LYRICS:
Didn't I see you down in San Antone on a hot and dusty night
We were eating eggs in Sammy's when the black man drew his knife
Then you drowned that Jew in Rampton as he washed his sleeveless shirt
You know that Spanish-speaking gentlemen, the one we all call Kurt
I remember you in Hemlock Road in 1956
You were a faggy little leather boy with a smaller piece of stick
You were a lashing, smashing hunk of man, your sweat shines sweet and strong
Your organ's working perfectly but there's a part that's not screwed on
Were you at the coke convention back in 1965
You're the misbred grey executive I've seen heavily advertised
You're the great gray man whose daughter licks policemen's buttons clean
You're the man who squats behind the man who works the soft machine
Come now, gentleman, there must be some mistake
How forgetful I'm becoming now you fixed your buisness straight
When the old men do the fighting and the young men all look on
And the young girls eat their mothers meat from tubes of plasticon
Be wary of these, my gentle friends, of all the skin you breed
They have that tasty habit, they eat the hands that bleed
So remember who you say you are but keep your noses clean
Boys will be boys who play with toys so be strong with your beast
Oh, Rosie dear, don't you think it's queer so stop me if you please
The baby is dead, my lady said, you gentlemen, why, you all work for me!!!!!!!!
Best version for me is the movie version with Ry Cooder without a doubt.
One of my favorite songs from the Stones 🤗
Incredible and unique vocal from Mick.
Mr Sleeze.
His vocals and persona were the best from 68 to 74.
......?........( D+ )
1970 what a year that was! That is what I remember of it.
To clarify any questions as to who plays on this and where it's from, here is the information provided by Wikipedia that addresses all three versions-this one apparently the first among those mentioned.
From Wikipedia:
"Three different versions of "Memo from Turner" have been released, and another "Alternative Take" version is available on bootleg recordings.
The first version (again, the one I believe heard here), not officially released, is a slow, brooding version recorded by members of the band Traffic. It features Steve Winwood on all instruments except drums, which are played by Jim Capaldi. The second version, released on Metamorphosis in 1975 on the Allen Klein Decca/London pre-existing legacy contracts of the Stones 1960s recordings, was a different version recorded by The Rolling Stones in November 1968, and has a looser feel than the released version. This version supposedly features Al Kooper on guitar, and perhaps Keith Richards as well. Either Charlie Watts or Capaldi plays drums on this recording. Credited to "Jagger/Richards", it is not clear how many of the Rolling Stones besides Jagger actually played on it.
The third version of the song, typified by its slide guitar, was the one recorded for the soundtrack to the movie Performance, starring Mick Jagger as the song title's "Turner". It is featured prominently in the movie, with Mick Jagger, as Turner, lip-synching it. This is the more well-known version of the song, as it was released as a solo single by Jagger in England in 1970 and is featured on the later Singles Collection: The London Years. This track was recorded in Los Angeles in early 1970, and uses the vocal track of the first, slow version. The tape of Jagger's vocals was sent to Jack Nitzsche, where all music parts were recorded by Ry Cooder on slide guitar, Russ Titelman (guitar), Randy Newman (piano), Jerry Scheff (bass) and Gene Parsons (drums)".
This is neither the Mick Jagger solo single with Ry Cooder nor the Metamorphosis version. This is the first version with Winwood and Capaldi. The vocal track was reused on the Jagger solo single.
@@sd31263 - Thanks for calling that to my attention. It's what I intended to say however erred per which version I credited to. I've since amended it .
Version on the Performance soundtrack is still the best to me - I just wish they'd remaster it.
Performance was a great film.
Awesome flow on this tune.
Badass song they ever did. Would offend everyone if they ever listened to real music. #performance
No "Rolling Stones" here, it's Mick with Traffic backing him.
My god I listened to this in the 80's and now realise this WAS the beat of all beats to precede baggy and the stone roses happy Monday's
I listened to it in 1970
@ wow, replied to a 9 year old post. I honestly don’t even remember writing this! I was born in 1968 so I didn’t have the fortune to be a teen when the Stones were in their prime. I still love them though, and this is a very influential track. Hope you’re doing well and keep on rocking.
