Had to take A and D as a child. I was born in a prison, spent the first year in that prison. I had rickets. My adopted parents gave me cod liver oil and made me play out side in the sun. Also put iodine in oil and put all over my body. Thank the Lord I never broke a bone. What is your best source and how much a day?

🎯 Key points for quick navigation:
    00:00:22 *🥗 Overview of Vitamin A*
    - Vitamin A is crucial yet often overlooked compared to other vitamins.
    - It is the first vitamin discovered and classified as fat-soluble.
    - Overdosing is possible but not synonymous with being highly toxic just because it is fat-soluble.
    - Understanding the difference between vitamin A and carotenoids is vital for dietary choices.
    00:05:06 *🍏 Food Sources of Vitamin A*
    - Liver is the richest source of vitamin A, along with dairy products.
    - Carotenoids, found in colorful fruits and vegetables, are not vitamin A but can be converted to it in a healthy gut.
    - Caution is needed when consuming supplements like cod liver oil to avoid toxicity.
    - A healthy gallbladder is necessary for the effective absorption of fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin A.
00:11:06 *🏥 Role of Vitamin A in Gut and Immune Health*
    - Vitamin A is essential for regenerating epithelial tissues affecting skin, urinary, and respiratory tracts.
    - A deficiency can lead to skin issues, urinary tract infections, and compromised lung function.
    - It plays a significant role in mucus production, which is vital for immune defense against pathogens.
00:16:19 *👁️ Importance of Vitamin A for Vision and Hormonal Health*
    - Vitamin A is critical for maintaining eye health and preventing dryness or vision loss.
    - It is involved in hormone production, converting cholesterol to estrogen and testosterone.
    - Deficiency can disrupt thyroid function as vitamin A assists in activating thyroid hormone receptors essential for metabolism.
    00:22:04 *🔄 Vitamin A and Thyroid Function*
    - Healthy thyroid function is interconnected with vitamin A levels and deficiencies could exacerbate thyroid problems.
    - Individuals on thyroid medication should consider having their vitamin A levels checked for effective treatment.
    - Low protein intake, particularly in vegetarian diets, can contribute to vitamin A deficiency affecting thyroid hormone conversion.
22:59 *🧬 Importance of Protein and Thyroid for Vitamin A Conversion*
    - Understanding the role of protein and thyroid hormone is crucial for the conversion of carotenoids to vitamin A.
    - A deficiency in protein or thyroid hormone can hinder this conversion process.
    - Conditions like celiac disease or food allergies may damage the gut lining and further inhibit conversion.
    - The necessity of gallbladder health for vitamin A absorption emphasizes the importance of dietary management.
    25:16 *🔄 Vitamin A, Hashimoto's, and the Thyroid Connection*
    - The relationship between vitamin A deficiency and thyroid function, particularly in patients with Hashimoto's disease, is complex.
    - Vitamin A deficiency does not directly cause Hashimoto's, though it can exacerbate thyroid dysfunction.
    - Vegetarians or vegans with low thyroid levels may face challenges in converting carotenoids to vitamin A.
    - Monitoring and proper supplementation of vitamin A may assist in managing related thyroid issues.
29:05 *🌱 Functions of Vitamin A: Growth, Differentiation, and Cancer Prevention*
    - Vitamin A plays critical roles in cellular growth, differentiation, and apoptosis, impacting overall health and cancer prevention.
    - Deficiencies can lead to severe developmental issues in children and contribute to cancer risk in adults.
    - Vitamin A aids in differentiating cells properly to prevent the formation of tumors and support healing processes.
    - The importance of vitamin A in processes like apoptosis helps regulate cell death and maintain tissue health.
    33:44 *❓ Doctor-Patient Dynamics and Nutritional Awareness*
    - Effective communication between patients and healthcare providers about nutrition can enhance treatment outcomes.
    - Doctors should be open to questions and acknowledge areas of uncertainty rather than projecting anger or frustration onto patients.
    - A strong understanding of nutritional biochemistry is essential for doctors prescribing medications.
    - Establishing a healthy patient-doctor relationship is vital for effective care.
35:07 *💊 Proper Intake and Absorption of Vitamin A*
    - The method of taking vitamin A impacts its absorption; it is best consumed with dietary fats.
    - Retinol binding protein, vital for vitamin A transport in the body, relies on adequate zinc levels.
    - High doses of vitamin A may pose health risks, including toxicity and liver problems; moderation and monitoring are key.
    - Quality sources of vitamin A (like pastured egg yolks and liver) are emphasized for maintaining adequate levels.
    00:44:56 *🍽️ Dietary Recommendations for Vitamin A*
    - Various methods to incorporate organ meats into diet.
    - Mixing liver with other foods can help those averse to its texture.
    - Discussion on the nutritional value of organ meats compared to other foods.
    00:46:07 *🧪 Vitamin A and Health Conditions*
    - Exploring the relationship between vitamin A and autoimmune diseases.
    - Vitamin A may enhance the effectiveness of methotrexate for autoimmune conditions.
    - Research suggests that vitamin A may improve vaccine tolerance in certain individuals.
00:48:15 *🧒 Importance of Testing Children for Nutrient Deficiencies*
    - Discussing necessity of testing children for vitamin A deficiencies.
    - Healthy children may not need routine testing unless there's concern over growth or health issues.
    - Importance of monitoring nutrition to ensure proper development and health.
00:49:45 *🌱 Nutritional Density of Organ Meats*
    - Highlighting the nutritional superiority of organ meats compared to other food groups.
    - Organ meats are considered highly nutrient-dense, potentially surpassing fruits and vegetables.
    - Cultural significance of organ meat in various diets around the world.
00:51:43 *🚨 Toxins and Liver Function*
    - Understanding liver's role in detoxification and implications of consuming low-quality animal products.
    - The liver can fail to detoxify effectively if overwhelmed, leading to health issues.
    - Importance of sourcing meats intentionally to avoid toxins from poorly raised animals.
00:56:05 *🏥 Vitamin A Deficiency and Liver Health*
    - Connection between vitamin A deficiency and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
    - Several nutritional deficiencies linked to fatty liver, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive dietary approach.
    - The importance of gluten sensitivity in preventing liver conditions.
00:57:01 *🐄 Industrial Farming and Nutritional Quality*
    - Critique of industrial farming practices and their negative impact on meat quality.
    - Industrial farms can create unhealthy conditions for animals, affecting the quality of meat.
    - Suggestion to seek grass-fed and humanely raised animal products for better health.

