Fasting is one of the hottest topics at the moment and I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr Mindy Pelz to dive into this fascinating area.
Like I always say to people, fasting is potentially a phenomenal, multifunctional tool that we can use to improve our immune system and our metabolic health. But the dose of fasting, the method of fasting and whether fasting is at all appropriate if you have a pre-existing condition, are all questions that are very hard to answer.
Adding further complexity to the decision of how and when to fast, is the menstrual cycle. For years Mindy has been educating 1000s of women online on how to make the best use of this tool with the consideration of their shifting hormones.
We go into a lot of detail today, but as ever there are so many more things that we need to discuss and will probably have to do a part 2 at some point in the future.
Do check out Mindy’s fabulous book, “Fast like a Girl”, I’ve been recommending it to everyone and it’s a great resource for anyone interested in fasting as a tool for health.
We also talk about some caveats of fasting and who fasting is NOT for in this episode. This is especially the case for anyone pregnant, breastfeeding or who has a history of eating disorders.

14+ hours into my first 17 hour fast. Thank you for the info.
We are fearfully and wonderfully made. God is a great designer..
You are so right, we are made in the image of God and you can't be more perfect than that to have a start in life❤

Happy Sunday
just turned 60...finally age and many years of " modern living" is catching up with me...she arrived in my life like a saving grace. Thank you! It should be lovingly mandatory reading to all.
The longest I used go without eating was when I was asleep. Now I never eat breakfast, sometimes no lunch.on the days I skip lunch the ketone strips are purple. It seems to make a real difference.
I am already seeing a difference …. Years ago I was 150 by walking 2 miles to school and back and eating so so … as soon as I stopped walking and drove I the burbs I started to pack in pounds … my body had a set point and it was confused at my sudden drop in 2 miles a day
I started following Dr Pelz and she just made soooo much sense out of it all ….
This is what I do ( I will say giving up pasta as an Italian is hard !!)
I mix up my fasting sometimes 8:16 sometimes 4: 20
I only eat in that designated window
I only eat Whole Foods and 150 grams of protein since my goal is 150 lbs
I drink water black coffee
Green tea
I eat 2 sometimes 3 meals a day in that window
I don’t count calories
I do eat a small avacado a day …
I walk but not miles and miles I don’t do it to lose necessarily but for heart health
I lift weights but free weights squats no gym just you tube 2 3 days a week
I lost 20 lbs
I appreciate this distillation of knowledge, I feel frustrated that I can't feel my body cycles, I have ignored my body and its cycles all of my life, dieted, if it worked I would be a supermodel, I am so upset and angry at doctors who even today dismiss me. I have been forced to 'know' MORE than my doctors about nutrition!. Taking a deep calming breath, thank you all
Don’t waste anymore time being angry, use that energy to master how you can have your body work well for you. Buy the book, depending on how you learn but the audiobook too, learn to fast and live the best life you can for yourself. You won’t regret it❤
It's very sad but millions of women all around the world can resonate with it I'm afraid🥲 myself included...
We really do need to change that situation and talk about those topics as much as it possible.
Every form of fasting will require a regular bowel cleansing: So, take at least every second day early in the morning on an empty stomach 1 tablespoon (15 ml) castor oil in order to excrete not only the waste in your intestines but further to eliminate all the toxins deposed in your body (methylmercury!) via the liver too.
I seriously want to understand how this plays out post menopause.
I looked at Dr Mindy's channel, and her advice seems sound for hormonal balance after menopause based on my last 6 years of research. I'm not an expert, just trying to be helpful. Ps, I'm 4 years post menopause. That's why I've been doing the searching.
It appears to be the subject of the book she's writing now.
@@grandwizardnoticer8975 thank God!
I don’t think humans were ever meant to walk about eating food all day. Too many fast food outlets supplying poor quality food and sugar laden drinks, people have become gluttons I’m afraid , digging their graves with their teeth
Been on this intermittent fasting for years now. And have been in and out with the 1 meal a day fast. But I really been touching on this 1 meal a day dinner to dinner and man my body, mind clarity, energy, it’s just so different. I look at things differently and don’t get so worked up, I feel really chill and relaxed it’s like my mind is meditating and peaceful 24 hours
Been doing the same except for few days ago did a 48hr fast n now I'm on hr 40 of a 72 hr fast..seems crazy but feels like it's way ezr more you fast.
