Fun little backstory/lore/headcanon for the sword It was made by a novice artificer as a proposal for the king so that his scouts could have a weapon ready at a moment's notice that also wouldn't take up much space; however, due to how the mechanism was set up, a direct jab would cause the blade to retract back to the hilt, the artificer was determined to make the weapon work as he believed that if his father a scout for the king had one he would have returned home that faithful night. So the artificer journeys the land looking to find a way to fix the flaw. He happens upon a skilled wizard who tells of a spell that allows a user to bond to their weapon, allowing them to control aspects of it. The problem is that this spell requires the hide/scales of a darkened bronze dragon, which, while they aren't very dangerous, are rare due to how old a bronze dragon must be before it transforms, so the artificer sets out after many moons defending himself with only his blade the artificer finds his target after a long battle the dragon falls the artificer follows the wizard's instructions and bonds to the blade soon after he returns to the king showing that he has fixed the weakness of the blade. Still, the king said that through the artificer's journey, the blade's weakness never hindered him, and by finding the solution to his problem, he showed how the problem was less of an issue than he had thought ultimately, though the blade was distributed. The king knew that the artificer would be a genius trying to find solutions to any problem. As for the original sword, it now lies with a vase of flowers on the father's grave. I'm not the best storyteller, but I couldn't help myself.
Really cool! Now I wanna make one. I just need to sacrifice an umbrella... I have some ideas for how to keep the tip from getting loose and also make the locking mechanism easier, if you want to revisit the project. Before disassembly, the folded-in 'spiderlegs' of the umbrella connected the top piece and the locking piece rigidly, both pushing and pulling. The added wire can only pull. You could use two of the spiderlegs as spacers between the to bits. They would make the top bit and and locking bit move as one solid unit. That way it should lock simply by being pushed together and you get more area to which to attach the top piece of the sword.

Small tip for painting cardboard (and a few other water/paint soaking materials) . Try diluting some pva glue with water 50-50 or so, and either brush or spray (any el cheapo squirty bottle should do) a light thin coat on top of it. You don't want to soak the cardboard, so if you need more it is best to do two-three thin coats than go in heavy and overdo it. This will be both a primer and a sealant for the cardboad once it is dry.
@@riaj1124 Compromises the integrity, too bulky even if you make the blade compact, and simply overengineered. And... all kinds of folding blades exist. The butterfly, the absurdly illeral gravity folding knife, a real lot of designs, they all allow for a double edged blade. Yes, conventional folding knives don't. Other designs sometimes compromise safety. But why. Why would you need THAT if you have all the other options?..
come to think of it, i realised today that my umbrella was broken... i am _totally_ keeping it to use as parts for some kinda craft project down the line ;D
I've been meaning to make a weapon prop for my Halloween outfit using the umbrella handle, thanks for this video it now solidifies my resolve for a bloodborne trick weapon 😊
I have actually thought of this as well! I have a broken umbrella and I really wanted to turn it into a spear thingy but it's a bit too short for a spear and I don't really know how to. So thank you for doing this! I actually have a basis now If I still want to go through with the idea.
I would love to see this but with something like PVC piping instead of cardboard. I would have never thought to use an umbrella like that and it’s amazing.

Funfact: this only came from how dangerous umbrellas were around the Victorian era, and in egypt where it was considered disrespectful to the sun god to do that in the home. In general the action was just thought to displease some spirits or be straightup reckless, but nobody is damned to bad luck from it!
that looks like a really fun project. i have an old umbrella, maybe i should do something with it like this. regarding the glasses thing, i got lasik this year and it was legitimately one of the best decisions of my life. if you qualify for it, then i highly recommend it, provided that there is center near you. i got tested for it and had the surgery all in one day, the operation was like five minutes and i could see the better instantly and was up and driving around the next day.

Epic! Mildly related fact, art of inlaying with valuable metals is called damascening, as far as I heard at least 😄 Love the designs on the dark part, and it looks really great all together imo
So not quite , Damascus is the process of forging together layers of different metals (typically different grades of steel) this is done for a number of reasons but it results in a metal with a distinct appearance, typically that of Damascuses Wave or mottled patterns, this is achieved by folding the layers together till they create this pattern… think of it like a marbled puff pastry made of forged from metal. Inlay or more specifically Metal Inlay on the other hand is the process of inlaying a design into one type of typically harder metal using another type of softer metal. This design is typically engraved or carved into the base metal, and then the softer metal is then hammered/pressed into the grooves of the engraved design. I hope that clears up some confusion.

I was aware of the Syrian Capital city Damascus and its ancient origins, but I wasn’t aware of this semantic drift I’m wondering if this polysemy evolution of in the meaning of Damascus vs Damascusing , that is really interesting. I wonder if this may have been due to a Western European mistranslation ( I mean Middle Ages Western Europe was full of individuals who swore they could translate proto-Farsi/ Farsi/Arabic, when really they had slightly less than a clue… looking at you Matthaeus Platearius of the Schola Medica Salernitana) And now I need to dive this is really fascinating thank you for pointing out the Semantic drift and my error :).
I think if you make the tip of the cardboard inner piece longer and fill that extra space with an expanding foam and put in the umbrella bit before it dries it should extend its life a bit without too much change.
