Hi Tony and Chelsea. Great video and tips! I see you updated the gear recommendations. Good! I am curious as to why Sony and others are not listed. Thanks
Thanks for the recommendations! Any reason you recommend the T6i over the T7i?
Common
this photographer is really good. i like how calm and in control she was even when she was working out her settings. nice to see how the pro's do it.
Tony, I have learn everything I know about photography through your book and your videos... I don't think there is a better instructor out there!
Thanks!! Glad I could help.
Love this! My son slept through his entire newborn shoot. He probably opened his eyes once. He peed and pooped too. It takes a lot of patience. Now I have 2 toddlers and it's SO hard! Going to try these tips.
Just the Albrights That's the truth! Hope we helped you out.
I love how relaxed the photographer was - she definitely brought out the best in the girls. Will definitely use some of the suggestions from this video :)
Heya, Barry. It's more art than science, and it depends on how closely aligned the subjects' faces are to each other, how much of a tilt the head has, how far away you are, and as you mention, the sensor size. You get a feel for it, take a test shot, and then zoom in to make sure all the eyes are reasonably sharp (though often they won't be perfect). Check the Group Photos section in Chapter 6 of Stunning Digital Photography (links in the description) for more info.
Beautiful videos, beautiful presentation and beautiful people!
Thanks!
Wow, she did GREAT! I dont think I could take the pictures how she did. The way she talks to the children is awnsome. Great video.
Love her coaching of the girl. Very gentle and sweet. She made her naturally 😊😁
Yeah, what Xarthor said. In a couple of our recent videos we discuss widllife a portrait gear with Nikon folks, and while there are a few important differences it doesn't make much of a difference at all.
Looove it! I loved the place, the kids, the photographer and everything! Great job! I love this channel
Debinha Fala Sério Thanks!
Thank YOU! x
This is so great. I am an introvert and am pushing out of my comfort zone. This is a great video to help me! It's funny that some people have to work hard just to talk and make people laugh!
You guys have a professional style of teaching, love your work.
We wouldn't have invited Samantha on if we weren't fully confident in her skills. She's very talented.
One thing to consider is that during a normal shoot, you have a lot of time to reposition your model and play with lighting. WHen you're taking pictures during a video there's a lot of pressure to get your photo fast while trying to be instructional. It's very hard!
Sam was using the 50mm f1.8
She does have a great connection with the kids.
Awesome video Tony. Watching all your videos. Your details are easy to learn and to remember. I know that this has nothing to do with it.....but by the way you talk and behave in your videos, I can see you are a good person. Good job.
Wow, thanks, Adrian!
Always like to see a Nikon user. But it's not about the camera. It's your creativity.
Youre so cool! I dont suppose Ive watch something like this before. So good to seek out someone with some authentic ideas on this subject. realy thank you for beginning this up. this video is one thing thats wanted on the youtube, someone with a bit of originality. helpful job for bringing one thing new to the youtube!
Once again a great video with loads of useful info. Great to see a shoot and how this can be done with nothing but reflectors and ambient light. Also to see how something so ordinary like smalltalk a bit of clowning can break the tension and loosen up the subject. Thx!
Lol at 2:54 tony just has this stare.
lmfaoooooo
Of those, definitely your 55-250. Check another one of our recent videos for a discussion of portrait equipment, again featuring Sam.
I love your videos. I am pretty new to the photography world. I have a Nikon d7100. I feel like I am overwhelmed with trying to learn all of the ins and outs. I watch lots of tutorials. I then get frustrated and start using my Iphone 7 plus, lol.
Thank you so much for helping us, for your passion and dedication.
Wow this was 7 years ago but it’s one of the best videos I’ve seen! Keep up the rest uploads.. 7 years later 😂
I think it will be easy for me because I myself am 15 years old. My cousins would love posing in front of me. they won't feel shy. But still a great tutorial I learned a lot today. Thanks tony.
You're welcome!
what is the best lens or lenses to use for baby photography on a budget?
Andrew Bailey I wouldn't worry too much about lenses for baby photography; put your budget into props and lighting.
ok thanks for the help could i just use 1 soft
box?