Love these videos/podcasts about fasting. I began my fasting lifestyle just over a month ago and I’m loving it, my body loves it. So please keep them coming they are so helpful 😊
At 74 I'm still learning how to treat my body. I'm not overweight, but I need to lose some belly fat. Loved this whole discussion with Dr. Mindy. I just bought her book. Glad I caught her on this video. May you both continue to bring this vital information to the general public.
Any suggestion? I am 47 and same - 62.5 kg and want to lose fat - 3-4 kg. I cant nothing works!
@@user-ru1jt3ve8u I don't know what you've tried already that didn't work for you, but if you haven't already I'd suggest reading/listening to Professor Tim Noakes and following his dietary advice. He basically suggests increasing your (natural/healthy) fat intake and drastically decreasing your carbohydrate intake. After several years of frustrating post-menopausal weight creep, that is what worked for me. Without feeling hungry or deprived, I lost the annoying belly fat I'd put on and have more energy. I've used that energy to get back into weight lifting (I just use dumbbells at home) and the resistance training has restored the muscle I'd lost from sarcopenia. I actually feel (and look) better than I did before menopause.
When I first tried intermittent fasting a few years ago, it didn't work for me. I felt like I was getting weaker and compromising muscle each time I fasted for more than 12-14 hours. Since increasing my fat and meat consumption, I am having no problem with intermittent fasting. I did my first 24 hour fast this week and it was easier than I'd anticipated. I'm at a healthy BMI so am not looking to lose fat at this point, just to stay healthy and keep my immune system (and muscles) strong as I age. Hope this helps 🙏
@u1jt3ve8u - For what it's worth. 55year old guy, type 2 diabetes, hbp and a bunch of other issues. Off course, inclusive overweight. Intermittent fasting and full carnivore diet. I'll shortcut it to "MIRACLE"!
In spite of writing this with a big smile, I'm not kidding. ;-)
PS: BTW fasting has among others one enormous advantage. You can start right now, any time any day, no prescriptions medicines, etc. Quick, easy, cheap and simple, it really surprised me.
Please have Dr Mindy Pelz on again to answer all those questions you didn't get to. So helpful! I appreciate you too for making these happen!
There is another video with Dr. Pelz; Fast Like a Girl; where she speaks to fasting and female hormones throughout our lives.
Women and men are biologically different. Am referring to how we are wired due to our natural hormones which is what drives us to shine in areas we are naturally meant to. This podcast is so full of knowledge on how to examine your own body and be in tune to our needs. This is WHY many cultures women are catered to differently. Now in the Western society in the name of "equality" women actually don't strive. I remember my great grandmother and grandmother would give a break to the young female grand kids a break from house chores during their period. I specifically remember my grandmother would allow some of her menstruating grand daughters to bunk in her room. She would make sure we had hearing pads, offer foods that would help us and just allow us to relax and chill. We had no chores other than cleaning up after yourself. All my male cousins knew why and to leave us alone, most importantly they were raised in a manner to ck in with the elders if they needed anything. Many cultures have a period room or even a outside area where a woman is allowed to distress and away from the frenzy of a full house of daily stressors. It made sense why now in the light of this podcast information.

Amazing information!!!! Thank you so much for this.
She is right about the cycle. I am at my best the first 10 days post cycle
This was great. You are a wonderful instructor 😊

Which fast do you use? I’ve been doing the 16-8, 17-7 for four weeks and am struggling with the weight. I’m 51.
I have had 3 medical doctors totally dismiss my post menopausal weight gain, the high cholesterol...etc. I am so excited I stumbled upon the book and can't put it down! I can't wait to report back after a month of fasting to see how my body resets! Dr. Mindy, thank you so much for not giving up on us, keep up the hard work and the videos, please!
