

I tell ya for my generation at least the closest thing to a brat actor who played Superman was maybe Tyler Hoechlin of TV's Superman And Lois. But I think later on he realized the importance of image of an actor when it came to the role and never heard about any antics.after that. Reeve as you can tell an amazing, intelligent guy who even though he became.typcast still tried some memorable roles. Some really against type. Deathtrap.whwrw of all things he played Michael Caine's lover. Monsignor, Remains of the Day, Great Escape 2, and of course one of his most revered for fans outside of Supes Somewhere In Time. Brandon Routh great down home likeable Midwestern guy who I personally think did a great homage to Reeve's Clark Kent portrayal even more . Henry Cavill one of the greatest embodiments physically of the character despite it mostly being written darkly and an underwritten Kent. Cavil actually seems to legitimately not only love playing the character even though him being Welsh you would think he wouldn't be able to fully grasp it's place in the zeitgeist. But also respect the DC lore and the importance of getting Superman right these days. I think we'll see him play Superman in one way or another again, maybe even to produce his own fillm. As of late from what I can tell of David Corenswet the new guy, very good actor, haven't seen any interviews but from what Ive heard he wants to like James Gunn see a return to a more traditonal version. As for Tom Welling he was good in the I guess you can say alternate Superman universe physically but he just never was able to emote as good as the other actors and make you walk that proverbial mile in Supes shoes (boots) like the others.
