Wow, what an interview! I have never heard him speak this long. Also before he was injured. He is informative, funny and articulate. I mostly saw him as Superman. I am sorry he is gone. Rip. Cavett was pretty good. Thanks utube
"There's a terrible cliché to assume about the handicapped, which is that it's all doom and gloom and despair. Far from it - it's exactly the opposite... Someone who is handicapped does not display any self pity-ever-in public. It's all about the future, the possibilities, and conquering. And when I think of what those people can do with what they've got versus the way we take ourselves so damn for granted, it opened my eyes to something I never would have known about." Impossible to imagine how salient these words would be just 14 short years later. Bless you, Chris, and thank you for all you gave the world!
The person above doesn’t know about karma, and that disability strikes just about everyone if they live long enough. Have fun “acting” when you’re 90, dude. You’ll remember that you wrote this.
I always really liked him as an actor, being a teenager in the 80’s of course I mainly knew him as Superman. But after watching this interview, that brought me to tears a few times, I have so much respect for him. He was such a classy person. Obviously he had it all; looks, talent and smarts.
Superman is my number one movie and Chris was my hero growing up. He became even more of my hero after his accident as he was determined to walk again. They picked the right man to play Superman. When hes talking about the disabled man that lost his legs and his positive attitude it gave me chills as he was in a way talking about his future which was prophetic. Wow. Great guy.
*Christopher Reeve was a terribly underrated actor. The highfalutin "film critics" savaged almost everything he was in--except the "Superman" franchise. "Somewhere in Time" and "Deathtrap were both excellent!*
This is frightening that he's talking of all these troubles of people, and understanding it all, wanted to really understand people, and we all know how he himself ended up. He was such a groovy guy.
He was great in Deathtrap with Michael Caine. But he was absolutely brilliant in Superman 1 and 2. Romantic comedic heroic. Absolute magic ! Listen to his desert island discs podcast on bbc radio . 🎵🎶can you read my mind 🎵🎶
He was such a great actor too. Superman im glad people notice how talented to play 3 roles at once. Esp noticed in the restored brando scenes he s superman clark & cal el. He has a regal very proper talk w/ jor el as clark its not just the glasses his voice his slouching hes so good. Superman of course confident assertive great posture etc. He also plays romance so well. He was offered what became big hits american giggolo & body heat.
Wow that was crazy him saying paraplegic at the start. Theirs also an interview reeve did where brando gave him advice & said " I did viva Zapata & they put me on a horse & it threw me off into the dirt head first. So dont do crazy stunts or you will wind up in a wheelchair " my mouth was wide open. Like holy shit. Brando said about a horse throwing him on his head & winding up in a wheelchair. That is too ominous. Listening him talk about disabled people was crazy & he is so young handsome & full of life here. Listening to him talk about his baby son at the end was really sweet.
Natalie Panaro Stack Hello!! Can you Tell me what he says at the end? When he talks about cigarretes and dope I think, I understand some parts. Thanks a lot
Amazing. He played two roles as a man who was no longer able to walk. The foreshadowing is disturbing. Eerie. He was a brave person. So many people are, but he was among them and fought. ❤
Chris was wearing this same tie a year later when he did his appearance on Letterman. 😄👍 "Golly gee, Miss Lane. Why would anyone throw away a perfectly good tie?"
Christopher Reeve will always be Superman, just like Sean Connery will always be James Bond, Mark Hamill will always be Luke Skywalker, Robert Downey Jr will always be Iron Man, William Shatner as Capain Kirk, Roddy McDowall - Planet of the Apes etc.... It's positive. It means that you made a huge Impression on the audience. You were loved.
I'm not sure about that, i think Daniel Craig and Henry Cavill have put a big stamp on those roles, certainly for a newer generation they probably are those parts now
Richard Alva Cavett (/ˈkævɪt/; born November 19, 1936) is an American television personality and former talk show host. He appeared regularly on nationally broadcast television in the United States for five decades, from the 1960s through the 2000s.
There are similarities in all forms of fandom. Those who follow soaps. Those who follow wrestling. Kids who watch cartoons. Fans who watch sports. Its always been an escape from reality that some go beyond the grasp of entertainment. The opposite end of the spectrum is also the same whether actor, entertainer, or sport star. What they portray to those who follow dosent define you
Christopher Reeve Portrayed Superman in the Movies and Helen Slater Portrayed Supergirl from 1984 Movie Spin-off Before Melendy Britt voiced She-Ra in the Secret of the Sword (1985) and Terri Hawkes and Stephanie Sheh Voiced Sailor Moon in anime Movies until Brandon Routh return Superman in Superman Returns (2006) with Red Boots and Red Cape
It's interesting he keeps mentioning how they used to go to see movies to see a certain actor but by then they rather were going to see the movie itself, since in the 80s it actually went right back to how it was prior to that where you went to see a 'Bruce Willis' movie, a 'Tom Cruise' movie etc. And of course now, and basically since about 2010 onwards we have gone back to seeing a movie rather than going to see a movie star. We'll go to see Avengers to see those superheroes, we won't go and see a 'Robert Downey Jr' movie.
I don't see much of a physical similarity. But more importantly, Reeve was, by all reports, a person who never let fame go to his head. Cruise, on the other hand, is a jerk. (And I don't mean this from what I've heard from the media. Rather, a friend of mine has been in one of Cruise's pictures, and Cruise made a special point of snubbing all of the "B-Class Actors" and only hobnobbed with the "A-Listers.')
Its great how those scenes with Marlon Brando that were cut from Superman 2 are now viewable on the DVD of "Superman 2 The Richard Donner Cut". Possibly on TH-cam too. They should have kept them in, they were way more emotional then what was released, no disrespect to the late Susannah York (Superman's Mum in the films)
How ironic speaking about, having empathy for those who had serious disabilities to finish his life as he eventually did. Tremendous respect for him
Wow, what an interview! I have never heard him speak this long. Also before he was injured. He is informative, funny and articulate. I mostly saw him as Superman. I am sorry he is gone. Rip. Cavett was pretty good. Thanks utube
Damn, he was really Superman, he's got the moral and spirit

