Tried Vallejo, Monument Hobbies and AK Interactive and Citadel. Now I have kind of my favorites from every range. Guess it depends to find the right use for different colours. GWs paint coverage and consistency is… let’s say: sometimes unexpected - especially considering the price.
On note on Aethermatic Blue though - my Nighthaunt paint scheme depends on this colour - so one of my favorites. 👻

Yeah the only thing about gw is that we probably all started with those. Unless you are into historical things then the approach it’s a bit different!
I think we all have citadel and we can find a use for them!

IMO, 3rd gen is superior is almost every way. There are only a handful of Citadel paints I can’t give up, and that’s only because of the actual color, not the paint properties. Nice comparison!👍

Totally worth the 3rd Gen from AK. I really been a fan since i been checking a middle ground between Vallejo and Citadel. The only bad thing is that some colors have a separation issue, but with some good shake can be solved! Overall AK has some solid colors with great cover. Also.. the WHITE INK. ohhhhh sisssterr, that INK is just 10/10 stuff. I just throw away all white inks. Resistant as F and you can build up the white with ease. Neat comparison!

I just ordered some directly from AK and had them shipped to the US, with the VAT removed I paid 2.05 per bottle. Also if anyone outside of Europe is looking on AK's site just add some stuff to your cart and then click view your cart and update your shipping info and then after that you'll notice everything on the site shows cheaper prices due to the VAT being removed from the price. Still saved a ton of money even with shipping vs buying it here in NA.

    • @ataraxiapainting

So you say it’s cheaper than for us in eu???

    • @Forest0922
      @Forest0922 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Ya but u gotta pay shipping which I notice there are creation tiers almost based what you have in the cart. Either way for this of us in NA it's cheaper to just prefer direct from the manufacturer site rather than the few stores in the US that do carry these paints as they mark them up and you still have to pay shipping. If you are going to order from AK directly you gotta make sure your ordering at least a few things to get the most out of what ur paying towards shipping. Either way not VAT.

The other problem with GW is the pot. The paint dry much faster and you can't mix easily, you always need to mix with a brush and the GW paints are too thick most of the time. Anyway I begin with intense set is so good. Thanks for your videos I discover your channel.

I have been painting warhammer miniatures for a couple of years and, as I imagine so many others, have accumulated a lot of gw colors over time trying to replicate the style of their training videos. Today, I feel a little more master of the hobby and I would leave the damn pots .. even if sometimes the 'recipes' are useful for replicating colors over time if you do whole armies. I find myself a slave to the gw colors and I'm afraid to alterate the tones of my armies if I used similar but different colors. I should only use AK on new projects and slowly replace everything

For citadel white, I added josonja medium and some generic brand airbrush thinner to the pot. And it actually made the paint workable. The pigments clump because the medium that I comes in sucks and has nothing to break up the pigments. I still end up using goldens titanium white alot. But thought it's worth noting GW white can be saved

I am in love with the AK 3rd Gen paints. I moved away from Cit mainly because I had some dry up, which hasn't happened with Reaper and Army Painter but I found those rangers less quality to the 3rd Gen Ak. The miniatures I am most happy with have been painted with the 3rd Gen paints. They come in singles, big packs of 8 I think like the browns/leathers and 4 packs like Frozen Flesh which I picked up for a Ice mini. Some depends on individual style as well. 3rd Gen gels with me perfectly. But I know some guys who spray car models with the Dollarstore Craft Paints, and they look amazing. Which is something I can't do.

i started painting about 1,5years ago. And i started with citadel. Some paints got dry in less than 1 year. Citadel paints are very nice, but bottles are garbage. Paint gets dry sooo fast. So then, next time you are painting, probably paint is not as fluid as it should be. I tried AK paints last week, and they are amazing. They are as colorful as citadel. I dont see any reason to keep buying Citadel, unless you like a lot an specific color. For example, i love Averland Sunset. But is nearly same color in AK. So, i do agree with this girl. Go buy AK right now.

Cadium Red, Frog Green and Clear Yellow. Cadium and frog are super gooey no matter how much i shake them, even after putting mixing balls and they require extra thinning. Clear yellow is leaving small brighter stains, but works good with airbrush. I think its just a matter of me having a bad batch.

    Ak 3rd gen are amazing.
GW stuff is absolutely trash for it's price, the only well known brand that I'd say it's better than is army painter. The exception is contrast paints, those are pretty good.
Scale 75 is really good but a little bit harder to use than most paints. The scale 75 artist heavy bodied acrylics are some of my favorite due to their unique buttery consistency.
Kimera is the same but for different reason, it's great if you like mixing & are confident with thinning.
Vallejo used to be something I raved about but honestly the more I've learnt over the years the less I rate it, the biggest issues I have with vallejo is that their paints are about the most fragile things I've ever used. They also have some quality control issues with the bottles their product comes in, myself and a few friends have caps that have split, one person literally had their cap split on the way from the store after buying it. AK interactive 3rd gen are basically a better version of vallejo with none of the downsides. Two exceptions when it comes to Vallejo is the vallejo metal color, that unique metal paint is incredibly useful, the next is their basing texture paints in the big affordable tubs.
Green stuff world, I haven't used their normal acrylics as I've heard they are just ok, but their fluorescents, liquid pigments, fluorescent pigments, metal pigments are all top notch. I think the best way to talk about green stuff world is to say they are absolutely solid outside their normal paint range which is just ok.
Army painter, Just don't. They are low quality products whose only strength is their marketing, they take a ton more work to get good results out of and are inconsistent af.
Tamiya I can't really tell, I avoid their products because usually it's alcohol based on laquer etc and I don't want to deal with the extra steps, however they are very good by reputation, a very solid and long lived reputation at that.
    secret weapon, no idea.
war colours, no idea either, heard good things, gel based acrylics.
Reaper is another I have no idea about. For this and the two above I just have found no reason to try them.
P3 while the company has done some incredibly dodgy things over the past years, like selling models with uncured resin, doing tutorial about painting that would misslead new painters to ruin their brush and use way too much paint (encouraging being wasteful) (this is what led p3 to turn off comments on their video tutorials so follow that trail to see which video if you want, now I think about it GW turns off their comments on their videos too), they do have some beautiful colors of paints, I love their necro gold and there is a rust color that is nice (bloodstone), I also hear people swear by coal black. I just don't see the real need to use their paints, for starters they are in those horrible pots, for second... there is just better competition out there.
Pro acryl, oh I want to love pro acryl, but I dislike their bottles, their bright gold and bronze is nice but alas their normal paints while having some incredibly gorgeous ones like bold pyrrole red, the paints don't act well if anything, and I mean ANYTHING messes with them.
For example put them on wet palette? they don't last anywhere near anything else, defeating half the point of a wet palette imo. I suspect their medium has great pros but at the cost of very specific cons.
If they weren't in those annoying unique bottles I'd probably still recommend them.
    ---
Speaking of bottles, AK interactive 3rd gen ones are my favourite, the cap works really well to keep things not clogged and I have had no issues so far, in fact AK interactive 3rd gen is my recommendation of a paint that's good for beginners and desirable for pro's.
If you want a good recommendation point on this paint range: Sergio Calvo who paints the cover art of many busts/artist models mostly uses them for painting those.

These 3rd gen AK paints are some of the best on the market.
