    Hey, its me and heres the thing: Movies which are now being remade as liveaction seem like a desperate attempt for money, honestly as probaly many have seen theres been a large amount of public outcry for those movies not to be made. If you look Lion King live action trailer it wont give you the sense of nostalgia, it just feels bad. Id rather watch them make Lion King in 4K redrawn, reanimated and with more colours rather than in live action (ofc live action can never replicate the same motions as the animated version does, same goes for sonic). Games for example well honestly i cant be very mad with the developing companies, they usually just make old games look better aka just enchacing the graphics nothing much.
    To be honest we should rather just learn from history than try to remake it.
    Nothing will be the same.
    New can be good aswell.

      You also have to consider the CGI industry is gigantic right now - there are droves of young people graduating as we speak with intention of getting into a field where they can use those skills - you need to continue to have a market for them - these Disney movies will put bread on the table.

    For me, nostalgia usually comes in a package with melancholy and depression. It is inseparable in my case. Never heard it described so positively in my life.

    • @LouisFoglia
      @LouisFoglia 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's two academic ideas about nostalgia. Restorative nostalgia and reflective nostalgia. In the reflective model, nostalgia is about lingering on ruins. I think that fits into your idea. Check out Leetch's paper that I link to in the description.... I had written a little section on this, but it went a bit too off course...

    • @LouisFoglia
      @LouisFoglia 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But it's what I'm trying to get at in the Saving Private Ryan section...

    • @gregwolf1
      @gregwolf1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LouisFoglia Thanks, gonna check that out in more detail.
      It got through that there is negative nostalgia, but it was very brief so it feels like nostalgia is supposed to be good in 95% of cases and bad in only 5. But still it was a very good report on the subject, thought provoking and interesting.
      Long text alert:
      I feel like even when a person is nostalgic about a movie in a positive way let's say, most people realize that that time is gone and never can be relived, and the film is a weak attempt to relive said times. Over time people often forget about the negative events of the past and they remember the positive things only, romantasizing the past even further. Comparing it to the present then is even more frustrating or even depressing. I don't know many people who would go hippedy hoppedy I'm so happy, the past was so good, the new lion king just made me remember, lets rebuilt that time, I'm gonna vote for someone who brings back past values and I'm gonna live and behave like in the old days. It is tricky to trigger positive, or as you said restorative nostalgia I think. Harder than negative, certainly.

    I feel so estranged from this world sometimes. This is one of those things: I don't watch reboots. They're boring. I love original ideas, creative experiments, unexpected twists. It's supposed to be an art form but all the art has been sucked out of it. I think the Swiss had it right, nostalgia is a bit of a sickness.

    It's not always bad indeed. I think the Lion King or Marvel movie 274 are not that great in terms of nostalgia. Remakes and sequels suck. But using elements from past times can work. I think Pokemon Go was a brilliant idea for example, it uses nostalgic elements but was a completely unique experience (it's a shame they developed it so poorly though).

    Well think about it from an investor's perspective, would you put your money into something that is unproven? Something that, if it fails, you've lost all your money? Or, would you invest into something that is proven to make money, and would almost guarantee a return on your investment?
    My guess is you chose the latter. And that is why there are so many sequels, remakes, and others.
