Newcastle edged past previously unbeaten Arsenal 1-0 in the Premier League on Saturday, with Anthony Gordon bagging the eventual winner for the Magpies. Despite a slower start to the season that raised questions about the progress at NUFC - Eddie Howe's side look to be back on track to the form they showed last season to secure them a top 4 finish.
With investment from the Saudi Public Investment Fund into the North East club, a lot of eyes are on Newcastle to see just how they spend their money and effectively build a squad. But are the club proving themselves to be the real deal this season once again? JJ Bull and Jon Mackenzie take a look at just how they are turning into one of England's best tactical football sides.

Man City were good against us but Brighton deserve a shout out. I've never seen a team play through our press like they did. It was high risk, everything had to be done really quickly and with a crazy amount of precision, but they did it flawlessly.

I think Villa did the same last season and a bit in that weird summer series thing, but Villa always felt a bit loser and if it went wrong they were wide open. Brighton seemed to do it with impunity, even when it didn’t come off, they seemed to be set enough to cope with the turnover.

And we're doing this with mostly players that were here before, and players that were believed to be not good, until they proved them all wrong. Even Gordon who was labeled as a flop, is proving many wrong. We're moving in the right direction, squad looking better, Eddie is doing an amazing job, even the youth players we got recently are looking far better than we've had for years. Lovely stuff.

Used to love the show, but I can’t get over why, when the podcast ended, Seb and Joe had to do it like TIFO IRL was ending. Feels so disconnected now, although JJ was the best part of the show he can’t do it all himself. Feels like there’s no more fun on here anymore.
Seems like the show has always been at odds with having fun content and serious football analysis. But the best thing about the show was how it would be so informal and make football analysis easy for people to understand and entertaining at the same time. Without the pretentiousness of some of the more “serious” football content creators
They really need someone on to fill the seats that were left, and lean in to how JJ works, and although Joe’s a big miss, you can capitalise on the more boring personalities leaving.

disregarding the crap var decisions during the newcastle v arsenal match (for both sides and as an arsenal fan) newcastle are definitely an underrated side, a lot of people dont even put them in the top 4 conversation for this PL season, but they definitely could get 4th or even 3rd at this rate, they played very well against us, kept pressure, put a stop and held a strong defensive line against any attacking plays we had against them, they dont have the most incredible team but with another few transfer windows I can definitely see the side becoming title contenders and a top pl club.

I think a draw was a fairer result on Saturday but regardless of that, I'm shocked that people are consistently putting Villa above us. Now with all these injuries is the time when you would expect points to start dropping... And we're doing even better. Looks like Livramento (who is top class) will prove to be a massive signing this season even though I don't like Trippier at LB.

The ball was shown as still in, it looks out because the camera angle is showing the underside of the ball not the widest point. there was no foul since you think Joelinton somehow managed to push Gabriel with so much upper body strength that he wiped out Gabriels feet despite jumping into the goals trajectory not into Gabriel, both feet were off the ground before both hands were on Gabriel and his upper body moved towards his arms instead of his arms extending as you would see in a push. There was no offside since the keepers back leg was keeping Gordon on side at the time of Joelinton/Gabriel touching the ball.

It's interesting that the conclusion is a concern about creativity against deep blocks when teams start working Newcastle out. In the summer Howe was very clearly trying to get a creative No. 10 in to help us with this (Maddison and Szoboszlai were targets), he's well ahead of the game and I'm very excited to see who he recruits to solve that problem.

I would have liked to have seen Arsenal play a bit more direct to Saka / Martinelli in the game. Seems like whenever they actually got the ball in the end Saka was being marked by 3 players. Arteta knows that his team - except Rice + played poorly and when the whole team play badly it’s down to the manager. actually Newcastle has one weakness in their team, even provided examine their ideal first XI, their well-rounded nature of most players except Trippier and Bruno G. It's not a bad thing at all to have a team with highly fluid team, and even unorthodox combinations like the rare occasions Almiron leaves his flank to go to the opposite one to add numerical advantage, their output surely proves the point when regarding their stable goal and points output. But the "well-rounded players" feature makes them highly vulnerable againt an all-rounded and/or unorthodox team since they don't have enough capacity to deal with the other team's unique or even highly oiled attacks. Man City is one orthodox team, Liverpool is one-notch better than them, Arsenal is just levels lower than City but still better, Dortmund is also a case when they cannot exploit Dortmund's awful system and spirit effectively. It will take them some time to ugrade the team from well-rounded to all-rounded, and until they have a chance to meet a special player.
