It’s a beast to carry....especially in the field....worse in the desert. Not the sharpest broadhead in the quiver, but if you need a long one, this is great. I use a removable handgrip on the tripod mount for handhold; sometimes a monopod or tripod, especially if shooting multiple shots of the same, limited area (bird nest, roosting, animal lying/standing still, etc). Very long when I switch my D750 from FX to DX with the 1.52 cropping factor. I connect a neck/shoulder strap to the tripod mount rather than carrying by the camera body neckstrap; that’s a lot of weight on the camera mount....especially when walking over rough terrain. For birding (my wife’s the birder....I’m the nugwork part), it’s very adept without the horrific pricetag of Nikon lenses. The zoom lock is firm and best to use. VR is fine. Auto focus: hardly ever use for birds and such: manual focus helps isolate the bird in trees/bushes; can’t really track a bird in flight with this Field of View, anyhow. Sigma really improved over time. No regrets buying this. Tchuss!
For some reason no one ever comments on the actual size of the actual lens...I believe it's 86mm...I wondered if its worth getting a circular polarizing filter when the Fstops are already in such a narrow range....?
All of the vids I’ve seen the zoom all looks different. For example some times the 500mm looks like it zooms very far and sometimes it doesn’t. Any reasons why?😊
This video didn't show you what the OS switch functions (1 or 2) are for or that you have to turn off your camera stabilization function if you want to use the OS function on the lens. This video didn't really cover how to use this lens effectively at all.

Mine has creeped since it was new. The lock switch also disengages frequently and easily with little contact.
Mine used to do that, I don't have the lens anymore as no longer shooting Canon but it was a good lens.