I'm post menopausal too. If you're having success with weight loss let me know what you're doing?
Can you do a video on when you don’t have a period at all?
I m getting your books!
Such excellent information1 Thank you!
That’s very interesting, I’ll give it a go. Thanks
Thank you so much I never get tired of listening to Dr. Mindy and her conversation with different people. The information is always consistent and concise . I am still new at fasting and every time I understand and learn more.
Love listening to Mindy. Such a heroine for women's health and understanding our bodies!
Dr. Mindy Pelz is AMAZING! I wish I found her sooner in my life! I am 38 years old and have never understood my cycle the way she is explaining it! It's both awesome and sad! Women need to know this and should be taught in health class. If women don't understand, men really don't understand. This changes everything with life, health, and relationships. I am going to get her book "fast like a girl", I want to know more!
Dr Mindy is an amazing human! I look forward to her two next books.🎉
Really appreciate dr mindy😊
What a blessing to watch this informative video with two amazing kind brilliant doctors who care about natural medicine and immunity! :)
I wish the fast like a girl app was available for Android users 😔
That makes sense why I couldn't find it. 😔
Her book so good! The fasting helping with SIBO.
Wonderful conversation., Thank you very much
I love you Dr Mindy ❤ I could listen to you forever ! Much love from “Vegas “

58 yr old male, poor circulation, overweight, ED, and CKD. Can fasting help me?
the name "hardfight" .... Very clever, slyly funny.... You have a good attitude about your health issues🤣
Definately!!!! Just play with it, try it-begins with WHEN you are going to start eating every day…then move it later a half hour for a week…then add more this way. Good luck
This is such a good interaction its so informative about Women and for Women I totally relate to trying to keep all the plates spinning even when I have time out
I started watching this video and decided to do a 24hr fast, by the end I’ve decided to extend it to 72hours 😂😂😂 wish me luck 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽😂😂😂
When I was eating 6 small meals a day I was a fat burning machine and I lost 60 lbs and out on muscle and toned my body to look the best I have ever looked ... I was fit like that for about 6 years and then my lifestyle changed bc I became very busy to where I couldn't meal prep and no time to hit the gym bc I was studying 12 hrs a day and hit burnout then I became a nurse and the stress of it all I packed the pounds on and became obese. When I tried the same formula years later I wasn't seeing results anymore ...I think I became insulin resistant or didn't give it enough time
Could you do a video on breastfeeding and fasting? There is different info out there.
Dr. Mindy claims that day one through 10 is the best time to work out really hard or do an extended fast. But day one through 10 is when you’re on your period. I’m actually more hungry during that time and more lazy. I don’t wanna work out as hard.
That really surprised me as well. I'm menopausal now, but when I was cycling I was by far at my worst (and least energetic) for the first few days of my cycle, and I didn't suffer from PMS symptoms. My daughter is the same way. So I don't think this information/advice is one-size-fits-all.
I think it really depends. For me day 1-10 has always been my least hungry most clarity days. But a lot of other women don’t have that. I believe Dr. Mindy Pell would say, you might have to do a reset for a couple of months until you can do it this way. So don’t force it, but see when in your cycle you do feel this way. And just get to know your own cycle.
Talks about fasting and cancer
So how does a woman who is postmetaphoral,69 yrs old having had a hysterectomy calculate when she should work out where does she start to count When she no longer has a period to go by ????
What about post menopause? I'm on estradial and progesterone
So I'm post menopausal when do i fast and for how long ?
I believe it’s following moon cycles - new moon, day 1-20, day 21-30 off (full moon is day 14/15)
@@gialollobrigida1713can you explain more. Not understanding
There is something about the parts of the discussion that talk about men using this information to "unlock" the right or more optimal response in women around them that makes me bristle. Especially the father/daughter scenario. It is one thing to educate an individual about their biology to empower them to make more helpful choices or to educate people about the fact that our biological make ups are complex and vary based on the many layers of our identities, so we can be more understanding about how people's responses may be affected. It is entirely something else to tell men to vary their approach to women based on a goal and their menstrual cycle. It feels manipulative and like a shortcut around autonomy and agency. This information feels deeply private and personal. We all, after all, have to show for the world whether we are at our best or not, regardless of the cause. We are expected to be able to resolve conflict or perform at work, even during times that we are exposed to stressors, whether that has to do with things like financial difficulties, familial challenges, or shedding your uterine lining.
