  • Amarie Baker and her mother, Joyce, look into their family history to discover that one of their ancestors actually registered to vote during the Reconstruction Era in 1867 (prior to voter suppression laws later passed by U.S. states). Amarie later surprises her mother with a special Q&A with Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. for a deeper dive in history.

@@AncestryUS Morning...yes, I have been in the genealogy business since 1982. I've seen our hobby/business change over the many years. When I started, records (other than federal records) weren't openly/readily available to People of Color. You had to know, up front, what records you were seeking...you had to ask for these records. I know that I shocked a many archivists/clerks/librarians by asking for these records. SMILE. This resulted in them pulling these records out of molded boxes in old, dirty basements/rooms...set to never have light on them. SMILE. A long time ago! 🤓

I’m the historian and researcher in my family and I’ve uncovered a lot in a two year period on my father’s side but my moms side is still somewhat of a mystery because of racial divides. It would be so appreciated by myself and my siblings, and all of my family if we could finally unlock this somewhat hidden information. Hey there Precious. Thanks so much for dropping by. We're sorry to hear of your loss and we always want to help as much as we can. A good first place to start when getting started in your research is speaking with other family members right off the bat. Our corporate genealogist, Crista, actually uploaded a great video to our channel when it comes to the subject of interviewing family members that we'll link here for you: th-cam.com/video/9m-e_kJ0k-M/w-d-xo.html
We can also recommend the following quick tips and tricks for starting your tree, like adding as much information as you can about your parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and sharing your tree with them so you can see what stories and photos they'll be able to add: th-cam.com/video/0NBEd_H-hzI/w-d-xo.html
We hope these can help you get started, and we wish you every success in your research.

I wish he would my cousin Marie and I find out what side of the family she belongs to. She was found in a car trunk as a newborn Since we connected on ancestry she has been so good to me. I would love to give back her identity. I am poor but I can still wish and dream. I know it's never going to happen

It’s Filipino Heritage Month….for years I’ve been trying to find records for my mom and her true birth although because of WWII and the fact that her mom died at the age of five she knows no true facts…I wish you could help…it would probably help my mom put closure in her life while she still has most of her memory…

Thank you so much for reaching out to us, Shirley. We understand that researching your family history can include some difficulty. We're actually casting for a TV show at the moment that you might be interested in. We'll link some more information below about how you can apply, if you like. This could be a good option for our members new to family history research or who may be stuck at a brick wall when piecing together the puzzle of their family history. If you’ve ever heard rumors about a story in your family tree that you'd like to learn more about, or wanted to do a deep dive in to the life of one of your ancestors in particular, like your maternal grandmother, then please don't hesitate to apply. We wish you all the best, and hope you have a great day, too!

Hi there Carolyn, thanks so much for stopping by to watch this video. We would be happy to pass on some information about looking into your roots through Ancestry. For anyone looking to find biological family members we always suggest starting with an AncestryDNA test. Once you have your results we would suggest figuring out how you're related to your closest DNA matches in so far as that is possible. We will include a guide with some tips to help with this: support.ancestry.ca/s/article/Uncovering-DNA-Match-Relationships
We have also linked this guide which has our best overall tips for anyone searching for biological family: support.ancestry.ca/s/article/Finding-Biological-Family
Hopefully you'll be able to make some progress from there. Good luck!

I don't understand the people who say, "why don't they do ordinary people?" Unless the person is Hollywood royalty or something, their parents and other ancestors ARE ordinary people.
When the history they're presenting connects to Civil War soldiers, or Pennsylvania Quakers, or people who went to the gold and silver rushes, I hear things that could apply to my ancestors. A cousin of my great grandfather died in Andersonville. He probably knew the young man well, before he left the Midwest farmland they called home. I don't remember which celebrity was connected to Andersonville; I remember the Civil War photos and the visit to the historical site.