@@marcfischetti5490 O, I’m sorry, didn’t notice that. Keep on rocking!
@ ha! No problem at least we’re still around. Here’s to another 9 years!
a good PERFORMANCE
This vocal ----
Whoa! an' hoowhee, Jim!..a grit dirt tarnished 'Turner'..day-yam..a bent anthem to all ya' (cough).. youn' mens tha' work tha' work tha' soft machine over ther'...hehehe..
Pucka version love it. Thanks for upload.
Awesome :))))
Was I dreaming or didn't I see a video of this song with Jesse Ed Davis in it? Mick and Lennon had a little chat for the video's intro.
This is oozing with groove!
sounds like somebody just mix mashed this, yes I can feel the winwood sound on piano
ry cooder on third version (official soundtrack track)
First version: Jim Capaldi - Drums ; All others Instruments: Steve Winwood
Wait. Are you saying this is a Traffic cover???
@@jevicci No.
I said that version (exist 3 versions) was recorded WITH members of the band Traffic. It has Steve Winwood on all instruments, except drums, which is played by Jim Capaldi.
Oh wow! Is THIS the version with Winwood/Capaldi?
@@jevicci Yes, it is.
@Kurt Max? The version in this video is the Winwood/Capaldi recording, from August 1968. This is NOT the Mick Jagger solo single featuring Ry Cooder, which can be found on the "London Years" collection. This unofficial release is on a bootleg Decca CD called "Let It Bleed - Mono Edition." I bought it 20 years ago. www.discogs.com/The-Rolling-Stones-Let-It-Bleed/release/4278919
This is the Traffic version, with Steve Winwood playing guitar and piano and Jim Capaldi on drums. It sounds nothing like the Stones.
Rosie dear
😃
Sounds like CSI 1968 version
Who was that Spanish speaking gentleman Kurt?
Some nice drug taking on this by Brian Jones. Well done there Brian !!
So this is Al Kooper?
Weird....you can hear Jimi Hendrix...vocal timing...?
so u say......🤣🤣🤣🤣
So where can we get this version? Is it released anywhere?
Lyrical phrasing sounds slightly Dylan-esque to me.
ry Coder you mean...
No, he meant the words and their phrasing sound influenced by Bob Dylan. Ry Cooder isn't known for lyrics.
No, I can't hear that myself.
I hear the Dylanesque phrasing from Mick.
why is this called (Keith affair)? Is this his version....or just Keith playing instead of Ry Cooder
+33Pictures I thought it has more to do with record label hassles... was from London to their own label. sounds like a beggars banquet tune.. remember metamorphosis "yikes"
I'm not hearing Ry in this version? What's up with that?
Plz read description bellow.
So who is playing guitar on this version? Also, I am sure all the real fans know what the BB sessions were but I don't
BB = Beggars Banquet, arguably the first great Stones album of their peak. It came out in 1968
@@monitormagazine Was 'Keef affair;' a bootleg?
you can tell who the heads of the stones games are that try to figure this out...do remember who say you are and keep your trousers clean
Why doesn't Mick write these kinds of songs anymore? It's what he did best. Now he keeps trying to write simple stuff, chasing a hit instead of being himself. That's what it seems like to me.
He got obsessed with pop and got lost.
@@arthurbishop3173 He did. Things would be perfect if he kept singing like Muddy Waters and slurred all the time. He should do another Bob Dylan type song as they described Sympathy.
@@mysteryjesus Agreed.
Wholly agree. New album is just Jonas Brothers wannabe. Well made - yes. Well produced - yes. What I want to expect from the Stones -fakk no…
@@theoriginalchefboyoboy6025 I actually really enjoy the album. Some songs took a few listens to click but some of them I loved instantly like Live By The Sword.
Does anybody know that if there's any CDs or analogs of this version out or not ?
Would be better if the lyrics were accurate.