How do you find day 1 to day 10 if you do not have a cycle?
Align your period to the moon cycle (i.e., new moon to full moon).
No cycle, post menopause@@tkspiece2310
New moon 🌙 is day 1. Nurture Phase starting week before New Moon.
How would I work out my hormonal cycle if I am post menopausal and not on HRT
Yes I’m the same 😊
12;49 Drop the vernacular!!
So what about kids and fasting?
What if my 9 y.o. son doesn't really want to have breakfast?
All the articles on Google say it's "bad for kids to fast" and they "have to have breakfast to give them the energy they need to go through the day and feed their muscles"?
Is there anything out there that supports fasting for kids (especially if they have an auto-immune issue)?
@DrMindyPelz is the Fast Like A Girl app available for Android? I'm having trouble finding it...thank you!
On another topic - regarding advertisement - the '10 000 steps' idea came from a Japanese marketing strategy for a pedometer in the 1960's! 🤯
I love your content, but I'm so sad to see that you've started with the 'click-bait' cover images for your videos. I'm assuming these make a difference, and I'd love to see your channel grow, but I wish it didn't have to be by doing it this way. It's the same with Dr Chatterjee's podcast, that always have these click-bait, catastrophic-ish titles. It's so far from the content you both produce and your values. I hope at some time you feel that you don't need to have these type of titles 'Loose the belly fat!' stressful titles because it doesn't align at all with the knowledgeable and compassion conversations you have.
I couldn't agree more! I thought this title didn't match the content or message from the conversation at all!
@@themeadowsosteopathclinic-6192 and I have actually thought about this before - that I've been so happy that @doctorskitchen doesn't use this type of language. A reason why I have unsubscribed to Dr Chatterjee here on TH-cam - because it really stressed me to have a feed with 'Don't do this or you'll die' type of titles. I still watch the podcast, but getting the info from Instagram instead where he doesn't use this type of language. Anyway, still grateful for the great content of course! ✨🙏
Isn't it annoying? But then I think, maybe it grabs ppl with zero attention span that otherwise may not hear a more nuanced conversation
For real, I came here looking for "the worst intermittent fasting mistakes". I listened to Dr. Mindy on a another podcast and was hoping that I'd maybe find information I didn't get there on here. I don't want to listen to this all over again. I feel played lol.
I feel the same way. Particularly because as a long time listener, it is so misrepresentative of his inclusive, compassionate, respected by medical and scientific peers style of content. It’s even made me less likely to recommend these videos to patients or friends as the titles are a bit embarrassing, and I feel I have to add a disclaimer saying it’s not just about the title, there’s well presented scientific knowledge from someone I’ve listened to for years and respect their knowledge base and passion to deliver more information to people to empower themselves to use food and nutrition as medicine.
As a woman whose 28 years surgically (total) post-menopause, how do I fast? Like a man since no ovaries, hrt or cycle?
Se d info on reset fasting
What if you don’t have a period due to partial hysterectomy
Where can I get a CGM
Can people on dialysis fast? If so how long can they fast?
First 10 days from 1st day of period?
So if you take prednisolone for an autoimmune condition does that mean you are stuffed because your cortisol levels will be constantly high regardless? What would one do in that circumstance?
I take 5 mg of prednisone every day because of kidney transplant for past 9 years, 2 and half years ago I started IF and Low carb, so far I have lost 80 lbs. last 1 year is excruciating slow progress but not gaining any back so far.
What collagen powder do you recommend? What red light therapy machine do you recommend? How do I sign up for reset academy?
Can someone write a paragraph about these mistakes, just a list.
Can someone give me an idea for a monthly fast calendar to keep it varied? Currently I’m going 16-8 almost every day, and every week I do not eat after Thursday dinner until Saturday lunch.