I like breaking the rules of composition in my photographs. Have you ever broken any rules of composition in any of your's and can you post any?
I really appreciate this tutorial, thanks.
We just forgot to record a closing, and I figured you guys knew the drill: subscribe, like, buy the book, yadda yadda. :)
This is a great video and the photographer is gorgeous.
best tutorial for me!! just moved me one step up from basic!! thank you!!!
That's just Sam's style. I'm usually in Aperture Priority mode. Mode info in Chapter 4 of Stunning Digital Photography.
Awesome!!!!!!!!! That guest photographer has got her business down pat...
Great shoots!!! ... I do have a qustion though. When I take pictures, they don't have that punch like your shots do. Im shooting raw but the pictures don't have that post-professional look before editing. What settings are you using to achieve such great quality during stock photo shoots?
Thanks for making these great videos!! Love themmmm!! Keep them coming please!! I learn something new in every video. Thank you!!!
Oh, yeah, I responded but mis-read Lewis' comment as 1/125th. Confusion everywhere!
If you are a professional photographer or simi prof photographer. Do not use a group image where people care about each other. (maybe in full size) but since you cut your golden cut, you have some finger from another person. Where else comes the rest of the hand. Finger gives a confusing element in a subject. One removes focus on the photograph.
She is awesome with those kids. In small areas like my town the photographers are very stiff old men. They act like there is something unpleasant shoved... Somewhere unpleasant. I just started watching your videos and when I go from bridge to full tilt dslr I will definitely be purchasing your book and recommended equipment.
Does it has to be always manual mode.. usually i play around with Aperture priority mode a lot... beautiful video as always :)
Just wondering why you don't use a tripod, especially when you were shooting them on the grass.
We shoot raw.
Isn’t the shutter speed supposed 2x the focal length of lens ? 1/25 seems super slow
Thank you for your tips and helpful advice, portrait photography is something I'm interested in, I've also purchased your stunning digital book, I like how you both explain everything easily. looking forward to reading your book 😊
What are the best lenses to shoot portraits? I've only bought my first SLR last week so I'm a newbie. I only have the 18-55 and 55-250mm kit lenses but which is better to use?
Tony, which camera did you use for you and Chelsea talking?
She is wonderful ! Thanks for the video guys
thanks to you both. really appreciate your videos everytime
Why is she using an ND filter if she has no flash and doesn't need to limit herself to 1/200 when she can do 1/1000?
I just did that for demonstration purposes. I wanted to explain it was another tool that could be used. I definitely didn't "need" to use it.
Samantha Schannon Tool for those who don't have HSS on their flashes?
Great video. Love the frog hop. Why ISO 200? I usually shoot ISO 100. My understanding is that the higher the ISO the more distortion. Maybe a little higher ISO adds something good. Please educate me.
Peter Wansick Unless you need a faster shutter you should shoot at the base ISO, which is 100 on most cameras.
Amazing video. I love your way that present and gave us the information .. and I truly would ask you guys to make a video about how to photo our self please !♡
Sam B thanks! There's a self portrait video in Chapter 6 of Stunning Digital Photography.
your videos are the absolute best!
Chelsea's voice is really clear and Tony is low and mumbly. Content of the video is good.
This is so educational! Loved it.
Loved the behind the scenes... Was very informative..
thank you so much im learning how to take photos and poses to do and this helped out alot
I love your videos and I have added your book to my Amazon wishlist. :) I am wondering why you prefer Canon over other camera brands such as Nikon? Just curious!
Great video! I was wondering what lens was used in this shoot. Kinda looks like a 50mm or 35mm prime.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I am an absolute newbie struggling with F-stops, Shutter Speed and ISO and portraits. I have a question and I know it could be a very silly question, but I hope its addressed. Ideally how far should I stand away from the subject to get a blurred background or small depth of field?
The closer you are, the better. Check Chapters 4 and 6 of Stunning Digital Photography for detailed information.
Tony & Chelsea Northrup Thanks for your prompt reply. Its highly appreciated.
Wow! Awesome tutorial! Love to learn how to photograph kids!