33:45 - 34:52 What an awesome man! All doctors should be like him. I've had GP, nutritionist, endocrinologist, gastroenterologist, etc, doing this to me and I still don't know what is causing my Vitamin A deficiency. I've been wondering if I should visit a genetist.

Well I'm vegan and hashimotos. I had my vitamin a checked two years ago and was low then but I had to have an emergency surgery which has been a 2 year recovery and forgot about my vitamin a deficiency. I just got my blood drawn and am waiting for the results.
I also have bovine allergy. So no dairy. I have issues with gluten and have other food allergies. Have had issues losing weight.
This makes so much sense. Thank you

I have hypothyroidism. Never had my Vit A checked BUT started to supplement myself with 4,800 mcg per diem for my skin, hair & nails being 66 years old. I take psychtropics being Manic Depressive (quite balanced now) in addition to Topamax and Seroquel. However, I have had my gall bladder and right kidney removed, the lattermost due only to a birth defect, not disease. I'm without teeth because the dentures made for me were unwearable, the dentist I consulted refusing to assist me afterwards by saying it was all my fault, literally. No lie. (I've had a husband, friends and both parents with dentures and none of them had the difficulties I did with mine. 😑) I'm going to contact you, Doctor, on your embedded site in the facts listed below this podcast in order to get a more direct response. I hope this is amenable. Thank you. Your podcast is amazing, I'll be watching the others.

Thanks for all the information! I would add that a possible link between vitamin A and Hashimoto's disease is that I've seen that vitamin A deficiency is common in chronic infections and since vitamin A is such an immune booster it then helps with providing the immune system much needed support. Through this the immune system (along with other supplements) can resolve the chronic infection (usually EBV) and Hashimoto's markers resolve itself.

How much vitamin A should we take? Don’t want too much or too little as can cause brittle bones let alone the other issues . Regarding bones and dosing vitamin D, the ratio is important . Lab levels are always conservative for optimal so how do we know if we are optimal ?
Why can no one decide in a ratio ? I’ve read from 30:1 8:1 4:1 2:1 and down to 1:1 with vitamin a being the former . Why is it so hard ?
    Thanks

I personally use 5000IU Beta-Car(RE) and 5000IU Retinol daily. It works terrific for me. I do increase the dose for 5 days during first symptoms of flu.

Vit a toxicity could be a cause of vitamin D deficiency, so check to see if you are low in vit D That might be the problem. vitamin D could also lower vit A. I got this info by research, It helped me. Good luck 😊