Vary your fasting times. Some days fast longer. One day don't fast at all!
@@alejandraromero1204 thank you.
Question ☆ when fasting 24 hrs or more what exactly am I supposed to put into my body ?
Just drink water and your body will do the rest
I heard it takes 3 days fast for body to start ketosis.
Hormone replacement good idea?
The app doesn’t work, it won’t let me adjust the dates.
This title has very little to do with the interview
Vary time, food, or what ? ?
My grandson knew exactly where his mother and sister were in their cycles for his own mental "safety".😅
Hi Dr Mindy
How does low T patient therapy affect the fasting process.
( are there any negative effects to be aware of? )thks
What is cgm?
LOVE this and it all rings true. BUT No way should we be putting our cycles into an app in this era. Yikes.
I still don’t understand how much food do we eat in our eating window?
We’re not supposed to count calories, if I eat 1 meal and a snack during my 4 hour eating window. That’s could be 1000 to 1600 calories
50%fat 35%protein 15%carbs I’m post menopausal and would like to loose 15 to 20 lbs.
I think she would recommend eating until you are satisfied. Unless you have underlying issues that affect how you perceive satiation, that works for most people. You shouldn't restrict yourself if you're hungry during your "feasting" window, but you also shouldn't stuff yourself in anticipation of fasting.
J’aimerais tellement un de ses livres en Français Merci
I’m curious if I eat over 5 hours in a day I seem to just want to eat more once I start eating but if I keep it to 5 hrs or less fasting I do ok so like 6-10 pm window or say 2-6 pm
Anyone having any insight on this? I’m trying to break thru last 15 lbs
Been IF for a year love this lifestyle ❤
I'm not sure why your body does that but seeing your feasting times late at night may not help with losing that last bit of weight. Dr. Mindy suggests varying your fasting lengths for female hormones. Her book answers these questions.
Eat when it’s daylight
I have heard that biologically based on circadian rhythm 12-16 is the best if you Plan to open for 4hours ,11-17 if you opening for 6h . 😃 But most important seems to be that eating window closes 4h before you go to sleep.
Try eating at noon n 6 or 11 n 5. Once in awhile eat once per day. Also some exercise helps too. Even just walking. Don't drink your calories if possible. I make an exception for my coffee. Drop fake foods n additives. That may help
Lots of useful information, thank you. Respectfully, I disagree on the notion that men need to learn womens’ cycles and plan around them. Human relationships require understanding and compromise from both sides.
I am still very confused- these are detailed information and lots of chat. I need down to earth instructions - there are 4 weeks in each month. 1 is pre menstrual and the other is period. More or less. What do I eat each week. What don’t I eat each week. I am on IF for 3 weeks and zero difference. I cant do 36h as I travel too much. I am
62.5 kg and want to drop 3-4 kg. It’s so hard. Last time I had my ideal weight was 4 months ago. I eat carbs for breakfast and than I do veggies meat. No soda. No candy. No sugar. Salads, soups, meat. My only sin is 2 glasses of wine. I do 18-6, but some days 14-10 or 23-1. Really I am sooooooo frustrated!!!!
If fasting doesn't seem to work for you. You might wanna try to seek medical help to really know what your body specifically needs.
Skip carbs for bfast, need big protein-if you are doing IF, then usually there’s no bfast, unless you stop eating at 5-6pm. So as far as cycle is concerned, generally speaking, 1-20 day, Intfast- 21-30 off-use either Moon’s cycles (ie what I said above) or your own, unless they are all over the place.
And yes, always get yr thyroid levels taken by a Dr who works a lot with women
You’re frustrated because you’re trying to make sense of someone talking nonsense. Don’t listen to these people. 😊
First try with a constant IF window. Make that a constant time frame so you can eat at the same time everyday. Break your fast with something with fat and protein. Have different protein with every meal in between your eating time. Then slowly get to 20:4 IF window.
Also take ACV at night an hour before going to bed so it can boost your fat burning while sleeping. Make sure to drink it into your water about two cups with lemon.