Brett Mitchell, I want you to know that Christopher Reeve was never paralyzed. In fact, he was acting.
You're a sick man

Yes he was such a hero inside and outside the screen

Street Smart was another gem
@@DMalltheway Yes. I've only seen it once, but was struck by Morgan Freeman's character threatening to gut Reeve's callow reporter.
@@519djw6 Those two were amazing together
I dare say he's even more underrated than you even realize.
I really liked Chris in Somewhere In Time. I liked Plummer's performances better as good guys rather than villains generally...
Not just the opening bit, but through the interview, very prophetic...
He had lots of time to prepare for the final act.
@@cellardoor199991 But also he learned from the vet who lost his legs and didnt show it in public and was determined to walk again. My hero
I love you Christipher i just LOVE you
He seems down to earth, unlike todays celebrities.
Yeah he was a trained stage actor first
Yah it's true Christopher Reeves his a good man and down to earth 😊
He was really humble and a truly artist what a soul ❤
Insane that he wasn’t even 30 years old here. He had the maturity of a 40 year old.
This is frightening that he's talking of all these troubles of people, and understanding it all, wanted to really understand people, and we all know how he himself ended up. He was such a groovy guy.
Lovely guy
It breaks my heart he was such an angel
Seemed like such a good normal guy who had everything going for him. Scary the whole paraplegic precursor.
for sure... that was kind of ironic
He was great in Deathtrap with Michael Caine.
But he was absolutely brilliant in Superman 1 and 2.
Romantic comedic heroic.
Absolute magic !
Listen to his desert island discs podcast on bbc radio .
🎵🎶can you read my mind 🎵🎶
Desert island disc podcast showed his range in life. He did so much stuff. His real life is more interesting than his professional.
And he became the real Superman. God bless him. Never to be forgotten.

This makes me uncomfourtable to listen to him talk about being disabled. How eerie.
He played a paraplegic in the last movie he did before he actually became one, now that's eerie.
Great interview. Thanks for recording, keeping and sharing it here. Well enjoyed that 🖖
Yes !❤
Christopher Reeve is a very fascinating man. He has a very succinct way of speaking.
You waited 10 long years for this reply.

Reliving your childhood with your child is wonderful. I'm doing that now xxxxx
14 months old is still a baby! I love what Chris Reeve shares about adults and the wonder of his baby at about 22 minutes in.
Amazing. He played two roles as a man who was no longer able to walk. The foreshadowing is disturbing. Eerie. He was a brave person. So many people are, but he was among them and fought. ❤

6’4 210-225lbs. A real Superman, no drugs needed.

18:23 thanks to the Donner cut we get to see those amazing scenes and what the Superman 2 would of been.
What a legend.

Can you imagine what he may have contributed to society if he hadn't chose acting?
"Take it easy, girls!"
Thanks :)

He seemed like a fascinating guy. He would not have made it in today's movie industry. He reminds a little of Chris Evans.
did he say that superman is a paraplegic???? ouch
knownpleasures Hehe. He did, indeed.
knownpleasures sad and prophetic!
Forshadowing
I was going to say the same thing. It’s scary hearing that
Bi-lateral amputee

Chris forgot to shave before this program was taped.
Or perhaps he chose not to.
be for a reason
so well spoken.....little did he know in 14 years, he would be profoundly paralyzed
He talks about being disabled and type cast before it happened!!!!
"Death trap is an anagram for hated part." How Rosemary' Baby of him.
8:57 prophetic
Not really. Just a character part he performed. If he had never taken up horse back riding and got into an accident, it wouldn't be prophetic.
He makes a joke about Superman being paraplegic in 1981? There’s something here in the Matrix that I don’t understand.
Does Chris look simular to Tom Cruise, because of his facial resemblance?
Sallie Nennig I thought the same thing!

I see the resemblance to Tom Cruise. He also reminds me of Christian Bale.
I see nothing but Brandon Routh ironically...
Chris Reevs was very fresh for that interview but the host was too encapsulated
[ 11:51 ] Tony Schmony, Oscar Schmoscar😊
Shouldn't have said that word, Dick. "Paraplegic" on the day Christopher Reeve appeared on your show.
talk about foreshadowing....
He thought they're be feminists all over the place!
Superman may not have been a homosexual paraplegic but he was a bisexual quadratic 🤐
Did he just say what I thought he said at the beginning ?
0:28
8:14
Ironic he mentioned being disabled
Propactor
Wait...did he say superman was a Paraplegic?
Yes.
8:08 What are they talking about? What movie?
The Fifth of July. Broadway play that took place in 1980.
skatological what?
I loved how he mentioned "Breaker Morant". That's a brilliant film from that time.
