    Fasting is one of the hottest topics at the moment and I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr Mindy Pelz to dive into this fascinating area.
    Like I always say to people, fasting is potentially a phenomenal, multifunctional tool that we can use to improve our immune system and our metabolic health. But the dose of fasting, the method of fasting and whether fasting is at all appropriate if you have a pre-existing condition, are all questions that are very hard to answer.
    Adding further complexity to the decision of how and when to fast, is the menstrual cycle. For years Mindy has been educating 1000s of women online on how to make the best use of this tool with the consideration of their shifting hormones.
    We go into a lot of detail today, but as ever there are so many more things that we need to discuss and will probably have to do a part 2 at some point in the future.
    Do check out Mindy’s fabulous book, “Fast like a Girl”, I’ve been recommending it to everyone and it’s a great resource for anyone interested in fasting as a tool for health.
    We also talk about some caveats of fasting and who fasting is NOT for in this episode. This is especially the case for anyone pregnant, breastfeeding or who has a history of eating disorders.

    I am already seeing a difference …. Years ago I was 150 by walking 2 miles to school and back and eating so so … as soon as I stopped walking and drove I the burbs I started to pack in pounds … my body had a set point and it was confused at my sudden drop in 2 miles a day
    I started following Dr Pelz and she just made soooo much sense out of it all ….
    This is what I do ( I will say giving up pasta as an Italian is hard !!)
    I mix up my fasting sometimes 8:16 sometimes 4: 20
    I only eat in that designated window
    I only eat Whole Foods and 150 grams of protein since my goal is 150 lbs
    I drink water black coffee
    Green tea
    I eat 2 sometimes 3 meals a day in that window
    I don’t count calories
    I do eat a small avacado a day …
    I walk but not miles and miles I don’t do it to lose necessarily but for heart health
    I lift weights but free weights squats no gym just you tube 2 3 days a week
    I lost 20 lbs

    I appreciate this distillation of knowledge, I feel frustrated that I can't feel my body cycles, I have ignored my body and its cycles all of my life, dieted, if it worked I would be a supermodel, I am so upset and angry at doctors who even today dismiss me. Every form of fasting will require a regular bowel cleansing: So, take at least every second day early in the morning on an empty stomach 1 tablespoon (15 ml) castor oil in order to excrete not only the waste in your intestines but further to eliminate all the toxins deposed in your body (methylmercury!) via the liver too.

    • @anneg7411
      @anneg7411 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@user-ru1jt3ve8u I don't know what you've tried already that didn't work for you, but if you haven't already I'd suggest reading/listening to Professor Tim Noakes and following his dietary advice. He basically suggests increasing your (natural/healthy) fat intake and drastically decreasing your carbohydrate intake. After several years of frustrating post-menopausal weight creep, that is what worked for me. Without feeling hungry or deprived, I lost the annoying belly fat I'd put on and have more energy. I've used that energy to get back into weight lifting (I just use dumbbells at home) and the resistance training has restored the muscle I'd lost from sarcopenia. I actually feel (and look) better than I did before menopause.
      When I first tried intermittent fasting a few years ago, it didn't work for me. I felt like I was getting weaker and compromising muscle each time I fasted for more than 12-14 hours. Since increasing my fat and meat consumption, I am having no problem with intermittent fasting. I did my first 24 hour fast this week and it was easier than I'd anticipated. I'm at a healthy BMI so am not looking to lose fat at this point, just to stay healthy and keep my immune system (and muscles) strong as I age. Hope this helps 🙏

      In spite of writing this with a big smile, I'm not kidding. ;-)
      PS: BTW fasting has among others one enormous advantage. You can start right now, any time any day, no prescriptions medicines, etc. Quick, easy, cheap and simple, it really surprised me.

  • @arjumaniqbal8181
    @arjumaniqbal8181 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    Women and men are biologically different. Am referring to how we are wired due to our natural hormones which is what drives us to shine in areas we are naturally meant to. This podcast is so full of knowledge on how to examine your own body and be in tune to our needs. This is WHY many cultures women are catered to differently. Now in the Western society in the name of "equality" women actually don't strive. I remember my great grandmother and grandmother would give a break to the young female grand kids a break from house chores during their period. I specifically remember my grandmother would allow some of her menstruating grand daughters to bunk in her room. She would make sure we had hearing pads, offer foods that would help us and just allow us to relax and chill. We had no chores other than cleaning up after yourself. All my male cousins knew why and to leave us alone, most importantly they were raised in a manner to ck in with the elders if they needed anything. Many cultures have a period room or even a outside area where a woman is allowed to distress and away from the frenzy of a full house of daily stressors. It made sense why now in the light of this podcast information.

I believe Dr. Mindy Pell would say, you might have to do a reset for a couple of months until you can do it this way. So don’t force it, but see when in your cycle you do feel this way. And just get to know your own cycle.

    There is something about the parts of the discussion that talk about men using this information to "unlock" the right or more optimal response in women around them that makes me bristle. Especially the father/daughter scenario. It is one thing to educate an individual about their biology to empower them to make more helpful choices or to educate people about the fact that our biological make ups are complex and vary based on the many layers of our identities, so we can be more understanding about how people's responses may be affected. It is entirely something else to tell men to vary their approach to women based on a goal and their menstrual cycle. It feels manipulative and like a shortcut around autonomy and agency. This information feels deeply private and personal. We all, after all, have to show for the world whether we are at our best or not, regardless of the cause. We are expected to be able to resolve conflict or perform at work, even during times that we are exposed to stressors, whether that has to do with things like financial difficulties, familial challenges, or shedding your uterine lining.

      I feel the same way. Particularly because as a long time listener, it is so misrepresentative of his inclusive, compassionate, respected by medical and scientific peers style of content. It’s even made me less likely to recommend these videos to patients or friends as the titles are a bit embarrassing, and I feel I have to add a disclaimer saying it’s not just about the title, there’s well presented scientific knowledge from someone I’ve listened to for years and respect their knowledge base and passion to deliver more information to people to empower themselves to use food and nutrition as medicine.

      I think she would recommend eating until you are satisfied. Unless you have underlying issues that affect how you perceive satiation, that works for most people. You shouldn't restrict yourself if you're hungry during your "feasting" window, but you also shouldn't stuff yourself in anticipation of fasting.

More or less. What do I eat each week. What don’t I eat each week. I am on IF for 3 weeks and zero difference. I cant do 36h as I travel too much. I am
    62.5 kg and want to drop 3-4 kg. It’s so hard. Last time I had my ideal weight was 4 months ago. I eat carbs for breakfast and than I do veggies meat. No soda. No candy. No sugar. Salads, soups, meat. My only sin is 2 glasses of wine. I do 18-6, but some days 14-10 or 23-1. Really I am sooooooo frustrated!!!!

      Skip carbs for bfast, need big protein-if you are doing IF, then usually there’s no bfast, unless you stop eating at 5-6pm. So as far as cycle is concerned, generally speaking, 1-20 day, Intfast- 21-30 off-use either Moon’s cycles (ie what I said above) or your own, unless they are all over the place.

      First try with a constant IF window. Make that a constant time frame so you can eat at the same time everyday. Break your fast with something with fat and protein. Have different protein with every meal in between your eating time. Then slowly get to 20:4 IF window.
      Also take ACV at night an hour before going to bed so it can boost your fat burning while sleeping. Make sure to drink it into your water about two cups with lemon.