What if you no longer have a cycle ?
how do you figure out what day you are in cycle if you don't have your period anymore?
You can take orientation based on Moon Phase (Dr.Mindy made this advice on other Podcast. So your day one is New Moon 🌙 ((you can checkt it online according to the place you live)) and your nurture Phase is therefore one week before New Moon.
😃
Don’t blame Dr. Fung though
Would drinking water warm with Apple cider vinegar cancel the fasting process?
Drink ACV an hour before bed to boost your fat burning while sleeping.
Apple cider vinegar with water should be even helpful while fasting.
I’m pre diabetic, an extremely anxious person which is probably keeping my cortisol high. If fasting, which I practise raises cortisol, should I be doing it? I try to meditate but not being consistent with this. Any other suggestions to lower cortisol would be greatly appreciated
In many of her other videos, she talks about the benefitsof walking to manage cortisol. 😊
I had this problem. I was exercising too much and too hard. I switched to weight training, stopped cardio except walking, and i sleep more. Has been life changing.
Intermittent fasting, walking, breathing exercises (Dr Weil has good intro to them)
For the anxiety try cold water therapy. Read whim hof.
Long walks in Forest or park where are a lot of trees and starring on still waters 🌊 have shown similar effects to meditation and regulation of cortisol Levels. 😃
Can fasting help an underactive thyroid
Yes my girl had it went in to have bloods done and had normal levels again 4 months till normal
Why we look at ancestors if they lived so short lives?
You don't say anything about preservatives and what you should do to keep it off Jason has covered that
3 days to the sex who deals with a period every single month. When men do too, they can have 3 days. That sounds fair to me!
1:40:19 was kind of expecting you would say kids as well. Or is it ok for overweight kids?
Recently read a medical study that found that intermittent fasting is the strongest tool in the arsenal of helping obese kids. It is easy to follow, the whole family can do it, no calorie counting or special foods-IT WORKS
How do i track my cyckle if I am on implant and u don't bleed at all!!??? 😢 Apparently implant keep my progesterone low and steady at all times so I can't fast all month?
Just do it, play around with fasting, altering your eating windows…you don’t HAVE to line things up with your cycles/hormones. Just fast!
Not fasting related...but i would be very angry at my husband if he spent 3 months worth of wages on a ring.😅
I’m curious, how does this translate to children?
Outstanding
Hi, was always told if you don't eat you get gas. And that has happened to me. Belching and stomach gurgling . What is that?
Body is adjusting…keep at it…try some ginger
does not happen to me so maybe just getting use to this way
Hi doctor mindy is it ok for me to eat rice like every second day just once a day
But just a portion
Avoid white rice. Brown rice is a better alternative if rice is a staple in your diet.
Is there a way to immediately help lower your cortisol in situations where it goes up from emotional situations?
Yes I’d like to know this too
Yes, you need to move. Walk or do air squats if you feel stressed. Moving does really help.
Oh I exercise every day, power walks, weights. Anxiety is always there and worse this week as husband diagnosed with cancer
That's awful 😢 so sorry. I exercise daily too but it's about cortisol surges in stressful situations. That's when you shouldn't stay still but get up and move. Ashwagandha can help with anxiety ❤
So do y’all do 16/8 or 20/4 and vary fasts between those?
What day of the month does ovulation happen? She said that’s a good time to resolve a conflict or ask for a raise.
Why does it always go back what our primary ancestors did? They didn't live past 30 years old. What does that tell you
How do I figure out what part of my cycle I am at if I have had a partial hysterectomy? I still have ovaries but do not have a period. I am 43, and my body is driving me nuts
I’m in the same boat. I still PMS with no period. It’s crazy! Maybe if you PMS then you know the following week would be the period week. So that could help determine where in the cycle we are.
Having been tempted to do the 5:2 diet (which is fine), I might rethink this :) Thank you.
I think I have a body full of cortisol
I bet those extra aminos needed in second half of cycle is to grow a baby and doing more to keep that baby with increased progesterone also.