What´s the most common aperture and shutterspeed on a sunny day with a 18/55mm lens on my Nikon D3200? I'm just a beginner haha!
Many thanks!
sorry for my English..
Thanks, Benjamin! There's no one aperture and shutter speed that will work. Chapters 4 and 6 of Stunning Digital Photography will help you always find the right settings, though. Links are in the description.
I dont understand why she is using an nd filter with ISO at 250, why not just increase the shutter speed, and lower iso to 100?
Some Nikons have a lowest native ISO of 200
@@villaofpapyri9613 So just increase the shutter speed.
Tony & Chelsea just came across your videos & subscribed, very informative videos. Tony you are very lucky to have such a great looking model !!! Have you guys heardd anymore about the Canon 7d mk 2 as yet? You guys must make it to Sydney Australia one day!
Could you comment how illumination config have you used in this scene? So much perfect!
I have Nikon D5600. Which lens will be best for taking photos of babies - less than 3 years
Suuuper !!! I love all and every single vid of u guys !
in general a good video, just wanna coment on the shot with those 2 girls where you use the defusor to block the sun... that is kind of not great at all... faces in shadow wile the background are alot brighter? here you atleast need a reflector to get som light in there face or a flash
completely agree! dont understand how basics like that can be overlooked
Kristian Myhre Well, I guess there is no fixed rule to any of these things. You just have to find what works best for you and your client or subject. I personally think it was ok to use the shade and play around with the iso and stuff because the sun can make some skin look pale and stuff like that.
that's why photographers would try to avoid such harsh lighting conditions....exposure bracketing couple of shots and post process them in lightroom will do the trick or even a ND filter...
Cool Shirt Tone, where ya get it mate?
how is she able to put her shutter speed at 1/25 without the picture coming out blurry?? practice??
how do you not get blurry pictures with such a slow shutter speed with no flash?
I'm just doing photographs as a hobby and most of the time i am just taking pictures of my kids. But i do not understand, why cranking up the iso is concidered as such a bad practice. Cameras that are 2 or 3 years old do not produce such high noise that it is worth having blurry photos. Especially those expensive cameras that are used in the photoshoot. Maybe someone can help me out with that!?
The biggest obstacle I've seen, are the parents themselves. They get so worked up and stressed, and that carries over to the kids
Thanks :).
Good !! but what lens does she is using in this tutorial, She should have mentioned it.
At one point she mentioned she was using a 50mm, I think.
She did its 50mm
This has helped me so much thank you!
Thank you for this wonderful video...I found it to be helpful!
grate points and very helpful - thanks guys
Is it always recommended to use a hood for the lens?
outdoors always prevents unwanted glare
you should use it, unless you deliberately want lens flare as an artistic feature (which can actually look pretty nice), or you want to use a polariser, which you can't turn with a hood on afaik.
+Florian Fabian thanks. I'll be Investing on one. 🤗
I loved this video! :) may I ask what lens you are using?
*takes off bracelet* xD great tutorial! Thanks!
awesome tips
不错,很好的视频。对我这样的初学者很有用。谢谢老师
Your videos are great!
My four (soon to be five)year-old cousin's birthday is coming up and looking for tips to help shoot him when we go over to see him. He's generally a bit of a poser but can't hold it for more than a second! This definitely helped teach me how to keep him occupied and natural. Thanks!
It's a ND filter. Natural density filter.
Hey guys I'm looking for the best camera for youtube and for less cheaper
Why use an ND filter instead of a fast shutter speed?
I liked what I saw. Nice photograph
very nice video, and gives the good info
where do you get the light sticks from?
thank u for this video ,plz say about white balance
Great information!!
really nice
Why did it end so suddenly?
Cool
What nikon camera is she using fx or dx?
wow great ! good work
Watching in 2019, I forgot that your daughter used to be a little kid lmao that's how children work
Amazing
What lens Sam is using throughout the shoot?
+Ferdinand Divinagracia She said she was using a 50mm. I'm guessing the Nikon 1.4.
Does Chelsea have a channel?
Yeah, this one
